Actually ... funny thought: Minnesota could go completely independent and simply refuse to have any type of military. It would essentially be protected, for free, by Canada and the USA, being in the middle of the continent.

Comedy Gold!!

Good luck with surviving the Constant Drone Strikes,.. just to keep your new Muzzie State in check. Aldo embrace Sharia.

As for Cali.... good riddance.. and turn in the US Navy and Energy. Oh yes, no more water except the salty goodness from the Pacific

Unless they ticked off the US.

They wouldn't have to worry about ticking off Canada.
The amount of money they'll get taxed for all their goods, supplies, and infrastructure coming through the US would be incredible.

Correct. The "United States" will consist of the southeast, Texas, and midwest. Maryland/DC will be gone so the new capital will have to be someplace like Oklahoma City.

It does well within a given dynamic. If you remove that monetary dynamic it would be unlikely to survive.
They'd be ok for awhile because they wouldn't fund a military so they could pay for their socialism. Eventually, illegals would take over and overwhelm the social system, and very possibly, the Mexican Army would take over the political system.

They would be part of Mexico before long. I don't say that flippantly. I think that would occur fairly rapidly.
Not much stopping that from happening without US government protection. I think it would likely occur via annexation after the illegal population gets to the point where California would agree to it without hostilities.

Possible that SoCal secedes and joins Mexico.....some of the rest secedes and joins the US...some of "Cascadia" secedes and joins Canada....and San Fran becomes Hong Kong 2.

So would those 55 electoral votes (well, less the 2 senate votes) be dispersed proportionately among the remaining states or would they be removed?

Removed. They represent population.

It is proportional but with a cap at 435. Once you get to 435 you just shuffle those 435 around proportionally regardless of overall population increases.

California leaving may not result in the number dropping below 435.

They will have the ability to bar entry to people from Texas, Alabama, North Carolina, etc. And I fully expect them to use it freely. Open for everyone else though.

Doubtful. Tourism is a huge part of Calif economy.

If you want to visit California and drop stacks of cash there, they're not going to bar you from entry. They're going to usher you in. Regardless that the country you're from has sh__ty policies.

Just expect that the border guard will ask you, very promptly after the first question (why are you visiting), the second question of "when are you going BACK to America?"

RE: CalExit not dead!
California needs to form a new nation, along with Mexico and other South American Countries, and even possibly Hawaii, joining them as states in their new nation. And if the much of the Northeast panics at the thought, then let them join the new nation, too--or like someone else suggested, incorporate into Canada.

The rest of the remaining US would be just fine.

Finally, you'd have a nation (actually two of them) that wasn't so divided, as is this one now.

Why wouldn't the seats and votes just disappear?

Because the number of congressmen is based on population with a cap at 435. It's highly unlikely that even a state as big as CA wouild cause us to drop below the cap that would result in A reduction of congressmen

And the US could bar entry from everyone in CA as a result regardless of state they plan to visit.
