RE: Quarterback this season
I just don't see how you can draw conclusions about Santa's passing especially when he was like #4 QB when he got thrown into his first game, I'm sure he had no reps with the first string offense until before his second game, and he did better in that game. I personally need to see more than that to have any idea how good he is.

Well, Graham managed it against Boise, though IIRC he was just coming off of an injury. Plus, Santa ran well at least.

Remember that Iowa game when Jordan Lynch sucked as a QB? Remember the season before when they didn't allow him to throw the ball, and just run? I'm not ready to draw conclusion on Santa yet. Hoping Childers is the real deal though.

RE: Quarterback this season
People decide how good someone is based on his first half of football nowadays.
You wouldn't be able to field a team if you dumped a player based on that.
Chandler was replaced by Jerry Kill and if that QB had a good game there would have been no Harnish legacy.

I just would hate to see Childers sit because of Carey's fear of playmakers, and because he has not been in the program for 3 or 4 years. NIU does not have the luxury to play QBs because they are juniors or seniors, just have to have the best player out there

No...no one sucked as much as Santa in his 1st game. We've had walk on play better.

With how shaky Santa looked, and slow to read things last year @ EMU, its a little disheartening to think he would be in the discussion. Is Childers that far behind?
I just don't trust Carey, at all. He will choose A) the upper classmen B) the player that will play it safe and not make turnovers, while at same time never making big plays. I don't think the best player is high on Carey's evaluation criteria.
How do we/you know who the "best player" is? Santa came in to the EMU game right before half with the team down by 21. No doubt he threw poorly; but he ran for nearly 100 yards, which likely had an impact on Huff's monster game. He also made a huge pass to KG in OT which led to the winning TD. The next week he is a dropped pass away from a 300 yard game, again leading the team to victory. Why is it disheartening that he apparently had a solid practice and may be ahead of Childers? Carey and his staff must win this year; collectively, they are going with the QB that gives them the best chance. They will choose Childers over Graham and Santa if he is "the best". It's ridiculous to draw any conclisuoons on either Santa or Childers based on the limited body of work. FYI, Hall of Famer Ryne Sandburg went 1-32 to start his Cub career; somebody saw some amazing potential in spite of his horrible start.
We do know Santa and Graham are not good passers. I don't think you can get by with that this year. Teams are going to be loading up to stop NIU's run. It's going to take a QB that can throw
One thing for sure Santa has an arm over Graham. It is night and day difference and he will get better with accuracy, which comes with time at the college level. As much as people have been calling for Childers, I want someone (Santa) who has had some actual game time at the college level coming out 9/1 against one of the better defenses (was last time we played them anyways). Santa improved each game he was in and with the off-season would expect to only have gotten better.
BC is beatable and think we will win, but with a freshman we have no idea what we are going to get. Start Santa, let Childers get a few snaps as a runner to get his feet wet and see what happens.

This is headed to a Twilight style feud. Team Childers will carry on about Santas bad passing game vs EMU. And Team Santa will argue Childers has shown nothing to warrent support. Team Graham will sit back quietly hoping their son gets the start.

I don't think its headed to a feud. We know the limitations and shortcomings Santa and Graham bring. Childers at least has the potential of a significant upside. The way Carey runs this offense all three QBs will get killed anyway. I'm sure we will see all three of them, if not due to injury than by Carey rotating all three in and out so he doesn't have to make any decisions

And we still won that game......and he still has way more upside than Graham. I'll take anyone but Graham ( Graham has reached his max potential)

RE: Quarterback this season
This thread is getting tired; The only QB with a sufficient sample size is Graham; it has had some ups and some downs; it is logical to assume that he is better today than he was as a Freshman and Sophmore. Unless you're Bill Walsh, drawing any conclusion on Freshman after his first 6 quarters of play is ridiculous. The only thing more ridiculous is making iron clad assessments on a player based on a HS highlight film and 2 series of a controlled scrimmage. I would like to think that whoever wins the starting job would have earned it; and the decision was based solely on the fact that he gives the team the best chance to win.

Another three man QB rotation. Carey needs to go asap. Just can't take this anymore

You mean like the last time when they won 10 games at the conference?

I have no problem with a QB rotation for 2 or even 3 games. This season is only about winning the mac west. If it takes a couple of in-game reps for the best QB to emerge, so be it. Just get me the best man by conference play. In 2014 Hare was my least favorite QB in that 3 way battle. Everything he did just looked awkward....running, passing. But he showed what he could do when things went live. He won that job at Northwestern. If the safe pick, McIntosh, was made and he played just good enough to keep the job, but nothing more, maybe Hare never sees the field.

But they both have gimicky, terrible unnatural colored fields. Makes them similar enough in my book.
