Do you enjoy being part of a conference rated in the 20s? Because if teams don't improve, that's what we get.

Them improving without cheating would be ok.

I will also admit that I don't fully understand the process for admitting an athlete. As a normal student, whether or not I was academically eligible seemed pretty cut and dry. I had the grades or I didn't. What exactly are they waiting on for that player?

My understanding is the NCAA sets a minimum eligibility requirement for all schools, from Harvard on down. Some schools choose to be more stringent than others beyond that requirement, but they don't have to. Coaches also have to consider how a player may affect the overall team GPA, and whether or not they can actually stay eligible too. Not every school offers sham classes to keep athletes eligible and grades higher like UNC does.

I appreciate your response. seems like the type of thing that ought to be squared away well before the season is about to tip off

We went through a similar process with Odell Hodge. Had to male sure he was eligible academically. If I recall he had to retake his SAT last minute. But we Did have it all squared away before the season began.

Amatuerism is based off of the actual playing before they get to college. I think it’s way more stringent now (then when I went through the eligibility center), but I want to say they asked questions like:

“Did you get paid?”
“Did anyone on your team get paid”
“What team did you play for? What did you pay to play? What was provided”

As far as the academic side: for me I had to have 16 core classes (most were complete before I got to my senior year) and a GPA and a corresponding test score. I think now certain classes have to be done by a certain year, there is a minimum GPA (higher than the 2.0 that was required when I played.)

So I assume that they have questions about how and when and wheee one of them played AND maybe classes that the other one used to meet the requirements came from a “non eligible” prep school or diploma mill

That's a good explanation. Every year it seems more and student athletes get caught up in the academic vortex. One of the reasons prep-schools are so busy. Question has ODU ever taken a partial qualifier? I thought we had. I know we give Marshall alot of flack about their openness with accepting partial qualified students.

Plus a lot of these basketball players move around to several schools and getting documents and verfying them takes time. Plus they have to make sure actually took the SAT ..cough Derrick Rose.

No, or at least the last 30+ years.

Not sure how anyone outside of athletics would know that. Partial qualifiers (which I think is now an “academic redshirt”) can practice but not play. So pretty much anyone who has redshirted as a freshmen could have been a partial qualifier.

Pretty sure we’ve probably had one or two non/partial qualifiers. Mosley comes to mind

Mosley sat out his first year here (under BT). Wasn’t allowed to practice, play, or sit on the bench.

I am pretty sure that Moseley was an academic redshirt. I thought it was something related to transcripts, but definitely vaguely remember hearing something about it back then.

Edit: Should have read through before commenting.
