Does Rice still have 1 open scholarship this year, or was it given to a walk-on? Does anyone know whether AJ Lapray was granted a 6th year of eligibility, or whether he was denied, or whether it is still pending? Bishop Mency and Dylan Jones are both completing their eligibility.

As I posted above...

That should be it for the recruiting for the upcoming class. It also probably means that Lapray and Jones are likely graduate seniors (there was some talk that one or both of them might have 2 years of eligibility remaining).

I count 12 scholarship players on the current team (or possibly 13 if one of the walk-ons has been put on scholarship for this year). Jones, Lapray and Mency are all seniors so that's either 3 or 4 open scholarships (but if a walk-on is on scholarship this year, he's probably not on scholarship next year).

Of course attrition can always create more open scholarships later. We know all too much about that.

Mallorca-Brown looks like a diamond in the rough. If he builds up strength, which seems likely, he will be tough on both ends of the court. He will also need to develop a shot away from the rim.

If he can defend and rebound like Kazemi I will be less concerned if he like Kazemi fails to develop an outside shot.

One of Kazemi's friends and former teammates told me that Kazemi had a fine mix-range jumper, the staff just told him not to shoot it.

Unless he showed signs of using it after his transfer, which I don't think happened, I'd be skeptical about whether his jumper was really so fine.

Isn't that a bad sign when only small 1AA schools want him?

I could be wrong of course. But considering he's recently been followed by everybody on the staff and our other 2018 recruits, I'd say there's a decent chance. He also visited this past weekend.

Good call. Looks like he committed today.

Looking through his junior year games when he was 6'7" 210 (appears he's grown 2-3" this year). Lots of rebounds and some blocks. Not a huge scoring presence but I don't really mind that for the style I think we will be playing. I'll try to watch some recruiting film later and I saw our beat writer already tried to contact him.

He said he chose us over Bucknell, Princeton, and Columbia. Not bad schools beat for a high academic kid.

I know we're done with our 2018 class, but wanted to note that 2018 G Ajare Sanni committed to Pacific. Really good local guard.

An unofficial visit from 2020 PG Isaiah LeBlanc today, based on the tweet below. He's from the Kinkaid School in Houston. Based on his 247 offer list, it seems like we might be priced out rather quickly. Still only a sophomore in HS with offers from Georgia Tech and Houston, and interest from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas. But he's a local kid, so I guess there's always a chance.

His father(?) Jarvis was a contributor to some of the late 90's teams. A transfer from Arizona as I recall.

I don't remember this being posted, but Alec Spence, a 2017 signee who was released from his NLI this past summer, reclassified as a 2018 player and is playing at the Vermont Academy (prep school). I have no idea if he and Rice have any mutual interest.

RE: 2017-2018 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Did a quick search on our commits to see if there is anything interesting or recent about them that hasn't been posted.

Payton Moore - currently ranked #207 nationally in 247sports' composite rankings. Offers from USC, Nevada, and Boise St. Coach Linebaugh visited him in mid-September.
Chris Mullins - currently ranked #245 nationally in 247sports' composite rankings. 5A state title game MVP, District 10-5A Defensive MVP, TABC all state and all region, and Star-Telegram super team. Had interest from Arizona and Kansas last fall.
Trey Murphy III - took his official visit to Rice the weekend of 10/7. Shot 43% on 3's as a junior and is regarded as one of the better shooters in NC.
Quentin Millora-Brown - described by NOVA hoops as "extremely coordinated for his size and seems equally comfortable moving around the perimeter as he does in the block.

The early signing period is November 8-15.

Signed Millora-Brown.

Quote:Rice men’s basketball coach Scott Pera has announced the signing of Quentin Millora-Brown (Lorton, Va.) to a national letter of intent for the 2018-19 school year, Pera announced Wednesday morning.

Millora-Brown, a 6-10 forward, led Bishop O’Connell to a 20-10 record last year and a 12-6 mark in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC). He averaged 5.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. Millora-Brown was twice honored as a WCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention.

“I am thrilled to announce the signing of Quentin Millora-Brown,” said Pera. “Quentin brings many attributes to our program and university. He is a very active front court player that possess a variety of skills. He is an active defender and tremendous finisher around the basket. Quentin is also a standout student and will be a great fit for what we look for in a student-athlete at Rice. He is a great person and teammate and we are very excited about having him be a part of the program for the next four years.”

