The water rose 4 feet in less than 30 minutes. Probably just street flooding. Stopped right at the door. Then the rain suddenly stopped and the water went away.

Hope you stay dry, but sounds like its time to make sure you have a bag packed with irreplaceables so you don't have to do it at the last second. (in the old days-like 10 years ago-you would want pictures as well as documents-now I guess you can copy it all on a thumb drive).

The scary part of it is this....I'm literally at the highest point inside loop 610 (my house is 72 feet above msn).

My Bayou has receded, and is back in its banks. If we don't get another 20 inches of rain today, I *might* be okay. I'm staying unless it gets dire. My next door neighbors are 88, 83, and 92 years old and live alone. If I have to jet, its going to be a real mess for my neighbors. We have a house with a second story to move to.

My Go Pack has - insurance info, a passport, my medications, and cash and wallet. I have an air mattress an axe and a hammer. Also a life jacket and some food and water (in a small icechest).

Even though I'm out of the 500 year flood plain, I have flood insurance.

The best of luck to you. Stay safe.

He made it sound like his church is completely surrounded by water, so that noone can get there. I would like confirmation of that, though. Our church opened up twice to house displaced people from Katrina and a hurricane after Katrina, and we're in west tn.

Did anyone think that it might be darn near impossible for any Church employees to get there for some time?
Also the larger the venue the more support staff, logistical, and security you need. Is city hall open, how about the arena where the Rockets play?

The thing about opening Lakewood Churh, like SFBCat said, getting there would be the problem. A lot of the streets are still flooded. The water is going down, but not fast enough and it would be putting people at risk, if they were trying to get there.

These are the current closed streets because of high water. Lakewood Church is across the highway, from West Park Drive, right above West University Place.

Yes, it has (or at least the Summit had before it was converted) a big underground parking facility and its right on the access roads which always flood. Richmond Avenue behind the facility tends to be quick to flood as well. I imagine there are several feet of water in the parking area.

As pointed out above, I don't know how anyone can get there. Lots of red on that map. I have seen lots of pictures of West University south of there and the streets are flooded. Maybe a pickup can get through, but I wouldn't send a Honda through there. Looks like the water is higher in West U. now than in Allison in 2001.

And cars going through flooded streets cause damage. They create waves that pushes water into houses and into parked cars. They can also move partially submerged cars. My Dad realized how flooded his car was when a pickup drove down his street and his car moved about 5 feet.

fair enough. I just thought with the volume of pics on the twitter from the place, it was accessible.

If they don't have food and water there it isn't a good shelter. The Convention Center has that and more.

This was the lower level of Lakewood. The water has since receeded.

There is a public shelter less than a mile from LakeWood. Thats where people should go until it fills to capacity, then they can start overflowing to Lakewood for those that can access the area. It takes an assload of police and volunteers to process people being sheltered. (Otherwise, you will have the Superdome part deux.)

Addicks reservoir overflowing for the first time in history. They were doing releases to prevent that. Article says depth was 108 feet. Didn't realize the reservoir was that deep. Typically there is not really any water there. Its just wetlands and parks.

I'm not a fan of his by any means, but I heard a day before everyone started attacking him that the church was flooded. Knowing the old Summit, it probably was flooded early and often. Sounds like Lakewood Derangement Syndrome.

It was a full-on assault by verified alt-leftists on Twitter. Took all of one day for them to go from "come together" back to their usual, just vile hatred. I'm no fan of Osteen, but it was a disgusting display. If they FEEL (and their feelings are based on absolutely zero facts) you don't do enough, they unleash their feral, unhinged mob on you.

I saw a string of tweets from a woman that lived near Lakewood, and she said that although the church didn't appear to be flooded, all the highways that surround it were. They never once stopped to think that even if he wanted to open it, there were specific reasons as to why he couldn't. They just immediately jump to conclusions, and attack.

The general public is ignorant to what opening a shelter actually entails.

