RE: What are your schools realignment options?
MiamiU's conference realignment options:
(1) Most preferred: stay in an improved MAC
(2) Second most preferred: stay in the MAC at the status quo
(3) Third most preferred would likely be stay in the MAC after it has taken a hit or two in conference realignment.

But what about realignment options for your school? I will start with mine. [NB. Kit Kat went to OhioU]

1)B12: Our academic peer list includes Oklahoma St, Iowa St and WVU so this would be the conference to join with its rural college towns. We make a perfect travel partner with WVU only 2 hours away.

Also require pigs to fly. Maybe ought to have mentioned that requirement.

Quote: 2) AAC: We're the logical replacement school for Cincinnati if they were to leave. ... But unless the AAC can grow its base revenue distribution from 3.5 million to at least 10 million per school it's not going to be enough to offset the increased travel cost and higher salaries required to compete in the AAC.
I'm wondering what revenue in the MAC would be required for the Bobcats to build up to the level of an occasional conference champion in MAC FB? And then the increment above that required to chase the level of occasional AAC conference champion?

Quote: 3)CUSA: Marshall has pushed for us to join and we've had what amounts to a standing invite for years. We have a basketball profile and budget that exceeds everyone in the MAC, SBC or any FCS school they would consider. If CUSA basketball starts to take off with WKU, ODU and UAB returning to form it becomes more attractive.

But so long as the MAC is stable and has a TV deal we wouldn't look at this. Buffalo could leave and it would have zero impact on the deal. If NIU and Toledo were to leave and the deal is close to renewal it might. Also we'd demand (because we can) Miami University to be added as a package deal to make it worthwhile. I think CUSA would agree to that demand.
You can demand it? "Because you could" meaning because you could get it if you made the demand? Maybe you could make the ask, but it seems likely that the Redhawks would have a say in it, and I don't see that MiamiU would have any interest in going to CUSA.

Sure why not...

AAC

We need a new arena and to complete moving Olympic sports back on campus.

That's about it.

RE: What are your schools realignment options?
Alabama:

1) stay in the SEC
2) go independent in football. Other sports would suffer a little but in a conference like the OVC, SoCon, or Atlantic Sun, but basketball would probably be more competitive
3) join the ACC - probably would mean ESPN has lost the SEC. I don't think Alabama would jump without Tennessee. If Norte Dame is also joining as a full member, I could see Florida or Kentucky joining as #18.

I don't see the B1G as an option due to lack research status (medical school is in Birmingham, aerospace engineering is in Huntsville). The Pac 12 is not an option due to geography.

Kentucky:

1) stay in the SEC
2) join the B1G - research still needs to pick up a bit, but UK has a stated goal of becoming a Top 20 research institution by 2020. Landing anywhere close to that would make it easier to land a spot in the AAU. This would be a new state for the Big Ten Network, and fans would love to see the rivalry with Indiana renewed.
3) join the ACC - this was under consideration back in the late eighties or early nineties. It might not seem to make sense with Louisville in the league now, but UK fans would be excited about North Carolina and Duke making regular visits to Rupp Arena. If Norte Dame were joining as a full member, having a home game against Norte Dame every six years would be a huge pickup for the football program.

I don't see football independence being an option unless if several others take the plunge from the SEC or B1G.

South Alabama

1) join C-USA - if the money can work, this is the next logical step. This reunites USA with UAB and WKU and ODU, the historic core of the Sun Belt, and finally puts them in a conference with Southern Miss.
2) join the American - apparently USA talked with what was then the Big East, but not much came from it. USA could serve as a travel partner for Tulane, and would likely bring the Dollar General Bowl. Football and basketball attendance need to improve to AAC levels.
3) drop football - I could see this happening after a prolonged period of losing and mediocre attendance, but only if funding for an on campus stadium completely evaporated. We could probably stay in the Sun Belt due to being a charter member, but might move to the Atlantic Sun.

I don't see a P5 - mainly a Big 12 - invitation likely due to the immaturity of the football program. The ACC could theoretically be interested since USA does have a significant research component, but the ACC would likely trade NC State to the SEC for Auburn before inviting UAB or USA.

RE: What are your schools realignment options?
Here are a few schools that I think could make a P5 conference if they invested a lot of money.

Underdogs that could make P5:
Buffalo: AAU school in New York. Need new football and basketball arena. All need to start hockey up. If they could build a nice 50000 person on campus stadium and get attendance up they have an outside shot at joining Big Ten.

