Kent Baseball Players in the Pros - 2017 Edition
Another thread to cover the Kent alum:

* Travis Shaw is slated to be the starting 3B of the Brewers. He's had a great spring and the Brewers lost 2B Scooter Gennett, who was the one guy who could have stepped into the lineup (the Brewers would move Perez from 2B to 3B), so the team is committed to Shaw. As far as what to expect, Shaw proved he could handle himself defensively at third, but pitchers found ways to exploit his long swing last year. Shaw is a smart guy who seems to think about hitting 24/7, so I expect him to make some adjustments and be close to average this year, which will suit the Brewers just fine.

* Andrew Chafin made the Diamondbacks as the last guy in the bullpen, in part because the Dbacks wanted a second lefthander. Despite compliments from the manager on how his pitches have come along in the spring, his spring training performance has been kind of rough, include giving up some extra base hits that he normally doesn't. That said, it is spring training. Personally, I think last year was a bit of an aberration (he gave up far too many runs given the rest of his stat line and was generally awesome when he pitched in the minors), so if the injury bug has cleared up (a big fear), I expect Chafin to return to where he was in 2015 and be a very good relief pitcher.

At this point, I don't think any other Kent players are close to making big league clubs. Emmanuel Burriss was reassigned and I expect he'll be at AAA for the Senators. Brian Clark pitched well for the White Sox in spring training and I think has moved considerably up the prospect list to the point where I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the bigs this year.

Thanks for the updates Bopol - any news on Lauer's progress in Padres system?

Lauer is slated to start the year in the Padre's high-A club. I expect he'll be fine there (top college pitching prospects tend to do fine at high-A) and then he'll get to AA and we'll get a good sense of his potential as a prospect.

Thanks - does that mean the Fort Wayne Tincaps? If you haven't been there they have a really nice stadium, if he's there I will definitely make a game - not too far for me.

Lake Elsinore in the California League. Fort Wayne is regular A ball; not high A.

The Brewers will be interesting to watch for Kent/Indians fans this year. I'm intrigued to see what Shaw does without being saddled with a platoon or constantly having to worry that a cold stretch will land him on the bench.

Their first base situation is intriguing too. They brought Eric Thames in on a three year deal to start at first after he spent the last few years in Korea. Then they claimed Jesus Aguilar on waivers from the Indians and he basically forced them to keep him on the active roster in camp. He just missed out on the spring training triple crown hitting .452 (1st), 7 HR (3rd), and 19 RBI (3rd) and they started toying around with playing Thames in the outfield. I always really liked Aguilar's upside with the Indians but obviously he was never going to get a chance once Encarnacion signed. It'll be interesting to see what he can do if he's given an opportunity to play every day.

I think Shaw handled his slump and subsequent benching poorly. Honestly, John Farrell (his manager in Boston) really liked him, so he wasn't screwing with him, he just didn't hit after a certain point last year and, with Boston in the playoff contention, they felt they had to do something at third to get some offense. The Brewers won't be in contention for anything, so Shaw will get a very fair chance. Honestly, he has vastly exceeded my expectations from a few years ago so I am hesitant to bet against his success.

For Aguilar, he really struck me as a "quadruple A" type. He is good enough to be in the bigs, but probably would be in the bottom quarter of regulars if given a chance. I'd be really surprised if he turns into something. For Thames, he did cream the ball in Korea, but I have no idea how to translate performance in Korea to the big leagues.

Definitely could be a quad a guy. He never got a chance to get everyday at bats in Cleveland though so it's tough to really judge him off his big league time so far.

No, but 272/348/454 in 1500 AAA ABs doesn't suggest future starting major league 1st baseman to me.

Shaw doubled twice in four at-bats today.

Chafin pitched one inning yesterday, giving up a solo homerun (WTF?).

Time will tell I suppose. Shaw's AAA numbers were 256/319/395 in 602 AAA at bats and his HR and RBI production was no where near Aguilar's. Ya never know how guys will respond to an opportunity but much like what Shaw did in Boston, Aguilar forced them to give him an opportunity. The one thing Aguilar has consistently done at every level is drive in runs.

Shaw's AAA stats are the biggest reason that I say he has massively exceeded my expectations. I give him credit...I think I put the chance of him becoming a major league regular at 10% and he's done it. Another 2 doubles today.

RE: Kent Baseball Players in the Pros - 2017 Edition
Since it's about the quarter of the way point in the baseball season, it might be a good time to see how the Kent alum are doing.

Travis Shaw - (281/319/548 on the Brewers) He's showing great power (19 EXBH's in 34 games) and playing solid D at third and hitting lefties. His walk-strikeout ratio is scary (7 BBs/29 Ks) though. I think he's overperforming, but he is establishing a solid reputation at third and could be a starter for several years even if he retreats a little bit offensively.

Andrew Chafin (0-0; 2.39 ERA on the Diamondbacks) - He's pitching very well giving up 9 hits and 1 homerun in 12 1/3 innings. He also has struck out 16 batters with only three walks. So, he's back to where he was in 2015, albeit he is in the back of the bullpen at the moment and rarely pitching in situations where the games are on the line. Personally, I'd love to see the Indians get him as a #2 leftie behind Andrew Miller.

Emmanuel Burriss (Washington's AAA club) - Suspended for 50 games for second violation of a drug of abuse.

Brian Clark (White Sox's AAA club) - The leftie started the year on the DL, but has pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings since returning. His minor league stat lines look a lot like Chafin (very good against lefties and righties and keeps the ball in the park) except he is prone to give up the stolen base. What little I've read on him suggests that scouts aren't big fans of his stuff, but if the results are good, he'll get a chance at the bigs. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get called up this year at some point.

