Did we screw up ...
by refusing to invite Liberty and kicking out Idaho?

If yesterday is any indication, it will be a long year for the Sun Belt.

Hopefully, USA can beat OSU, ASU can beat Miami or the Warhawks can sneak up on FSU.

If Liberty and Idaho are not good enough for us, maybe we should invite Tennessee State and Jackson State. They have great fans, travel well, are in the middle of our geographic footprint and can compete immediately.

Baylor had to get rid of the Briles tree.

Unfortunately he was the only coach that ever made them relevant.

Also, ******* lol.

Friend of mine is a BU alum. Apparently they had a lot of people missing.

Just keep playing. People don't know the details. Both rb are out so a fresh player rb. 3 secondary guys are hurt or suspended so 3 fresh started in secondary. Offense was ok. They will get better. Liberty was actually good. Qb and 2 6"4 wr were money.

Its the same doom and gloom thought process every start of the year, 1 week doesnt make a season, get over if your team lost stop thinking that every time one of us loses to a p5 program with way more resources we act like we are savannah state calibre... Just breathe

At the time the decision was made, I wouldn't necessarily call it a mistake. But Idaho is currently one of the top programs in the Sun Belt and is helping the conference financially. Intelligent organizations revisit decisions when the facts change. Frankly, the Sun Belt still has all the leverage and could offer Idaho another temporary deal, leaving your option open to kick us out if we start to suck again.

I don't think the SB "Screwed up" but I do think they were short-sighted. Much as JMU was when they turned down the SBC. Doesn't really matter how Baylor does the rest of the year, Liberty got some good PR with the win as an upcoming FBS independent team.

Credit to them when it's due.... They beat a P5 team, and that's impressive, particularly since (I THINK) they are FCS.

I still don't think it was a mistake not to invite them, but they won and deserve credit for that.

Agreed, but I'm still glad they're NOT in The Belt . . .

Considering the reason(s) for Baylor's recent fall from grace, I wouldn't mind if they went 0 fer . . I know that it would suck for the kids that had nothing to do with that scandal, but that program deserves whatever suckage befalls it . . . .

Liberty is doing very well. They are also not a good fit for the SBC.

Idaho is still outside the footprint.

NMSU is the one we should question, if we are going to question.

Benson should go ahead and put every program on double secret probation. If anyone else loses this season then they get the ax. No questions asked. This conference has got to do better. 01-swc

I don't care if Liberty won the National Championship I wouldn't want them. Sorry.

Dropping NMSU might have been a mistake though.

Liberty wasn't rejected on competition grounds so winning at Baylor is irrelevant to the discussion.

Moscow, Idaho is no closer to the rest of the Sun Belt since improving in football than they were when the decision was made, so improvement is irrelevant to the discussion.

We still have options why can't we still get both I rather 12 anyway

East
Liberty
GAST
GASO
App St
Troy
CCU

West
NMSU
Louisiana
ULM
Ark St
TxSt
USA

Let's do it we can add them football only. I would want NMSU because of basketball. We wouldn't even have to move them up.

Falwell recently stated the below. I doubt they'd accept a sbc or cusa invite at this point, now that the scheduling conundrum is resolved. Admittedly, a little bit of a passive aggressive jab, and the majority of the games will be g5 still. But ultimately, they maintain the freedom to fashion their scheduling future, which is the point. Both sides ultimately got what they wanted.

Quote:“The teams that we’re bringing in here are household name teams,” Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. said. “They’re teams everybody recognizes. A lot of ACC teams. That’s going to bring in huge crowds. If we had gone to the Sun Belt or Conference USA, the teams that we’d be playing, people around here wouldn’t recognize the names anymore than they do with the Big South. Being independent is so much better for us in football.”

IMHO he's right so just let them go on as an indy. those that want to can put them on their schedule. I'd rather have nmsu, a state flagship school, than Liberty and the controversy people will gin up over them. nobody in my part of the country heard of them till yesterday. nmsu is a school everyone around here is familiar with.

Unless Baylor is the new Kansas. Then Liberty should have been favored. The 50 guys good FCS teams travel with generally are as good as middle of the pack G5 programs. Baylor may be below that middle level G5 this year as they essentially received a modified version of the death penalty; public shaming so bad that they will return to their historical mean.

RE: Did we screw up ...
The SBC made the right decision to not invite Liberty. And LU now as an indy, would not be wise to accept an invite from the SBC if offered. Both will be better off without each other as conference members. Let OOC games be scheduled against LU when appropriate. LU will benefit much more the indy path, with the strength of their FBS schedule than a conference alignment with the SBC.

I checked lines before the LU/Baylor game. Baylor was favored by 35+ points and LU had a 2.2% chance of victory.
