Say you had to keep some AAC teams.

We can then go undefeated every year, and sellout most home games due to the names of the opponents!

A super mega awesome "Eastern Athletic Conference":
Northeast Division: Connecticut, Penn State, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple
Mid-Atlantic Division: Maryland, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia
Carolina Division: Clemson, Duke, NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina
Southeast Division: Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami

If you could create your dream conference for football
My dream conference would be....
App State
Liberty
Arkansas Tech
Savannah State
ULM
Eastern Michigan
Hofstra
Bob's Tire and Auto
On a side note Georgia Southern would be in the SEC fighting it out for National Titles. We would however continue to throw App a bone every once in a while.

That's rather interesting, but **** USF in the ACC.
You could easily swap USF with UCF. Doesn't really matter to me which one is in there. I just needed a 4th Florida team to fill out the ACC South.
Here you go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zljwwl3k1wr75m...9.png?dl=0
You have Vanderbilt in both the ACC and SEC
Oops, that was supposed to be WF in the ACC. Good catch, thanks! All fixed now.

That'll never happen. What a stupid lineup, it could never be successful.

RE: If you could create your dream conference for football
Honestly I really like the MAC but if it was to be optimal I would go with something like this (slashed groups is one or the other situation)...
Kent State
Miami OH/Cincinnati
Toledo/BGSU
Ohio
WMU
CMU
Buffalo
Ball State
NIU
Louisville/Pittsburgh
Nice tight footprint with a bunch of schools I like and value on the schedule. Louisville/Pitt is to add a state nearby with schools I think would have been nice to play. Considering how much the Cleveland area hates Pittsburgh the city (or really loves it because they are Steelers/Penguins fans) I would have a slight preference for Pitt but Louisville is in a good spot for the conference.
Having only 10 teams would allow for a champ game now and allows the MAC to choose either an 8 or 9 game schedule and you get adequate crossover either way. If going by 8 games that gives a nice number of OOC games to work with. If Akron is still around they would be good for an OOC game same with the other MAC schools that are not taken. I honestly do not WANT to get rid of any MAC schools but if we are talking dreams the conference probably does not want to have more than one school in any one area of a state. Mulitple in a state makes sense multiple in a small area less so. I think this configuration has good coverage in their areas but not so much density in one state that they get too much in each other's way (for instance Ohio is a decent size state and there is one school in each corner of which three have large or decent sized population centers and the last is Ohio U which is a good school to have too).

Looks like a scaled down MAC to me with an ACC and/or AAC school.

Exactly I like the MAC in general as a conference and as a whole it does a whole lot right for its members. Since I am not interested in money as much as playing schools that are fun to play against historically for my school it makes perfect sense.
Of course in a "dream" scenario there is pie in the sky idea that there is a fair and workable championship scenario that a school from this can legitimately can compete for a championship in football even if it is very difficult.
I am not a fan at all of the Big 10 and its schools (only Michigan State escapes outright dislike being due to the fact that the school treats other institutions much better than the others the jury is still out on Northwestern and Rutgers the rest can go to hell IMO) so that leaves me only a limited set of schools that make a lot sense for my school.

With Penn State on board in 1982, the BE most likely would have been attractive option to Florida State, especially a Florida State/Miami combo. That. in turn, would've given you the leverage to make a better deal with Notre Dame.

RE: If you could create your dream conference for football
Dream Conference for 50 year old and up Notre Dame Fans
GIPPER Conference
(Teams listed in order of importance)
1. Notre Dame
Notre Dame then wins the Gipper Conference and gets invited to the best bowl game...somehow they win the national championship every other year (Don't want to be greedy). Sometimes they have a bad season but their QB still wins the Heisman.
