Why is there even a discussion?

Well, the stats are interesting considering Stockstill had an injured shoulder for most of the year and still put up numbers about as good as White did in 14 games. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, he didn't put up numbers anywhere close to White. I don't think people realize the huge difference. Stockstill would have to make a massive improvement on last year.

Just think about this:

Every time each QB attempted a pass (not completed), White had 3 more yards than Stockstill. Assume each of them throw 40 passes in a game; White throws for 420 yards and Stockstill throws for 312. Take that over 12 games and you are talking about a 1,300 yard difference.

I can understand that there are some questions due to the new offense, but there are questions with the MTSU offensive line and running game as well that may not take pressure off the passing game. People just underestimate how much better White was last year.

Different offense. Brohms offense is much more vertical. He also had great catch and run receivers. MT had one in James. In addition to the aforementioned, MT lost four of its top five receivers before the season started. Only James escaped injury until cracking a rib late in the year.

There are no questions with our OL or running back. The only questions we have are at DL and at DL coach. Well, actually we know we have in the coach.

The starter is going to be Shane Tucker who started as a freshman (blowing up the league), got hurt, and got moved to WR when Mathers came. He was also lost for the year last year. He's moving back to RB and we've already moved some other RBs to WR. The OL is in good shape.

Yes, getting more yards (aka vertical) is better than getting less yards (aka horizontal).

Tucker ran the ball 44 times as a freshman for 5.5 ypa. He ran for 5 ypa the following year and 3.3 ypa in 2015. If that was my back, I would certainly have some concern.

Guess we will just have to wait till the season to start ... Vandy will be a tough test. I keep telling people, if we beat Vandy, I expect us to win 10-12 this year. If not, 8-9. Has the defense improved? The offense will be fine and even better than last year, but defensively we need to step up.

He was asked to blow a redshirt late in the year as a freshman. For whatever reason HC Stockstill has always used running back by committee. Last year was the first time he really went with a feature back in years in Mathers. The only question with Tucker is can he carry that much of a load. I understand why you might look purely at stats and have a concern but if you've ever seen him run you wouldn't.

He's probably a step slower than Mathers but bigger and stronger with great hands. He's going to catch a ton of passes out of the backfield.

Here's some moving pictures. Enjoy... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czJs1DCWYos

This closely resembles our poll. The only difference is UTEP and Rice are switched

The fact Marshall has a 1st place vote makes this meaningless. Marshall is a dumpster fire right now.

Three Best Things that could have happened in Preseason Prognostications:
1. Western has a Target on its' Back Not MT; and
2. QB White has a Target on his Back not QB Stockstill; and
3. Even stoic Daddy Stock has gotta be super-chapped (and motivated) that after 11 years of leading the Raiders a Rookie Coach (and our Arch Rival) is picked over MT AGAIN!!!!!!!!

It seems like a big assumption to think he is motivated. Is he motivated? He certainly doesn't have any incentive.

If he's not sufficiently motivated by Western being picked over MT and by his boy being designated second fiddle to their QB; he is never going to be motivated. As far as my "big assumption", I'm basing it on Human Nature and Basic Machismo. Now, if that's not a part of Daddy Stock's DNA; we are just wasting our time playin' FB at MT anyway.

Well, all he has to do is get to seven wins and gets and $800,000 bonus. So, if incentives are a motivator for him he doesn't have to work as hard to get to that goal. I hope he has that motivation, because you sure can't tell. He always looks and talks like he would rather be watching an episode of the Golden Girls.

You left out the most important one of all for QB's. Passing efficiency. Mike White was 3rd at 181.4 and Brent Stockstill was 22nd at 150.2. You have to give the edge to White without a doubt.
That doesn't mean White will have a better 2017 than Stockstill but based strictly on stats from 2016, I don't see a choice here. Let's hope both guys have an injury free 2017 season.

1. Also had a target on our back last preseason.-How did that work out?
2. Last season, preseason went like this "no way WKU's offense is anywhere close to last season without Doughty
3. Because Daddy Stock is Mr. 8-5, has never proved he can have an offense and defense at the same time, so why would coaches pick MTSU over WKU?

Different offense. Brohms offense is much more vertical. He also had great catch and run receivers. MT had one in James. In addition to the aforementioned, MT lost four of its top five receivers before the season started. Only James escaped injury until cracking a rib late in the year.

There are no questions with our OL or running back. The only questions we have are at DL and at DL coach. Well, actually we know we have in the coach.

Good points 3BL. My only disagreement is with the bolded above. You may be correct, but at this point, you don't know what Sanford's offense is compared to Brohm's. I do know that in the Red-White Game, they were throwing deep a lot. So we will see.
WKU - MTSU should be a great matchup, as always.

RE: 2017 CUSA Preseason Awards
Fair point. I have no idea what type of offense he is going to run this year. Boise and Stanford have what I would consider a anti-spread offenses. Stanford more of a pro set and Boise a variation on a pro style offense. I honestly didn't see a single Notre Dame game last year and know nothing about what they did other than have an average offense statistically speaking.

I would think with Whites skill set that he would do well in a pro style offense but I don't believe he has ever played in one?? Perhaps someone with USF knowledge can correct me if I'm off on that. In the end it probably doesn't make much difference if he can continue to progress as he did under Brohm.

1. That Target on Western's Back is a gonna be a lot larger as you try to three peat than it was last year.
2. You didn't have Doughty; but you still had Brohm (and five other now departed assistant coaches)coaching, Lamp blockin' and Taylor catchin' passes!
3. Fortunately, Stock doesn't coach Defense. We'll just have to match our New Defensive Coordinator with your New Unproven Head Coach.