As a member of the New World AAU squad, Millora-Brown averaged 12 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and two assists to help the team to the Adidas Gauntlet Finale 16-under championship.

Millora-Brown has also earned numerous academic honors. He earned the AP Scholar Award and is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society and Tri M Music Honor Society.

Signed Trey Murphy.
Quote:Rice men’s basketball coach Scott Pera has announced the signing of Trey Murphy (Cary, N.C.) to a national letter of intent for the 2018-19 school year, Pera announced Wednesday morning.

Murphy, a 6-4 guard, averaged 22.3 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 2.8 APG while connecting on 54% from the floor, 47% from three and 93% from the free throw line. His performance earned him Triangle Independent School Athletic Conference (TISAC) All-Conference. For his high school career, Murphy averaged 22 points while shooting 53% from the floor, 45% from three and 93% from the charity stripe. He is also the school leader in field goals made, three-pointers made and free throws made.

“This morning I am announcing the signing of Trey Murphy,” said Pera. “Trey is a high character young man that will be a great addition to the Rice community both on and off the floor. As a player, Trey is an elite shooter. He has really improved his overall game as well and will look to put up a lot of points during his career at Rice. Trey is a true gym rat that loves to work on his game. He is a tremendous student as well and fits exactly what we are looking for in a student-athlete as we continue to build our program.”

Signed Payton Moore.
Quote:Rice men’s basketball coach Scott Pera has announced the signing of Payton Moore (Los Angeles, Calif.) to a national letter of intent for the 2018-19 school year, Pera announced Wednesday morning.

“This morning I am announcing the signing of third member of the class of 2022,” said Pera. “Payton Moore is someone I have been recruiting and gotten to know for almost two years. He is a natural leader that is always working on improving himself as a player and as a person. He is an explosive athlete that loves to attack the basket and play in the open floor. Payton is a tenacious defender and will bring a degree of toughness to our program. Off the court, he is a great student, is active in his community and is everything we are looking for in a student-athlete.”

Moore, a 6-4 guard, helped Santa Monica high school to a 20-8 record and a perfect 10-0 mark in conference play. Last year, he averaged 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. He was named First Team All-Ocean League and Second Team All-Gold Coast League. While at Winward School, he helped the squad to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division 5 Southern Section Championship.

Signed Chris Mullins.
Quote:Rice men’s basketball coach Scott Pera has announced the signing of Chris Mullins (Grand Prairie, Texas) to a national letter of intent for the 2018-19 school year, Pera announced Wednesday morning.

Mullins, a 6-3 guard, led Mansfield Timberview to a 32-7 record last year and the Class 5A state championship, where he scored 36 points and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Mullins averaged 18.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 assists while earning District 10-5A Defensive MVP. He was named First Team All-District and Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All-Region and All-State, as well as Second Team Star-Telegram Super Team.

“The final signee of this morning is Chris Mullins,” said Pera. “I think one word sums Chris up; “winner.” He was the MVP of the Texas state 5A state title championship game last year and led his team to the State title. He is a stat sheet stuffer that looks to do whatever is necessary that night to help his team win. Chris is also a very good defender that never shies away from a challenge. He is a terrific student and high character young man as well. He is exactly what we are looking for in a student-athlete at Rice.”

Mullins is a three time First Team All-District selection and a two-time 5A Defensive Player of the Year and TABC All-Region All-State. As a freshman, he was named the TABC Newcomer of the Year. He is rated a three-star prospect by both ESPN and Rivals.

Hell of a class. This year will certainly be a rebuilding year, but with some of these guys (plus Parrish) for next year, that rebuild may be pretty short!

RE: 2017-2018 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Scholarship breakdown by years of eligibility remaining following 2017-18. Rice currently has 1 open scholarship (which is why we have 3 guys exhausting eligibility that are being replaced by 4 new guys):
Graduating (3): Mency, Jones, Lapray
One year (1) : Cashaw
Two years (4): Adams, Harrison, Martin, Meyer
Three years (4): Parrish, Osborne, Lester, Hunter
Four years (4): Mullins, Moore, Murphy, Millora-Brown

This means that barring a transfer or unusual injury situation, Rice is only looking for 1 player in the 2019 class.
