Shouldn't most of this conversation be going on in the Spin Room?

Were they wanting to jail them they would have taken them away. They may still do that after the teams leave.

Damn! I was hoping for a sale on Big Baller shoes. I hear international lawyers are expensive.

Were they apprehended with merchandise outside of the store (i.e. caught red-handed)? Are any of the players claiming innocence? I.e. is there any possibility it's a set-up, designed to embarrass the US while Trump is touring Asia?

These athletes could be pawns or could be guilty. Hard to tell.

If they did shoplift, they're incredibly stupid.

I completely agree.

It's not just the players but it happens very often where Americans think they have a God given right to do whatever they want outside the United States because "I'm an American and I have rights" like if you ge automatic immunity just for being an American. I've seen that before and I just can't help to shake my head in disbelief how ignorant some of our countrymen are regardless of age, race, political beliefs and income. Common sense would tell you, you don't do anything overseas that you wouldn't do here in the States, especially in countries with strong and severe justice systems as in the players case, China.

RE: LiAngelo Ball, 2 other UCLA players arrested in China for shoplifting
Quote:Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball shared a conversation Saturday that he had with his father, LaVar Ball, regarding the arrest of his brother LiAngelo Ball in China.

According to ESPN.com's Ohm Youngmisuk, Lonzo said LaVar told him to focus on the Lakers and to not worry about LiAngelo.

"My dad did call me but didn't give me much information," Lonzo said. "He just said be ready to play. We are handling it out here, so that is a good sign ... they are out there, so they are taking care of him."

LiAngelo and UCLA Bruins teammates Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were arrested in China on Tuesday for allegedly stealing sunglasses.

LiAngelo, Riley and Hill are under house arrest at a hotel in China while the legal process plays out.

ESPN.com's Arash Markazi reported Saturday that they will not fly back to Los Angeles with the team and could be forced to stay in China for "a week or two."

Quote:Making matters potentially worse for the three arrested Bruins are new details that more stores could be involved in a potential shoplifting spree. According to Markazi’s report, there could be surveillance footage of the UCLA trio shoplifting from two more stores besides the Louis Vuitton store in the high-end shopping center that includes Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Salvatore Ferragamo stores.

If these new details prove to be true, then this looks even worse for the arrested trio as the one shoplifting incident wouldn’t be an isolated thing.

RE: LiAngelo Ball, 2 other UCLA players arrested in China for shoplifting
They should be expelled. Getting caught shop lifting in the US almost certainly cost you your scholarship in the US, and might get you expelled from most campuses.A suspension is far too light IMO. It's pretending there was some injustice done in China; we all know that is bull crap.

Here we are just a few weeks after the payola scandal broke from the FBI, and all these commentators said now was the time for NCAA Basketball to clean up it's act, to stop coddling players. And now there is this, where we pretend felonious acts are just a minor thing, because they happened somewhere else. Just sweep it under the rug. (The Pac-12 looks as dirty if not dirtier than other conferences with literally half the schools under a cloud). Disgusting hypocrisy.

2 parameters:

What would happen to any other student caught shoplifting? Probably not much. They would continue their enrollment and studies if they could pay tuition.
What are the terms on the scholarships for felonies, misdemeanors or embarrassing the university? Got me on that one. But accepting a scholarship puts you on separate terms for potential loss of scholarship.

I tend to agree, however I cut your thoughts regarding college athletics because there is much more money in Chinese students coming to UCLA to study in one year than college athletics can generate in 15 years.

In data released on Monday, UCLA is the #7 US college/university in international enrollment. China, India, and South Korea are their three biggest enrollment pools

https://www.iie.org/Research-and-Insight...stitutions

UCLA has to keep the pipeline flowing.

Right. Non-athlete students busted for shoplifting would not be expelled from the university. And if we are still going to pretend that college athletes are just regular ol' students, then the university has to treat them the same way as non-athlete students.

The team has the right to discipline them or even kick them off of the team for not following team rules or not being a good representative of the program or whatever, but the university administration absolutely should not punish them more harshly than what would happen to a non-athlete student.

If there wasn't a Ball involved, the punishment would be harsher, but UCLA isn't going to cut off that pipeline.

I don't see how kicking the players off the team and pulling their scholarships hurts the China pipeline. The sons and daughters of the Oligarchs and Communist party officials will continue to come to US colleges regardless, especially on the Pacific coast, where there are large Chinese American populations, and thus stores and goods that cater to Asian tastes. Basketball has almost zero impact.

True, shoplifting might not get you expelled, but it could cost you scholarship as a non-athlete. So do the same here.

What do you think the University would do to a non-athlete on a PAID University trip, representing the University if that non-athlete did the same?

Meh. Gelo will enter the draft (even though he is not as good as Lonzo). Youngest may never be eligible, and again, nothing special as a player.
