I bet it would be easier to save the $20 a month if stopped spending the extra couple dollars on over priced junk at the 7/11 on the way to and from work.

To me in my lifestyle it's just easier clicking on the one remote and seeing the guild. Pick sports. Check the list of whats on. Then watch it.

that's how Sling, Youtube TV and Hulu Live work.

They're month-to-month. No two-year contract.

You can try Sling one month, PS Vue the next, DirecTV Now the next, etc.

And I'm willing to bet your season ticket cost that what you pay this month for one of those. It will be lot more two years from now.

I'm not going to quote the long post on Directv will answer it here.

With the prices I listed...
Includes monthly equipment fees
for up to 4 rooms and the HD DVR
monthly service fee.

Even if that a true... why not save $ now while you can?

Yes, you'd need a device for each location. The Roku Sticks or Amazon Fire Sticks are $40.

We each have different things that important to each of us. Right now convenience is worth the extra money. As I said I can cut out cost somewhere else, easier. To be honest I don't watch a lot of TV unless it's college football, some NFL and college basketball. But I travel watching Western's home and away games so even on those it's not a lot.

I did try the streaming before we got a new two year contract with Directv but one didn't have CBSS and one didn't have the Big10 and one didn't have FoxSports. So it just wasn't my cup of tea. Even if I could save $25 a month.

Someone else the money will be more important. Someone else might just like feeling like they are with the latest tech. Convenience and easy of use...plus my wife likes the travel channel and those freaking ghost hunter shows. She says nothing about the time and money I spend on Western sport. So the least I can do is make it easy for her to find Ghost Hunters

Yes, each TV needs a streaming player.

I have two Roku boxes, a Roku streaming stick, a Fire TV stick and a PS4.

Like I mentioned previously, I had 5 DirectTV receivers, one per TV.

Now I have 5 streaming devices, one per TV.

But to be clear, I had a few of those streaming devices even when I had DirecTV.

If you want to use an antenna for over-the-air channels, you'll need either:

One indoor/outdoor antenna feeding into a 2-way, 4-way, 8-way etc splitter. The one antenna feed into the splitter will feed multiple TVs via the splitter outputs. TV's have built-in tuners so you can plug in the antenna coax cable to your TV and it will sort out all the channels.

The other option is one indoor antenna per TV.

True.

Roku has partnered with a few manufacturers to build Roku TVs. These are actual TVs with wifi and Roku software built in.

In this sense, the TV is your streaming device.

With that said, I'm close to cutting, though it isn't about the cost, but more about the principle of giving money to media outlets that I despise. You can stream pretty much anything you want these days anyway.

Or do the two years in the wife's name and the next two years in your name switching every two years. That's what we do with Directv

Anyone paying $150 a month and switching to a $35 a month streaming service is not comparing apples to apples.

My two years just ran out this past month. We called and got it in my wife's name for the next two years. 185 channels (mostly useless but needed for free NFL Sunday) 4 rooms with whole house DVR and free HD...

total bill $65 a month and 3 free months of HBO/ST..movie channels

After 12 months it goes up to $99 a month. But in year 2 we will drop the package down to 150 channels and pay $76 a month. For saying I can get a better deal with Dish in year 2 I got a $130 off spread out over 13-24

I gave each of the streaming services a test ride for a free 7 day trial. What I found you can not stream espn on 2 TVs at the same time. One will cutoff. With the most expensive package they allowed 3 (might have been 4) streams devices but not if you are watching the same channel.