Taylor Williams (Brewer's AA club) - After missing two full years due to Tommy John surgery, he's been on a strict pitch limit since coming back, but overall, he's been solid (1.10 ERA in 16 2/3 innings; 9 BBs; 21 Ks). I'll be watching to see if they start to stretch his out pitch count wise during the summer and keeping an eye on the B/K ratio.

John Fasola (Ranger's Minor League System) - He won't get a chance to capitalize off of last year's fine performance because he will miss this year due to Tommy John surgery.

David Lyon (Ranger's AA club) - Listed as on the DL for the Ranger's AA club. More an organizational player than a prospect, but guys like this often end up as pitching coaches.

Eric Lauer (Padre's High-A club) - Very good start at high-A for Lauer. 2.70 ERA in 33 1/3 innings with 12 BB's and 41 K's. A polished college pitcher of Lauer's caliber should be able to handle high-A and his true test will start at AA.

Andy Ravel (Blue Jay's A club) - Hasn't pitched well at all. 6.39 ERA in 25 1/3 innings. 9 BB's and 14 K's. Not a good start at all.

A few others. Tyler Skulina was cut by the Cubs after spring training. He pitched at AA last year, but not well. No word on any opportunities elsewhere. Anthony Gallas will play for the independent league St. Paul Saints. Their season starts this week.

Anyone has anything on others?

RE: Kent Baseball Players in the Pros - 2017 Edition
Midseason Report:

* Travis Shaw continues to rake in Milwaukee despite the personal drama of his newly born daughter having to have open heart surgery almost immediately after her birth. In the last month, he has gotten his walk/strikeout ratio under control (16/20) and no one in the National League has really figured out how to get him out yet. He was listed as a snub for the All-Star game by a cbssports.com article, but there are a ton of really good 3B in the National League. He has really played well.

* Andrew Chafin has moved into close-game reliever role and continues to pitch well, giving up only 1 run in his last 15 appearances. I wonder if the Diamondbacks gave up on him being a starter too soon, but he (along with Archie Bradley) are forming a strong anchor in the D-backs bullpen and resurgence.

* Brian Clark has been solid on the White Sox's AAA team, posting a 2.81 ERA in 25.2 innings. He is giving up too many hits though (that may be luck; a very high 378 BABIP) and hasn't pitched all that well against lefties. I don't know if we'll see him in the bigs this year, but most pitchers at AAA get a shot at some point.

* Emmanuel Burriss served his suspension and is playing for the National's AAA team. He hasn't hit squat this year yet. His versatility probably means he'll get to hang around AAA as long as he wants, but his lack of bat limits a chance to make a big league career. He might get a September call-up because he is a rare MLB player from DC.

* The Brewers continue to treat Taylor Williams very carefully. He didn't pitch for a 20 day period in May/June and has been shaking since returning. He still seems to be very limited in pitch count (hasn't had more than 57 pitches this year). Hard to tell what's going on, but he is on the Brewer's 40 man roster and they are treating him like he is a prospect if he can get healthy, so that's a good sign.

* Eric Lauer was recently promoted to AA and pitched 7 2/3 innings in his debut, giving up no runs and striking out 9 with no walks. He pitched great at high-A, but that was totally expected given his polish as the best developed collegeiate pitcher of his draft year. Now we will learn about his potential to get batters out at the big league level and it was a fabulous start.

* David Lyon is on the 7 day DL for Ranger's AAA club. I can only assume that they are keeping him around as an organizational back-up catcher, but lacks of injuries meant he has had to bide his time this year.

* Anthony Gallas has hit the living heck of out the independent American Association this year., where he is 5th in OBP and 1st in SLG and OPS.

* Tyler Skulina was signed by the Nationals and hasn't pitched all that well in relief for the high-A club. He is walking people like crazy (11 BB's in 12.2 innings).

* Andy Ravel continues to get hit at Toronto's full season low-A club. It does not bode well for his pro future.

* Connor Simonetti played for a week on the National's short season A club before being released. For reasons that aren't incredibly clear to me, he ended up pitching in one game when his team ran out of pitchers in the 11th inning of the second flipping game of the season. He walked 4 in 2/3 of an inning and took the loss. His twitter said "Lasted 2/3 of an inning in my first pro ball outing, still confused." So were we Conner, so were we. Anyway, when he was cut, he tweeted "Just adding to my list of people I have to prove wrong" and we hope he gets the chance.

I'll touch on the recent draftees later.

It looks like the Red Sox' plan for Pablo Sandoval at third base didn't work out. He's being Designated for Assignment.

So now they're looking for a new third baseman.

Yep, the Travis Shaw trade has been a disaster for the Sox.

Travis Shaw ties Thurman Munson for most homers by a KSU player in MLB for a season with 20.

I think the MVP award that Munson won drew the line that all subsequent Flash baseball alum will be measured against.

True, but Shaw now has hit his 21st HR of the year! Congrats! 04-rock

RE: Kent Baseball Players in the Pros - 2017 Edition
Taylor Williams was recalled by the Brewers today. They have been very careful with Williams all year as he recovers from Tommy John surgery at Brewers' AA Club. In the last month, he has pitched 8 innings, giving up 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 BBs and 10 SOs. Over the course of the season, he has done a nice job of keeping the ball in the park (only 2 HRs in 199 PAs), controlling the running game (only 1 SB in 4 attempts) and striking out lots of players (57 K's in 46.2 innings). The two negatives that stick out are too many walks (though that may be due to missing two years from injury) and he got hit pretty good by lefties.

He'll get a real looksee in the bigs to show what he has. It's hard to determine his future because he has more unknowns than most at his age, but I do see potential as a good major league reliever.
