CAA tourney format changing, new TV deal
It was announced today that the CAA tournament will now be held on a Saturday-Tuesday format for the next four seasons, until 2021.
CBS Sports Network will carry the semifinals and finals of the tourney each season, much like what NBCSN did for four seasons.
Here is the new format for 2018 at North Charleston Coliseum:
Saturday 3/3: Two first round games (8/9 and 7/10)
Sunday 3/4: Four quarterfinals (likely same format as Saturday was before)
Monday 3/5: Semifinals (both games in primetime on CBSSN)
Tuesday 3/6: Finals (CBSSN)

WTF. That is awful. Whoever made this decision deserves a lot of angry mail and is likely to get it from across the CAA.

RE: CAA tourney format changing, new TV deal
Really awful! 100% money driven! Trying to have the crap games on a weekend to draw more. Now fans of winning teams essentially have to take 3 days off to catch the semis and the ship. JUST HORRIBLE

RE: CAA tourney format changing, new TV deal
After the contract with Charleston ends they should just forget about this neutral site business and let the highest seed host the semis and finals like the horizon league. This new format is going to hammer attendance

It argues for a move to a more central location, unless Charleston and UNCW are atop the standings and make long runs in the tournament.

Agree. The CAA doesn't have the name recognition in terms of schools or conference to attract a lot of average, unaffiliated fans. This also makes winning the regular season a huge deal with a great payoff for doing so beyond an NIT guarantee.

The only issue is what is a Drexel, or a NE or Elon(before new building) wins the reg season? They don't have the arenas to support a conf tourney.

Northeastern doesn't? Really? Matthews holds more than 5,000 for hoops. Michigan State had no issues playing there, so I'm sure the tourney could too.
But I still think neutral sites are still the way to go.

My apologies, I thought it had less seating than that.

RE: CAA tourney format changing, new TV deal
I think the early rounds should be on home teams' floors and just do a Saturday/Sunday semi and finals at the neutral location. This announcement is a bad direction for the conference in my opinion. Also not good that there was no mention of a deal with ESPN to get on ESPN3 for regular season games.

Nothing says crappy conference more than playing conference tournament games on home courts

Agreed.
I'm fine with the CAA Tournament moving every 3 years or so, to appease different parts of the conference. Scrapping the system of neutral court makes no sense.

I'm ok with that too. That said, the day shifts are ridiculous

I disagree
Nothing says crappy conference like 1000 people or less in a 14K seat arena, which is what may happen.

RE: CAA tourney format changing, new TV deal
That is why our conference should have semi finals on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. Both should be at the same neutral location. Thursday and Friday games can be played at the higher seeds home courts. Cuts travel costs for teams and fans, potentially, but still keep the important part of the tournament at a neutral place on the weekend when you will have the best ability to travel

I have to say that this a great idea, and is an idea which is most likely to draw the highest overall tourney attendance.

RE: CAA tourney format changing, new TV deal
That is what the Horizon does, except the #1 seeds gets to host the semis and finals. I think the CAA should look at that idea especially if they are going to be playing their major games on off nights, like the Horizon.