In addition to food and water there needs to be satisfactory sanitary facilities. It's not a healthy situation for anybody if the sewer system isn't working and you have a couple hundred people crapping and peeing in overflowing toilets. You also from a safety and hygiene standpoint need some way for these people to clean themselves, especially if they have been in contaminated floodwaters, because if not all you are doing is running the risk of spreading disease. You need somewhere for them to sleep. Push comes to shove they can sleep on the floor but you need blankets, etc. Ideally you'll have rudimentary medical treatment available for minor stuff....cuts, bruises, etc. You need some kind of security.

It's not as simple as "opening your doors", but as usual don't let anything like facts get in the way of an opportunity to bash someone you don't like.

I think we're in the swath that has between 40 and 50 inches (although I don't know if I trust that map - I do know for sure we've received close to 35 inches). Anyway we're handling it and the awesome news for us is the Brazos River crest projection levels have been lowered! The roads are clear to get back to my house and if the river projections remain the same the rest of the day, I may go back to my house later tonight. We haven't had any flooding in our neighborhood despite the significant rain.

RE: Hurricane Harvey
Got this email from a business partner.

This has been apocalyptic. My husband, daughter, and I are fine. Our daughter lives a mile and a half from us in Houston's museum district, and her street has remained dry. We all have power, but are living on "islands" of a cluster of homes surrounded by flooded homes and neighborhoods.

During the past three days, my husband and I experienced the highest water we have ever seen on our block in West University, which is a close-in area inside Houston's Loop 610. Water was up to the steps on our porch on two occasions, and we feared the worst as the rain was unrelenting. Our street remained a river (or lake) depending upon the time and drained somewhat by Monday morning. The water is receding here, and although the rain continues, it is no longer falling with the same blinding intensity that we saw earlier.

The sounds have been frightening--heavy rain, forceful winds, rain and wind, helicopters, boats, and the sounds of frogs croaking with an ambient "music" of countless alarms and sirens announcing "flash flood warning, seek higher ground." In addition, Houston has been under tornado warnings with "seek shelter immediately" instructions. This has added to every one's stress level.

Since we had power, cell service, and Internet connections at our home, I spent most of Sunday helping 23 strangers in nearby neighborhoods get evacuated by USCG helicopters from their rooftops (13 people plus pets and 6 people plus pets) and a mother with 3 young daughters trapped in their stairwell get evacuated by boat. Early on, the communication network and procedures that must be followed were not explained clearly. I learned that there is specific information required in order to be put on an official list for emergency evacuation and for rescue prioritization. There are numerous numbers that you can call to reach various authorities, agencies, and multiple municipalities, and there were no comprehensive lists of all the numbers and step-by-step procedures that need to be followed. In addition, the callers did not understand that they needed to be persistent as it was taking over an hour to get through to the authorities.

On Sunday afternoon, I could see that the need for rescues was multiplying, and I couldn't respond personally to all the pleas I was seeing in close-by neighborhoods. As a result, I sent out the written procedures and instructions for volunteers to follow in order to get help for their friends, family, and neighbors. I was happy to hear from the 23 people about their safe evacuation, as well as others. The need for evacuation is continuing, and it is exhausting. The City remains focused on rescues again today, and I hope they are successful as the stories are chilling.

On a very sad note, the receptionist at my husband's law firm lost her in-laws and two nieces when they were swept into one of the bayous. Their bodies have not been recovered yet.

Some buildings in downtown Houston have flooded. To my knowledge, the affected portion is an 8 block area close to Buffalo Bayou and includes my husband's building, which took on approximately 8' of water. This morning, one of his partners confirmed that the water has subsided on the ground floor, but that the building remains closed. In addition, the Wortham Center, where the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet perform, suffered damage. Given the extent of this storm and its continuation, there will be other commercial buildings in the area that are impacted.

And, then there is Rockport. My husband and I have a waterfront home on Copano Bay, which was ground zero for Harvey's landing. Rockport will be without power, water, Internet, gas, and phones for 2-4 weeks. Our street is virtually impassible, and everyone we know evacuated. One of our friends was able to return yesterday afternoon and went by our home briefly. He told us that although we suffered roof damage (and possibly damage to the interior), our house is still standing. This is good news and is in sharp contrast to our other friends, three of whom lost their homes.

We are trying to remain safe and dry here in Houston and hope that this rain stops! Ron and I are fortunate.
