Those are very, very serious charges. Statutory max of 20 years on the wire fraud counts. He's going to be spending at least a couple of years in prison, and that's if he fully cooperates with the government and pleads guilty.

Matthew Stevens
This complaint details Auburn assistant coach Chuck Person is being charged for accepting bribes to steer Austin Wiley to Rashan Mitchell.

I doubt they kid knew what was happening behind the scenes. But, this will follow the player whether he knew about it or not. Good kid from a good family. I believe Person is actually his (2nd) cousin...

I bet there are a lot of coaches not mentioned sweating bullets this morning. This type of stuff is very common.

And the NCAA has already meted down punishment.

Arizona Basketball - 3 seed in San Diego

Oklahoma St. - 5 seed in Dallas

Auburn Basketball - NIT bid

USC - NIT bid

Wow so does this mean that Pearl and AU at an administrative/institutional level would have been looked at and already cleared?

Nope. These are federal, criminal charges. While we often use "legal/illegal" to describ NCAA rules, that's a private organization and a completely different set of rules.

As Phil implies, they'll probably punish Auburn with an NCAA bid this year.

The NCAA would have had no idea this investigation was going on. They will, however, likely start an investigation of their own to deal with the programs. And I suspect it will get ugly. This will end Bruce Pearl, and probably Jay Jacobs. I've heard reports that Person was the subject of wire taps, and he made some statements incriminating the program. I.e., using the money to pay recruits.

This is crazy stuff. You know it's going on, but to see it all blown open publicly by the FBI is wild. I'm curious to see how far the collateral damage goes.

I would think the IRS would be interested in all this unreported income as well.

They KILLED a guy at Baylor.

They caught Louisville with hookers & cash.

They caught UNC fixing grades.

They made movies about point shaving at Boston College, and made the gangsters household names.

Sir Charles is on record of saying that he wanted to come play for Gene, but Auburn was paying too much. Ditto Chris Jackson - LSU; Buck Johnson - UAT.

Only God knows the depravity that goes on in Lexington since they've hired the right hand of the devil himself.

These programs are all still allowed to compete in Men's Basketball.

The NCAA is almost as useful as a WWE referee.

Well, that would cause some problems for Pearl & Jacobs.

Yeah. One-year postseason ban and reduction of one scholarship, show-cause order for Person until he's paroled.

As far as collateral damage, expect a lot. Someone made a comment about Person "taking the fall for his coach." If we were talking NCAA infractions, maybe. But we are talking about federal prison time. I suspect Person will start singing like a canary to shave time off his sentence, and the skeletons will start falling out of the closet. To be honest, I think at this point the question is does the new AD keep the Gus Bus...
