Sweet Georgia Brown. Can you remember a more gratifying win than that?

Between the Children's Harbor jerseys and sore spot that is Tech, it was as if the football gods decided, "Tech, you ain't winning today." If you're a believer of such things, with the cosmic forces swirling around the Old Grey Broad yesterday, Tech had no chance.

A couple of things I'd never seen before happened yesterday.

First, obviously, is we beat Tech. I haven't liked them since Tim Rattay lit us up like a pinball machine.

Second, and this was the amazing thing, and something I can honestly say I didn't think was possible at Legion Field; crowd noise affected the game.

That is not a typo.

We were the 12th man. Us. At Legion Field.

Was Tech affected? Probably not much. Were the Blazers feeding off it? If you don't think so, then we weren't at the same game. My throat is raw, but I can do a serviceable Barry White impression, baby. I have no skin left along my inner wrist from my watch band.

The team was feeding off it, and I was going to make some. I friggin' hate vuvuzelas and cow bells, but Lord.

And that UAB chant at the end was a balm to the soul.

Anywho, on to the observations:

The Good

1. Spencer. Effin'. Brown. If he stays healthy, that man-child is going to be something special. He reminds me of Jordan Howard, except smoother and more patient. Yet, still a bruiser.

2. AJ Erdely. 21/32 for 188 yards. Not Rattay, but clean. He took care of the ball and made a lot of important throws. That draw that got called back was a thing of beauty. Even one turnover might have sunk us yesterday.

3. Andre Wilson. He's rapidly becoming Erdely's go-to. 8 catches for 105 yards, some of them damn tough catches. We were wondering who would step up at wideout. Now maybe we know.

4. Stacy Keely. Man, when that tall drink of water is on the field, good things happen.

The Bad

1. Kicking left 7 points on the field. That said, I believed that if it'd come down to a kick for us, Nick Vogel would have made it. Because Tech wasn't gonna win.

2. I was going to say special teams, generally, but other than that, were pretty good. We covered kicks. Had a couple of nice returns, and well, #theblock.

3. That second down call on our last possession. We picked up 7 on first down, and were poised to step on their throat. I said at the time that if we'd lost, that call would be the point on which the game turned. I'd have told big 28, "Son, you're getting it until we line up in the victory formation or punt."

The Ugly

1. Lucius Stanley going down. Damn. I hope he's back on his feet soon.

2. That unsportsmanlike call against Tech for wagging his finger at us that cost them a point. It's the little things.

So, what does this mean, Barbara?

I'll tell you what this means. It means we ain't sneakin' up on anybody from here on out. Notice has been served. Those who pencilled us in as a gimme in August are reshuffling.

Going into yesterday, I figured we'd be favored against Rice, Charlotte, and UTEP, meaning to be bowl eligible, we'd have to steal one from Tech, MTSU, USM, UTSA, or Florida.

Well, we stole one.

Who knows what will happen next week against Middle? That ball is pointed at the ends and takes some funny bounces, and if there was a team on earth that deserved to have it bounce their way a few times, it's us.

What I do know is, I will be there, and I will be loud.

That's all I got. For now. I think.

I was that guy yesterday. figured team can't hear me individually yelling 30 yds away & 50 rows up, thought I'd bring the horn. Kept it defense related, of course.

You're spot again!

Not a fan of Coach Koennings play calling, that is all.

I hate how much we play in a 3 man front and DBs getting whooped on 10-15 yd passes.

That draw that got called back was a thing of beauty.

As a HS freshman, I went to Dieter Brock's QB camp. Jimmy Carter was president and the music our DJ uses to kill crowd involvement was actually current. They taught us a play called Option Left that looked exactly like the one Erdely ran for that gain. It looked like Clark busted out something from his dad's mimeographed playbook files.

Your prediction from a few years back looks to become reality this year: UAB would be in a bowl game before Garrick McGee would become head coach again.

The 2nd TD run from Erdley looked like a similar play. He faked & cut back left.

You're right- the fans were engaged and fairly loud, and I do think it made a difference.. It was a lot of fun. And no mass exodus in the 4th quarter either. That always ticks me off a little bit, but it didn't happen yesterday.

RE: Smaug's $0.02
I am hoping that when we look back on this season in December, we will see the last minutes of this game as the turning point for the rest of the season. We had a chance to fold as UAB had done so many times in the past 15 to 20 years -- but we didn't. Bitter experiences from so many past collapses were put away and we won. What this team builds from Saturday's game will be known over the next 7 games, and it looks good right now.

We were -1 in games that we were penciled in to win to become bowl eligible. We are even now. Can be +1 after next weekend.

The turning point for me was two weeks ago in the second half in Denton.

The difference yesterday was we closed the deal.

We're sometimes not the most football-savvy crowd (like making noise when WE have the ball, for instance), but yesterday was different. It was a tense, close game, and we were loud when it was time to be loud, and quiet when it wasn't.

Players waving towels helps, but they've always done that.

We were different yesterday. I'll be damned if I know why, but I'll take a big helping, and I bet the team would, too.

A home field advantage. I didn't think it possible at Legion Field, but it was real yesterday. We need to do that every week.

I kept looking around at the home crowd and thinking these are true UAB football fans. It pleased me very much.

Mark my words - we will win two of games against MTSU, USM, UTSA, or Florida because of our team's no-quit attitude.

We finish 8-4.

Only two I could compare too was when Bryan Ellis led us 99 yards against Troy and the first time we beat USM. This crowd was bigger though....

I thought of those two games too. The USM game was on my birthday. Pretty awesome day.

The Marshall game in 2014 had great crowd energy (and around the same # in attendance) but I think this past weekend topped it. The crowd noise when the field goal was blocked was LOUD!

Has anyone else notice the AD was running across the field looking for some to hug after the block? I must say he seemed to be extremely pumped.
