Regardless of how each player looks game in and game out....as a team this season/cusa tournament goes through MTSU. It is that simple. Each player will have ups and downs. The team will have ups and downs. We must beat MTSU. If we do that....we can make the NCAA's.

I have seen zero commentary on Caver or BJ. How did they do?

Looked same as last year. BJ will play more forward and is a good rebounder.

I really like the lineup, when JJ took Brandan or Porter out and moved BJ to the 4 spot. With four guards, you got a lot ball handlers and shooters. BJ was very strong on the glass.

I think there's less pressure on BJ to shoot this year, which will be really good for him. He was a tough rebounder as usual.

Caver is lights out as always. If anything, I think he was holding back. He can school any of the CNU guys easily. He is our best player.

Caver could have had 40 if he wanted. He was definitely holding back.

Caver hasn't found his touch yet. He missed some chippies right around the basket. He made some nice moves to get to the basket though.

13 of 26 from behind the arc. I'll take 50% all day long. 16 of 32 (50%) from the charity stripe, needs to improve. Funny same percentage from the line and 3 pointers. Makes you wonder how that even happens.

Green had a great line. His FT shot looks to be one of the better on the team. He's a player who will be getting to the line.

RE: ODU mbb v. CNU (exhibition)
Caver had 9 assist and 0 turnovers. He looks very much in control. Pinckney looks ok but I fear a big drop off when Caver is not on the floor. The pace will slow when he is not in the game. As others posted above, Green looks very smooth. His game looks like it could be similar to what we had with Talley but with a better shooting stroke. Someone mentioned in another post that Porters foul shot looked different. It looked the same to me as he always had that high arc. I think foul shooting will improve. Brandon looks a lot more comfortable at the line and his results should improve this year. Neither BJ nor Haynes went to the line much and they should be solid there for us as well. Caver should be better this year too as the season goes. CNU was definitely undersized but so we dominated on the boards as one would expected. Our defense still looks very impressive. I don't see any drop off losing Baker and Taylor. Taylor was tenacious but I believe if we can keep Brandon and Porter on the floor for large stretches we will be improved overall in the front court. Carver didn't play much but you can tell he has worked hard on his game. His shot looks smooth and he has bulked up some.

I'm pretty sure Caver will be averaging at least 35 minutes per game again. Don't think we need to worry too much about what it looks like when he's not in.

Something I just realized, I don't remember seeing any zone defense.

They ran zone at the open practice. So, they are working on it.

I would expect that he will miss some time this season due to illness, injury, etc. These things seem to happen every season to some of the starters. Even foul trouble could take him out of the game for long periods of time. Caver's minutes were limited last season in a key game at UTEP due to an illness (for example). He was out of action for several weeks earlier this year due to a hand injury. Things happen.

Same holds true for other key members of the team playing inside - Porter & Brandan. The lack of adequate depth at those three key positions is likely to be a problem at some point before the season is over. Hopefully it doesn't cost them any games when/if it does occur.

It could be that they didn't want to show it yet and wanted to have it as a surprise against Towson.

RE: ODU mbb v. CNU (exhibition)
I was pleased about the shooting of Hewitt Jr. He brings an element to the team that it has missed for too long - a strong 3 point threat. He hit 3 of them and scored 9 points in just 9 minutes yesterday. I hope he can find more playing time and be as effective during the season. It would be a tremendous help.

I also like the outside shooting that both Haynes and Green displayed. Add in Caver and B. J. and ODU has the strong makings of a team that can shoot (finally).

RE: ODU mbb v. CNU (exhibition)
My observations:

I won't discuss what I expect from the team at this point, its just too hard to tell based on a game against CCNU. But, we did what we were supposed to, so that is good.

Caver - Super solid. He will be as good as expected and is more than capable of leading the team. Looked very confident and in control. Don't know why it takes half a season for him to find his freethrow stoke every year, but we really need him to get that worked out earlier this year.

BJ - Looked about the same, but I don't think he was asserting himself as much as he might in a real game. He looks like he is in better shape this year.

Haynes - Great showing. I was really impressed. He looks so confident, and that has always been the key for him. If JJ continues to give him the freedom to take shots, I think he could be the most improved player in CUSA.

Porter - I think he looked the same, but it is really hard to tell since he was playing against guys who could not compete with a guy his size. I was happy to see that he was able to play in some long stretches and bringing a ton of energy.

Brandan - About the same with one big improvement. He looks to be in much better shape. Hopefully that will solve two problems I think he had last year. He went AWOL for long stretches of games, and had a tendency to foul a lot at times.

Xavier Green - Looked good. Very smooth. Will step right in for Talley and probably be better from the start. (I wasn't a huge Talley fan). Solid contributor this year, and potential for big things in the future.

Godwin - Role player. Did not show much yesterday, but does have good size and the ability to get hot from 3.

Carver - Same dude, but a little more comfortable.

Hueitt - As exciting as advertised, but looks like JJ not going to play him much.

The rest did make an impression one way or the other.
