I agree; kudos to Carey, Jones-Davis and Penny.

And much to my surprise the Chicago Sun Times published this story.

https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/nius...eye-gouge/

It was a bad incident and all handled it well. Time to move on.

RE: Antonio suspended!!
Sorry murph83, DiehardHuskie, BDB5yp, Dog Fan, NIU007, but there have been items in the Sun-Times regarding NIU on other occasions commensurate with the fact they have virtually zero staff.
The trick is no one takes note or as so many on here like to brag "they no longer subscribe to a paper or bother reading one and get everything they need on line."
It's easy to take potshots -- there's no ISU grad who could ever run even the Sun-Times -- and try to blame the papers but there's one and only person responsible for this mess. Antonio Jones-Davis.
When an act of such poor sportsmanship goes viral on You Tube and makes, ESPN, Fox Sports, sportscasts across the nation, you're expecting the Chicago media not to mention it? Why? Because the school is nearby?
Thankfully, Carey and Jones-Davis accepted responsibility and apologized.
But for those bringing up the targeting hit by SDSU's player, that's a violation of the rules of football. The Bears Trevathan was suspended two games. Jones-Davis committed a violation of sportsmanship and decency with an act that has nothing to do with playing the game. Yet the SDSU player ejected missed the bulk of that game and will miss the next one. Last season, many on here speculated that certain individuals weren't seeing playing time because they were in Carey's doghouse. Considering all of that, can you honestly say a one-game suspension doesn't seem light.
Seriously, if an opposing team did that to a Turner, Wolfe, Lynch, etc., you guys wouldn't be up in arms?

I'm expecting the media to not cover it if they haven't covered us for the rest of the past decade. I used to get the Tribune but stopped when they only covered NIU when it was convenient - and the Sun-Times is even worse.

Well your expectations are illogical and the premise is factually inaccurate.
Aside from the Huskie 2017 football preview being presented in the same format as Illinois, Northwestern and Notre Dame, you say the "rest of the past decade."
Here's the link that showed NIU in a very favorable light from the headline on in a preview of our last bowl game in 2015:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/col...story.html
Not going to bother finding and providing links to game stories from MAC Championships or other previous bowls. Since this is 2017, the 2012 Orange Bowl certainly falls within the last decade and all Chicago media (print / TV) covered that.
The Tribune does not regularly cover USC, Arizona, Louisville, Auburn or Oklahoma State men's basketball, but it did cover the scandal that just broke and there were stories noting and speculating on the connection to new Illinois coach Brad Underwood who was at Oklahoma State and whose assistant was one of the ones indicted.
Loyola women's basketball doesn't get any more coverage than Huskie football yet the Trib did stories on circumstances surrounding dismissal of coach Cheryl Swoopes, the unrest in the ILL-ness women's hoops program, the many layers of crap surrounding Baylor athletics. In other words, if it makes headlines nationally, the Trib covers it and not because there's a vendetta against NIU. You need to separate loyalty and love for NIU from what the outside world rightly or wrongly believes is newsworthy.
Last but not least, your expectations are out of line with the reality of what is happening economically to newspapers. Regrettably subscriptions, ad revenue, etc. are down and staffs have been trimmed by the executives who still get their bonuses.
Out of curiosity, where are you getting your sports coverage from? The Daily Herald, the Naperville Sun, ESPN.com, the NIU athletics website, The Dog Pound?

RE: Antonio suspended!!
My expectations are reasonable. They might not be what happens, but they are reasonable.

Not saying the Tribune NEVER wrote any articles about NIU. Just that when they did we were usually shunted off to page 28 whereas a couple other schools were inevitably on page one even though they lost and weren't any good. I would then check the Suntimes at the library just out of curiousity and there would be nothing at all, or maybe one small paragraph mixed in with the boys HS cross-country articles. This was at a time when NIU was winning quite a few games, both before and after the Orange Bowl year. The eye-poking incident happened in a football game and is thus a SPORTS STORY. The Suntimes especially should not have even noticed since they didn't notice anything else the football team did.

And I'm not saying there is any vendetta against NIU. They just don't cover us as much as a Division I program 35 miles from the city should be covered, IMO.

NOW, newspapers are pretty much hopeless. They are in a death spiral. I go online to get sports news. This site, or ESPN or CBSsports.com, or similar.

Seeing as Carey said he confessed and owned up, I doubt he claimed it was accidental.
I never said it was accidental. But, I am glad we're moving on.

While I'll grant you we never get coverage commensurate with our success, the point is your loyalty to the Huskies leads you to want hometown style coverage and that bar is too high. NIU's coverage in the Sun-Times was never mixed in with HS cross-country because it's been a decade since the Sun-Times dropped freelancers like me who provided high school coverage. Yes, NIU got second-tier coverage behind B1G's Illinois and Northwestern plus Notre Dame because unfortunately, they went by subscribers and our alums were outnumbered and the perceived interest was greater for those other programs. HOWEVER, college athletic coverage got second-tier attention behind any Chicago pro team. While no newspaper has a 28-page sports section, I understand your characterization that the Huskies were always inside and usually deeper inside the Trib, but NIU really got better than that during the Orange Bowl and briefly after that.
As mentioned last time, just because they're not paying attention to Loyola women's basketball, ILL-ness women's hoops or a football player's injury til he files a lawsuit, once people start talking about a coach's bizarre behavior or a the idea the administration isn't responding to athletes' complaints, people start talking and it gets coverage.
Regrettably, people across the nation were talking about the eye-poke, so the Trib or Sun-Times would appear to be even more oblivious IF they don't mention it. When you say the Sun-Times "should not have even noticed" you're saying they should have ignored it. That won't happen.
The death spiral you refer to is very accurate, but regrettably it's the death spiral to verifiable and in-depth coverage of high school and college sports, period. What people are missing is that online coverage is smoke and mirrors. The majority of that is provided by individuals who are not in attendance themselves and get info second-hand.
You still get what you pay for and that free online coverage means someone getting paid rock-bottom is providing the product. You would not believe how many freelancers from the Chicago area are serving as correspondents to online outlets for schools from Texas to Toledo, from sport to sport.
No disrespect intended, it's the online sports news outlets that blew up the eye-poke even before the outcome of the game was decided. As someone who cares about the Huskies like you do, the instant that happened I cringed knowing what was to come. Unfortunately, shooting the messengers is not going to change things.

Fair enough. I don't have that high of expectations I don't think, just higher than the coverage we've received over the last several years (and if we were ever going to get covered, those would be the years). E.g. when a Chicago sportswriter admitted (after covering a pretty sucky Illinois team quite regularly) that he had NO idea that NIU had been so good and had been winning 10-11 games a year and had beaten teams like Minnesota and Purdue. People on the other side of the country know far more about NIU's recent success than Chicago media, that much is apparent.
