Well your expectations are illogical and the premise is factually inaccurate.
Aside from the Huskie 2017 football preview being presented in the same format as Illinois, Northwestern and Notre Dame, you say the "rest of the past decade."
Here's the link that showed NIU in a very favorable light from the headline on in a preview of our last bowl game in 2015:

Not going to bother finding and providing links to game stories from MAC Championships or other previous bowls. Since this is 2017, the 2012 Orange Bowl certainly falls within the last decade and all Chicago media (print / TV) covered that.
The Tribune does not regularly cover USC, Arizona, Louisville, Auburn or Oklahoma State men's basketball, but it did cover the scandal that just broke and there were stories noting and speculating on the connection to new Illinois coach Brad Underwood who was at Oklahoma State and whose assistant was one of the ones indicted.
Loyola women's basketball doesn't get any more coverage than Huskie football yet the Trib did stories on circumstances surrounding dismissal of coach Cheryl Swoopes, the unrest in the ILL-ness women's hoops program, the many layers of crap surrounding Baylor athletics. In other words, if it makes headlines nationally, the Trib covers it and not because there's a vendetta against NIU. You need to separate loyalty and love for NIU from what the outside world rightly or wrongly believes is newsworthy.
Last but not least, your expectations are out of line with the reality of what is happening economically to newspapers. Regrettably subscriptions, ad revenue, etc. are down and staffs have been trimmed by the executives who still get their bonuses.
Out of curiosity, where are you getting your sports coverage from? The Daily Herald, the Naperville Sun, ESPN.com, the NIU athletics website, The Dog Pound?
