Men's Hoops Thoughts on Upcoming 2017-2018 season
Expectations? Last two seasons have been disappointing considering the talent we had on paper.

First official practice was October 2.

Dear emu79,
I'm hoping we will be better. Statements were made that last years team had some selfish individuals, and that hurt our performance. I don't know. It did seem that there were times when shots were taken (especially threes), and missed with no time taken off the clock. No effort to try and set something up. I am certainly not a basketball guru, so like I have already said, I don't know.

A valid observation Ken on the selfish part. I am hoping the addition of a true point guard in Jackson will improve both the attitude and performance re team vs individual.

I think you are on to something, Ken.

Folks underplay the importance of a good PG. As Dennis Hoopster used to say: (PG) The straw which stirs the drink.

NBA and college basketball are now guard games. It isn't a game where someone dumps the ball to the center and gets out of the way and watches him go one on one...

Lot of folks believe PJ will be a very effective PG running the offense. We have had PGs who weren't really PGs, but by necessity played there.

I'm really looking forward to the season. I think the starting five is going to be top notch and there will be some really solid contributors off the bench. I'm excited to see which Freshmen will step up and make their presence felt.

I'm also excited because I'll be serving as the PA Announcer for the season. So it will be a chance to see the game from a completely different angle and hopefully make some positive contributions to the fan experience.

RE: Men's Hoops Thoughts on Upcoming 2017-2018 season
we've only seen three guys play, so i don't really have expectations for the year. too many unknowns. i think we know what we'll get from Bond & Thompson (particularly now that he'll be back in the middle of the zone). hopefully Nobles has developed over the offseason. he has the potential to be a solid player. everything else is a huge question mark.

im looking forward to the start of the season. hoping to make it back for at least one home game.

RE: Men's Hoops Thoughts on Upcoming 2017-2018 season
Murphy inherited very little talent his first season and finished 7-9.
In Murphy's 3rd thru 5th season, he had top 1/4 talent in the conference and finished somewhere between 7-9 conference wins.

Conclusion: Murphy's system is an enabler to overachieve with lesser talent or underachieve with more talent and win 7-9 conference games.

I predict we win 7-9 conference games.

oh nice! are you going to do "shhhhhhhhhhh-ooting two" before free throws? are you working on your catchphrases? Zach Lowe just did a great interview with Ian Eagle about coming up with catchphrases for play-by-play work. i highly recommend it.

My take: Murphy's first season - two things stand out:

1). The MAC was NOT ready for the Murphy zone. Not much zone played back then outside of Syracuse. It took years to learn how to coach against it.

2). The MAC back then, esp. the West, was VERY weak. This year's team would kick a*s all over that team and the MAC West back then.

Aaron hit the nail on the head that it's hard to have any expectations when we've only seen 3 guys play in EMU uniforms. Just from an observational standpoint (and this could be way off), this team seems to like each other a lot. They interact with each other more on social media than in years past. I also like that Thompson looks to have added some bulk and muscle. If he can add some defensive discipline to that muscle, like using his body instead of his hands, he could be a great interior defender.

I'm most excited about the freshmen. Ty Groce was very well thought of, plus the new PGs had some impressive stats/film. It's nice to have some guys to potentially build a legit future around.

Also, DaShonte Riley. He took the entire middle away by himself. It made the zone look a lot better when we had a guy who was just as good at denying entry passes as he was altering shots.

I still think the zone works just fine, and it isn't nearly as big of a problem as our lack of an offensive gameplan. But we clearly suffered defensively as soon as he left.

Ty Groce could be a big surprise this season among players who have not played college ball. I assume he backs up Bond at SF.

As far as only 3 returnees: Remember that we have what 3 transfer sitouts: Minnie, Jackson and Harris. I have the utmost confidence in the transfer sitouts.

Still wonder about JT4's backup.

Just by looking at the team photo, Bud Jones would be my guess. The guy is pretty big. Jalen King and Elijah Minnie have the length but not necessarily the bulk. It's going to be a lot to ask out of a true freshman. Hopefully Thompson stays out of foul trouble.

Wow, Bond is a small forward and not a point guard?!?!?!?

Sorry, one last friendly jab about that one, Steve...

#OldNews But Bond is a back up PG. Nothing changed.

My guess on the starting five is Bond, Jackson, Minnie, Harris and JT4. Really green at guard.

Yes, that would be my guess as well.

Backups. Bond can back up Jackson at PG (02-13-banana), Nobles backs up Minnie and Groce behind Bond (Bond the SF). McAdoo in the back court.

Still trying to get a feel for front court backups (I haven't switched over from FB to MBB thinking yet).

Don't forget Ellison. Interested in seeing how well he does at PG.

Minnie is very tall and athletic, I could see him playing in the middle and relieving JT4.

Yes. I did forget that. Don't need to weigh 225 - 50 to play backup minutes at center in the MAC.

Nothing wrong with Minnie sitting out by the FT line and popping jumpers.

I know nothing about the new big guys, Jones and King. Don't have sources in S.C or Washington, state.
