James Madison hosting three crucial visitors this weekend for officials including Nick Honor, Taevion Kinsey & Alanzo Frink

Bogey mentioned Honor before- 3 star PG from Florida.

Frink is a 6'8" PF from NJ (Roselle Catholic) (Umass Fordham Stony Brook and others have offered) It looks like he plays on the U17 Dominican national team as well. Nice to see JMU MBB recruiting Jersey Catholic schools again.

I hope Honor was able to make it in and back home considering he's from Orlando and dealing with Hurricane Irma and all. Fingers crossed. We need a solid PG in this class. Hopefully, we can get some good news with a verbal commit or two soon. Early signing period is now just under 8 weeks away (starts Nov. 8, Wed.).

RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Deshon Parker a PG from Dayton Ohio is scheduled for an official visit today. Also has offers from Miami of Ohio and Vermont. FWIW has pinned a tweet about his JMU offer from June.

A PG JMU had recruited but was earmarked for high major Serell Smith from St Petersburg, FL commited to Ole Miss the other day. Smith played with Darius Banks. In addition to Honor JMU has also recruited Jason Wade from Trinity in Virginia who played with Zach Jacobs but he may end up with a high major as well. I'm pretty confident they will get a PG committed during the early signing period.

In addition to Parker, Justin Lee a 6' 7" SF from Georgia and Christian Guess a 6' 6" SF from Cleveland are scheduled to visit JMU this weekend.

According to 247 sports, Dukes are warm with Honor, Frink and Guess -- see link below. I had posted a few weeks ago that one publication had them picked 10th for the coming season. Saw another one over the weekend that had them in the middle of the pack and it indicated that Rowe had upgraded the talent level and that JMU would have among the most new players of any team in the country.

You mean we will possibly no longer be defining the phrase "playing below the rim"????

2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Jmu was in to visit Frink yesterday. I don't think Jmu has recruited in Northern NJ in years. That's a pretty big development IMO. With St Anthony's closing down (Bob Hurley Sr's program) more kids are funneling to the other catholic schools in the area. Roselle Catholic where Frink plays is a perennial power along with The Patrick School, St Joe's of Metuchen and others. There is a lot of talent in a concentrated area and it's Jmu's geographic footprint without a ton of local competition even though Rutgers under a new staff is emerging locally to go with Monmouth and of course Seton Hall. It's a good circle to recruit and one that Lefty recruited effectively in the 90s. With the connections in Florida now in Ohio and in Va to go with Jersey it gives the staff a lot of options.

With all the new faces JMU will probably take their lumps early. If they can stay healthy they should be interesting in the second half of the season and they have many more players who can definitely play above the rim. Cam Smith, the grad transfer has knee issues but is a freaky athlete when healthy. If Develle Phillips can stay healthy and out of foul trouble we will be ok. Phillips is 6'9" and 210 pounds which means he is not going to be a physical presence but he is a really good shot blocker. Dwight Wilson is a full grown man and is going to eventually be a very good CAA player. He is currently a work in progress but will play minutes this year. Darius Banks who is probably the best recruit from the freshman class is still wrestling with ankle issues relating to the high ankle sprain he suffered in high school. I hope he gets healthy because he is just a really good basketball player. Since getting here for summer school everything has been below the rim. Because he is so tough he still figures a way to contribute but until he gets healthy we are not going to see the great athlete he was in high school. He barely played his senior year and still scored over 2,000 points. So far Zach Jacobs has probably been the best freshman but he is currently in dry dock recovering from surgery on his thumb/hand. He should be fine and not miss too much time when practice starts next month. Greg Jones has probably been the most pleasant surprise. He is a flat out alpha dog and leader. He is a man without a position who is still going to play lots of minutes. The big surprise is how well he is shooting threes when left open. Stuckey and Joey are playing real well which is kind of expected. Matt Lewis played great during summer school but struggled from the 2 point line in the virgin islands. Matt recently injured his knee and hopefully it is not serious. Snowden and Scissum have been up and down. Antanee Pinkard is a great above the rim athlete who plays hard. He transfered from junior college after one year so he will be a jmu sophomore. He is a work in progress but he does not have to go far to become a contributor.

Thanks for the update Bogey. I just renewed my basketball season tickets. I am excited for the season. It is disappointing to hear how banged up the guys are leading up to the start of the season.

I hope the guys can get healthy in time for CAA play.

RE: 2018 Mens Hoops Recruiting
Low-major is correct. JMU hasn't been a mid-major since Lou Campanelli was coach and we went to the NCAAs five times. One trip under Lefty and a couple of nice wins against decent teams. One trip under Brady that was an accident as much as anything. Mid-majors go to the NCAA tourney more than once in a generation.

Now, I'd say we're a solid mid-major in women's hoops...or were under Kenny.

"Mid-major"...hate that term, and the horse it rode in on (which were the talking heads on Sports in Spanish (ESPN-like) programs promoting the P5 schools. Lefty railed against the term too. The terms has done "major" damage to college sports, and have turned them into minor-league farm systems for the pros.

Coach Rowe was in to visit Taevion Kinsey the other day- staff putting in work on the guys who just visited JMU to get commitments. In separate news JMU offered several Gonzaga (DC) players the other day (2019 and 2020 recruits).

Thanks for the update. Should be a lot of movement over the next 4-6 weeks regarding verbal commitments being made. Fingers crossed we can land a couple (or three).

My high school. I can say without blinders on, that Gonzaga plays in one of the toughest conferences in the country. Think DeMatha. Matt Lewis played in the same conference. If he doesn't pan out, it is definitely NOT because he dominated lesser competition.

A measure of the quality of that conference is that Matt was probably the third option on an ok team in that conference. The center is going to Providence and the rising junior point guard is getting ACC looks.

Clearly JMU is not part of the Adidas payola scheme. This is good news!

I said it to folks at work, but if we were part of this scheme, we should be punished for not doing it well!
