It makes me sick to watch our QB in the shotgun formation on 4th and 1. How many times did we do that? At least make the defense think you are going to sneak it.

Especially with our O-Line getting stood up each time. Pathetic.

Bobby blamed SW on one of them. I don't agree. Why not just call the play for him to fake the handoff and run the f$cking ball. Geeeez. I blame the coaches for bad calls. Period.

RE: 4th and 1
If you can't get 1 yard against a pathetic defense like NT, then you shouldn't be on the field. That was just a disgusting display of execution, play calling, and just not gutting it out. Plain and simple, the Mean Green DL just wanted it more than our 300+ slow, ineffective, and tired looking OL. We got beat in the trenches and it doesn't help when the DBs are playing so soft that 6-10 yards is a handout.

The play calling, on both sides of the ball is killing this team. It defies logic.
Example #1. 4th and 1 and we throw a quick out to Melvin Vaughn. We threw the longest pass we could throw to a point 3 yards downfield, to our biggest body receiver, instead of having him position his body on an inside route which would have required a shorter throw.

Example #2. If your strength on defense is the defensive line, this should afford you more tight coverage of the receivers. Instead we play so soft and never attempt to upset their passing routes.

Example #3. The most difficult pass pattern to cover is a crossing route. Yet we never seem to run crossing routes. Nor do we find spots in a zone to sit down and look for the ball. Every pattern seems to require our QB to hit a moving target.

Kudos to the staff on the 2-point conversion though. That was a well designed play.

I never understood why we don't have just 5 plays with the QB under center for those 4th and 1 plays. You give the defense an extra 4 yards to react to a handoff. I just don't get it.

RE: 4th and 1
We arent an under center team either way. But, the shotgun formation allows QB to see what defense is doing and allows for the run/pass option as well as the ability for the QB to hold on to ball and run. The actual handoff point between under center and shotgun isnt a 4 yard difference.

I havent seen studies in college, but in the NFL running in shotgun short down situations is 6% more successful than running under center with significantly higher yards per play.

There are advantages to shotgun snaps on short yardage plays. Even on a QB sneak where the QB can read the blocking (Tebow?).
There are advantages to being under center too. It's a wash. Execution is the key either way.

This. The 4th and 1 plays become so much harder when you have to have the play develop from deep in the backfield and qb sneak isn't even an option.

It doesn't make sense on the surface but that response makes sense. It's also more successful.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

Bobby and Brian Scott are ******* retards when it comes to play calling. Nothing new there. Placing the blame on a 17 yr QB for that geez what a wuss/puss.

When will we quit hearing the 17 yr old excuse. He has played a half season now and has plent of game experience. Next year will it be he is only 18?

On an interesting sidenote I have a friend who was a head coach in the Big East for 10 years and he told me when recruiting receivers only 33% can catch a football in college mostly due to the physical contact. Totally blew me away with that statement as he was specifically referring to Duke but I can see it with our guys as well.

RE: 4th and 1
Think about how surprised a defense would be if our QB lined up under center, with #61 in the backfield. Sneak it and have 61 there to push him forward. Since we have never done that before in a game it is either money or they call a timeout.

The blame on I believe the second 4th and 1 is on BW for calling time out. NT looks a little confused snap it and go, take advantage of that. The timeout gave them pause and based on our past they new what was calling.

Would someone explain to me how our OLine in a two point stand is going to get leverage on the DLine in three point stances for short yardage? The physics does not work for me. Little help guys.

+100. I’ve got a special needs daughter. There are plenty of other words in the English language to use.
