Ok, Khaled has produced/featured/created/performed with and for every major rap artist in the world. Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem, Kanye, Jay Z, etc. etc. Bottom line, every recruit who listens to hip hop of any form, knows DJ Khaled. Period. The salt is strong with this board already and we haven't even kicked off yet. Just because most of you are 65+ and have zero understanding of popular music culture, doesn't mean we shouldn't be excited about it. I agree with Topperfan84, there isn't a single person of merit in any facet of popular culture could give two less craps about MTSU, so I would be a little jealous if I was their fan base too. Only natural.

He's closer to Big Pun than he is to Biggie.
He'll long be remembered for All I Do is Win, but I doubt he ever has a bigger hit
No. DJ Kahled is a big deal. I would imagine 4-6 out of every 10 hip-hop/R&B songs over the past 5 years have had his influence on those tracks.
He is not a rapper, but a DJ; he produces music. The comparison to Biggie is misplaced. Khaled is this hip hop generation's version of Funkmaster Flex, DJ Clue, or Swizz Beatz (these 3 dudes are all considered hip-hop giants).
On the song you mentioned, you should have noticed he doesn't rap at all...that track, like any track that he headlines, enlist other rappers to perform over a beat he created.
He's not even Pharrel, no way is he remembered alongside pioneers, especially the likes of Funkmaster Flex.
Perhaps if he actually made an appearance on your campus wearing your gear, that would have been a "big deal", but his assistant holding his phone while he throws out buzzwords and coach speak?
I realize it's the offseason, but c'mon...
Tho I may agree he may have a bit ways to go get to Funkmaster Flex's level, what Khaled is doing for hip hop/R&B right now is not something anyone should be discounting. Flex (from the late 80's), Pharrell (starting out with Teddy Riley & The New Jack Swing Era) have longevity, being doing it for a long time...obviously, Flex for much longer.
And Khaled's relevancy is far too young for him to be remembered with the greats...but to draw a comparison of his efforts for this generation of hip hop heads to what the greats did for their particular generation is prudent...hence, the reason I said "THIS GENERATION'S VERSION OF..."
You don't get to work with best hip hop and R&B artists of today without being respected in the industry (Kanye is a once in a lifetime story), and doing it for a while to become respected. This translates to one becoming big time if those artists are seeking you out to produce songs for them/or to guest appear on his songs.
Offseason has nothing to do with this conversation you added to....and I have not being on campus for 22 years (saved for a few games here and there), so, I wouldn't know who of fame makes it to campus without it being announced on message boards or in the news...however, I would be no less excited for the buzz their appearance creates (like Tori Bowie winning the 100m World Championship yesterday, sure she'll be back on campus this fall)...
But I'm still and will forever be a hip hop head, and that alone all but qualifies me to know who and what is big time in the hip hop community.
I didn't say DJ Khaled is a nobody, I said him filming a minute long promo filled with buzzwords and coach speak is "not a big deal".
Further, what about this video makes you think Khaled "gives two craps" about Western? Big Boi played a postgame game concert at Middle when I was an undergrad, it no more meant he gave two craps about us than this Khaled video means he gives two craps about Western.
Regarding the rest of your rambling, I am not remotely close to 65+, I am not salty, I am not jealous, I'm also not envious, which is the word you meant to use when you used "jealous".

Yes, I'm 55 y/o and Big Boi played a postgame concert when I was an undergrad...
I came of age with Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, NIN, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, etc not to mention one of the best local indy scenes in the country (Self, The Katies, The Features, etc) right there in the Boro.
As for hip hop/rap, we had Ice Cub, Dr. Dre, Snoop, B.I.G., Beastie Boys, Mary J Blige, etc.
This next generation is having a hard time living up to their predecessors skillz.

LOL! You said "Khaled was no big deal...closer to Pun than he is Biggie..."
Right, he's not a big deal, doesn't make him a "nobody", but if you want to play semantics police, please feel free.
My Man. What the heck are you on about?
You added to a conversation...I chose to respond to you with a different observation. Then you backed that up with tangents and to follow, misstating what you previously said.
I could not care any less about semantics or policing...but on your remarks; they are akin to an ineffective bob & weave, as to you firing-off subtle shots and somehow expecting not to be hit...not cool!

Let me be clear, DJ Khaled is not a big deal, him recording this video is also not a big deal.

Now that you are clear...Are you sure what you are claiming is something popular opinion agrees with?
If you don't like the guy...then you don't like the guy...heck maybe you even like the guy, but still have your opinion of him...
but your opinion still does not take away from what he means to the current hip hop generation...who thinks, He's a pretty big deal and something WKU can spin in their favor, which makes it a big deal for them.