If a person is paying $150 a month for Directv they have EXTRAS they ordered. Below are the cost for each package

ULTIMATE ALL INCLUDED
245+ $ 75.00 mo Plus taxes. For 12 mos. w/24 mos. TV agmt. $134/mo. in mos. 13-24

XTRA ALL INCLUDED
230+ channels $ 70.00 mo Plus taxes. For 12 mos. w/24 mos. TV agmt. $124/mo. in mos. 13-24

CHOICE ALL INCLUDED
185+ channels $ 60.00 mo Plus taxes. For 12 mos. w/24 mos. TV agmt. $115/mo. in mos. 13-24

ENTERTAINMENT ALL INCLUDED
155+ channels $ 55.00 mo Plus taxes. For 12 mos. w/24 mos. TV agmt. $101/mo. in mos. 13-24

SELECT ALL INCLUDED (includes espn, espn2, fs1)
150+ channels $ 50.00 mo Plus taxes. For 12 mos. w/24 mos. TV agmt. $90/mo. in mos. 13-24

Just to clarify, I had 5 DirecTV HD receivers with DVR:
1. Den
2. Master BR
3. Mother-in-law's room
4. Playroom
5. Media room

My package was Choice at $115 / month base price.

My package provided 1 receiver. I had to pay equipment fees for the other 4 receivers.

Plus they had an equipment upcharge for HD and another upcharge for DVR.

PS Vue gives me 5 profiles:
1. Me
2. Wife
3. Daughter
4. Mother-in-law
5. Extra

Each profile has its own DVR feature.

PS Vue has 4 bundles, with each tier including more channels than the prior tier:
1. Access - $39.99
2. Core - $44.99
3. Elite - $54.99
4. Ultra - $74.99

I forgot that my package is about to go up $10/mth.

At first, PS Vue had two pricing structures: one without local channels and one with. The local channels structure was $10/mth higher.

When they started they didn't have agreements with local broadcasters in every market.

When I signed up they didn't offer local channels in Memphis - which was fine with me. So my prices was for Core was $34.99. That changes at the end of October. It goes up to $44.99.

Core is the one I was looking at too.

Clear something up for me-

So we have one whole house DVR, then a separate cable box in three places- Master Bdrm, playroom, living room. As of now, max is 2 spots cause as of 3 weeks ago that's all that's left of us unless the dog starts watching.

So when you say 5 "profiles" what does that mean? If I want to watch in the playroom (soon to be mancave) and there's no "box", how does it receive the programming from the PS, which would be downstairs?

Do we need another device for each location?

I set up an account on Sony's PlayStation site. That account serves as my PS Vue login. That account also serves as my PlayStation gaming login etc, but that's not important here.

Now that you have a PS Vue account you can download the PS Vue app to any of your streaming devices.

I have 5 streaming devices. Each one has the PS Vue app.

When you launch the app you'll have to log in the first time. After that, it will remember your login.

Once you're logged in to PS Vue you will create a profile. You can have a total of 5 profiles: one for you, one for your wife, etc.

When you're watching TV you'll want to use your profile.

<< wife needs to use the computer. I'll be back later. >> :D

FAQ | Smithsonian Channel

Quote:If I don't currently get Smithsonian Channel through my cable provider, are there other ways to watch it?

Full episodes and videos from the Smithsonian Channel are available on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Netflix, and several other digital and mobile platforms. Check out our Ways to Watch page for a full list of digital viewing options.

I'm not sure if that's a free channel.

Logged on to my Roku account and found the Smithsonian channel. Here's what it says:

Quote:Watch full episodes and short videos from Smithsonian Channel's vast library of shows about everything from space exploration to world history and wild animals to popular music.

I'll add the channel and check it out. I'll let you know if it appears to be free.

Any particular show you're interested in? I'll check if it's available.

When I went to my ROKU account this is what I found under View & activate free trial offers. Might be different channel than just Smithsonian?

Start your 30-day FREE* trial of Smithsonian Earth today! Value: $3.99

All Smithsonian earth is are nature programs, we tried it, not much bang for the buck. The Regular Smithsonan app is free, but most programs are only samples, there are a few complete shows.

Is there a key on any? If so you would need to log in with your cable/dish/direct user name and password.

Actually if you have a parent, sibling, friend that uses cable or a dish you can download just about all channels they get, to your ROKU (probably any other stick) and watch through their sign in info.

My youngest son does this with our Directv sign in info and gets every channel we get. He uses his Laptop connecting to DirectV and streams it out to his TV. He can even watch shows we have recorded to the DVR.

