RE: Antonio suspended!!
Kid made a bad mistake but he is a kid and shouldn't be condemned forever. A lot of bad things happen at the bottom of those piles and I've seen much nastier. Not condoning it but he will hopefully learn from the embarrassment. If not, then he needs to go.

I like what Carey said, but IMHO the suspension should be a little longer - together with the apology.

Exactly. This is an opportunity for him to grow up. Not destroy his life.

Should have been more than 1 game if it was something not condoned by coaches.

“After seeing the video of the incident that occurred during a kickoff of last night’s game at San Diego State, I have suspended linebacker Antonio Jones-Davis for the upcoming game versus Kent State (Oct. 7).

“Antonio’s action is not indicative of his character, nor that of our players or coaching staff, and does not reflect the values upon which our program has been built.

“Last night’s game was extremely hard-fought, it was emotional and it was a chippy game which at times crossed the line on both sides as evidenced by the number of post-play penalties. However, Antonio’s action in that emotional moment was completely unacceptable, and he understands that he must face the consequences.

“In speaking to Antonio today, he has taken full responsibility for his actions and voiced to me his disappointment in himself that he embarrassed the university and the football program.

“On behalf of our football program, I want to apologize to San Diego State, Coach Long and SDSU player Rashaad Penny. Antonio and I will be reaching out personally to them in the near future.

“I’m confident Antonio, and our entire team, will learn from this incident and be better going forward.”

Antonio also committed this act on NATIONAL TV and the media has jumped all over it. He will forever be known as a dirty player. His reputation is really tarnished. Losing one's reputation is a huge punishment & loss. It is all so stupid - dumb move by a kid.

RE: Antonio suspended!!
I sent Sean Frasier an email earlier today asking that NIU act swiftly to apologize to SDSU and Mr. Penny and discipline Jones Davis. In my email I suggested a two to three game suspension.

One game seems too light and throwing him off the team would have been too heavy handed.

I don't know the young man and the coaches and Sean Frasier do. Perhaps he is a good person that made an incredibly stupid mistake. I do hope that he learns and grows from the experience. I also hope that there are some additional consequences that we might not know about or need to know about.

Right now I am embarrassed and ashamed of the program. We can get through this but it will take time to regain our credibility and respect.

Hopefully he will make amends moving forward. LaGarrett Blount overcame his incident at Boise State and Antonio is only a sophomore so he has the time to redeem himself and his character. I did over react calling for his dismissal but I still feel it should have been a multi game suspension but I hope he realizes the backlash he has brought onto our program.

Best team we have played yet- excluding that DBag- best of luck for your team the remainder of the season!

Thanks, you too! Normally I'd give congrats on your board but the AztecMesa board I tried to sign up for I never got approval to post, though I signed up a couple weeks ago.

In the Butkus days this would have been considered a love tap. I think an even more serious problem is how players are launching at other players heads. Jim McMahon can't drive by himself because he may forget where or who he is. A big mistake by the player but I think some perspective is needed also

Wow reading the thread on their board we're running a criminal organization with thugs. They weren't going to be happy with anything more than suspension for the season or pressing criminal charges.

The play was dirty. He got punished. sorry the next game on our schedule is Kent State. Sorry they suck.
Got news for you Buffalo isn't much better.

I think I'll be rooting for sdsu success but there are a few posters on their board who are total asshats. Looking at you Aztec Panther.

He is lucky that assault charges were not brought. That has happened a number of times in hockey and this incident meets all the requirements for assault. There is no implied consent to have your eyes attacked when helplessly lying on the ground after a play. Assault is not the case in most everything in football because of implied consent by playing the game. He would have stayed the night in San Diego and probably be fined and given some community service. I am glad that was not the case, I think NIU is handling this correctly.

Assault? Really? What's next? The Aztec player that got thrown for targeting. Should that become criminal too. I know it isn't the same thing but it's against the rules, clearly illegal, and dangerous. It was dirty and he's getting suspended so move on. I want to cheer for your team to run the table now but comments like that will make me think twice. Sdsu better win more dominantly from now on because USF is playing some good football and has the upper hand on the access bowl.

It sounds like you didn't read my entire post. I agree that it shouldn't have come to that but he did put himself in legal jeopardy as I stated - it is not part of the game as making blocks that are illegal (football rules) is. I also stated that NIU handled it correctly.

Agree with what you've written including that one game seems too light. If a player failed to execute the responsibilities of his position, there's a chance he'd be benched and not see the field the next game. A lack of sportsmanship like this needed to be more than missing one game.
