It's hard not to love a bolt action, dependable rifle that can be bought for less than $200. Depending on when the one you are purchasing was made (pre-war or during WWII) you can end up with either a really beautiful rifle or a butt ugly one because the ones manufactured during the war weren't machined anywhere near as good as the pre-war models so there's tool marks in the metal.

Add in you can find surplus Warsaw Pact ammo for really cheap, and even the modern non-FMJ rounds one would use for hunting is cheap. I have a box of 150 grain soft points I bought to try for hunting I got for less than $15.

The one draw back to using the surplus ammo is they used corrosive primers. My gunsmith friend told me that as long as you cleaned it after shooting even a couple rounds with hot water (he even said as hot as possible) it will remove the corrosive salts used in the primers. He also said that normal cleaning solvents will not touch them, but can be used after the water bath to remove the other residues.

If you do decide to buy one I suggest checking to see if they have several to choose from as these are surplus weapons and while they mostly have been depot reconditioned some of them do show wear. The one I bought was the third one I looked at. The action seemed tighter and there as less wear in the receiver.

Why would you want a bolt action rifle, which designed for longer range, for a primary firearm? Slower and less capacity.

Bolt action rifles are more reliable and accurate? I wouldn't want one as a primary defensive weapon, I have pistols and AR's for that, but for big game hunting give me a bolt action every time.

I'm aware of all those characteristics. I misread and thought it was a primary weapon.

My 10/22 is great but is apples to oranges to the other Ruger you mentioned. Depends what you are wanting to accomplish.

Two different posters. Oliveandblue is the one talking about the 10/22 and the Ruger Scout.

I've got an old Stevens bolt action .410 and a friend of mine has an old J.C. Higgins bolt action 12 gauge.

But bolt action shotguns are making a comeback, especially for the areas where you are prohibited from using rifles for deer hunting and have to use slugs.

I have a Stevens bolt .410. An old Mossberg 183, too.

.410's remind me of my idyllic childhood on the farm (I never had). Great pieces of Americana, though.

It's target shooting. Self-defense isn't something I've ever came close to needing where I live.

I already have shot a Takedown 10/22 (father's) and fully enjoyed the experience. I love the iron sights on it.

Stepping up in caliber, I've shot a .308 and it was tolerable. Anything past that really wasn't.

I would like to work on bolt-action rifles at some point as well. That's why I mentioned the other gun.

My biggest weakness would be pistols. My aim with those is downright dangerous(ly bad). Revolvers are a whole lot better as long as it's a long barrel.

Get a Semiauto with an RMR. Sight picture will help you on the pistol side of things.

That's about a 600-700 investment. I guess it's reasonable though, since a good gun lasts forever.

Psssht. If there's "war" it's going to be something we're not prepared for. If there is something domestic that goes down it's going to be by hacking and explosives.

Start one. I'm sure it'll be popular.