If you think about it if a couple family members got together and one liked streaming and one wired boxes...split the cost $35 each, $50 year 2, and you both get deals.

Lol.

All that schit and you can't get the wifey her own computer?!?

C'mooooooon, man. 04-cheers

Do I need another device of some sort for each location?
Yes, you'd need a device for each location. The Roku Sticks or Amazon Fire Sticks are $40.

Sent from my SM-J700T using CSNbbs mobile app

Walmart $29.00 or you can spend a little over 10x that and get the 55 inch 4UDK TCL ROKU TV with Crystal clear picture for $325

True.

Roku has partnered with a few manufacturers to build Roku TVs. These are actual TVs with wifi and Roku software built in.

In this sense, the TV is your streaming device.

But you still need other devices for other rooms, right?

But a 55" for 325$ is pretty freaking amazing. Geeeeeez., what I paid back a few years ago...

I'm new to streaming sticks but I fairly sure you need a stick for each TV. Unless your TV has mirroring and then if your phone is compatible you can stream what you see on your phone to your TV.

The same goes for a laptop mirror it out or you can use HDMI with that.

My wife likes to watch some of the older shows on CBS All Access. I had to get her a ROKU for her TV. It's a 55 inch Hisense smart TV ($395) and it has a better picture than any TV in the house. Including my son's very expensive samsung tv. But the apps you can download are limited. So it needed a streaming stick.

In my very limited experience I'm amaze by this thing and all the free channels you can get. But you do need one for each TV.

I think soon it's going to be a lot of splitting cable bills between friend and family. With one wired with boxes and another streaming what they watch.

As I said earlier my son who has his own home gets the same Directv channel as I do (using my email and password) on his laptop and streams it to his TV...for free

If you already pay for Netflix or HULU the stick really pays for itself. I dropped my HULU used the 2 free moth trial that came with it. There was also a 1 month free trial for Netflix. So my son dropped his and used this one. And there's 1 free month of CBS All Access.

RE: Who's a Cord Cutter?
"Cord Cutters" humor me. In Aug, I did it. Well, I didn't cut any cords, but I did give up the sat tv that'd I'd been enjoying for almost a decade due to the insane prices they charge.

So now, I have Roku and retained my Netflix account through it. I haven't added anything else, but my wife is always wanting to watch live, streaming tv (a lot of channels don't offer that through Roku). To get a lot of the channels you're used to... you have to pay per channel or have someone's cable (of some type) sign on. So either way... you're gonna end up paying something.

Many people split things, like you give me your Netflix sign on and I'll give you my DirecTV sign on, etc.

The reason they humor me is they have this grandstanding attitude towards cable and how obnoxiously priced it is, but have no issue with someone else being ripped off so they can benefit from it at a cheaper price. I don't dislike the normal people that do it, but the people that have this "cord cutting" persona and attitude about it crack me up.

Not sure I understand your point (see bold).

RE: Who's a Cord Cutter?
Just an FYI...

I hear about people sharing their login info with others.

I don't know why they chose Tennessee, but Netflix filed some kind of suit so the Tennessee legislature passed a bill making it illegal to share your account info with others. The governor signed it so now it's the law.

So... no login info shared with others.

Tennessee Law: Sharing Your Netflix Password Could Land You In Jail

Password sharing is not a federal crime… But it is still illegal in Tennessee

After reading through these articles I see that this was a reaction to a federal case involving other parties.

RE: Who's a Cord Cutter?
I'm considering it very very hard. My main downside is I have a bespoke Linux/MythTV DVR setup that allows me to hardware encode at FULL BROADCAST QUALITY on the fly. The ability to take a one hour show, can it out without commercials but maintaining full bitrate and DTS 5.1 surround? Oooooo that's nice. And nobody on the streaming side comes close to that kinda quality for TV programming. Netflix and Vudu do high quality streaming. But none of it is live.

I could probably save $30-50/mo cutting the cord. It doesn't sound like much, but you can buy a lot of beer with $350-$600/yr. I would probably pull the trigger right now if I had something more MythTV friendly to go to.