Rice: Another AAU school. Need to improve basketball similar to what SMu did. Have a shot at Big 12 and PAC 12

UAB: The City of Birmingham is growing like crazy. If UAB could rebrand as Birmingham (similar to Charlotte). Have the city build a nice 50000 person stadium for the blazers and the Birmingham bowl they would be set. On top of that build a new basketball arena. The basketball culture is there just need to get football going. They could have an outside shot to the ACC if schools like Clemson, GA Tech, and FSU start complaining about northern growth and no new southern teams being added.

UNLV: New football stadium and a martlet that fits perfectly for the PAC-12.

Lol, the OP wrote this extremely long essay and not once bothered to say what school he was writing about.

Whoever it is, they made a quick mistake in the B12 section, lumping Iowa State with OkSt and WVU academicaly. Iowa State is an AAU member and compares more closely with Mizzou than OkST and WVU.
Ohio.

CSNbbs mobile app

Poor Ohio.

You let Ohio State steal your flagship status in your state.

Cut it out. Kittonhead asked a legitimate question, so please give him a legitimate answer.

I will do my alma mater (University of Montevallo), and another school I attended (Troy University).

For Montevallo, it depends on where the Falcons want to go. Stay at D2 or upgrade to D1. Montevallo had looked at joining at D1 in the past, but when our rival Birmingham-Southern decided to downgrade from D1(a big mistake, IMO, but they wanted football, so I can sorta see it), it seemed like Montevallo decided to abandon it. Montevallo decided to leave the Gulf South Conference for the Peach Belt Conference because our president thought it was a better institutional & athletic fit at the time. However, one big problem with PBC was that Montevallo had no legitimate rivalries with any PBC members. When another longtime rival, AUM (Auburn-Montgomery) decided to upgrade from NAIA to the Gulf South Conference, Montevallo decided to see if GSC would take them back and fortunately, they did. Since rival UNA (aka North Alabama) is upgrading to the Big South Conference and the A-Sun Conference, I can see Montevallo watching this move with interest. If UNA is successful and stays D1, Montevallo may contemplate going D1 yet again. Other options include going back to the Peach Belt, which really makes no sense, considering that Montevallo still has no legitimate rivals over there or just staying in the GSC.

For Troy, C-USA would be an option if they would give the Trojans an invitation, but because of Troy's very small market, one doesn't seem to be forthcoming, unless C-USA decides to abandon their markets strategy.

I thought California was already like that.

As for schools that I'm actually a fan of, but didn't attend, here's how I see them:

UGa (Georgia)

1. Stay in the SEC. Many of the Bulldogs rivals are in the SEC, and the Bulldogs are pretty content there.
2. Go Indy: An interesting option for Georgia. I'm sure Auburn would schedule us OOC, as would GT, but I'm not sure about Florida as the Gators constantly complain about how hard their conference schedule is, and having to play FSU on top of that, so the Georgia-Florida game could end theoretically if UGa ever left the SEC. I can see Clemson renewing their old rivalry with us though. Some sports would suffer, but we would definitely be more competitive in the CAA, SoCon, etc. for men's basketball. Could be a big step down for the ladies though because they've been outperforming the men. I'm sure Notre Dame would definitely offer us several games if we did go indy, so they'd probably replace UF as a rival eventually.
3. ACC: Clemson would move heaven & earth for this to happen. I can see Georgia Tech being initially opposed to this, but they might eventually warm up to it. The Dawgs already pitiful men's basketball would probably be in the basement with BC most of the time, but women's basketball would thrive.

Oregon
1. Stay in Pac 12: most likely.
2. Go indy: I can see the Beavers, the Cougars, the Buffaloes, and maybe the Huskies continuing to play the Ducks OOC, but we could probably kiss games like USC, UCLA, and Stanford goodbye.

University of Minnesota

Staying put in the B1G.

Bemidji State

There have been rumors that the Minnesota membership of the NSIC would split into their own conference, so this is a definite possibility.

St. Thomas

Staying put in the MIAC, unless the NSIC splits and the new conference convinces the Tommies to move up.

We've been in talks on and off for 5 years.

In 2012 we won the Independence Bowl and lost in the Sweet 16 to North Carolina in overtime. That was right as the Big East/AAC was facing their membership crisis. The AAC is primarily interested in our basketball (13,000 seat arena).

Last year when the AAC was looking at a potential raid they met with Ohio's BOD. The response from the Ohio's side was "we want to see how the TV deal goes first". We have a good travel situation in the MAC and don't want to give that up unless its going to make a huge difference.

I'm sure the AAC has had these conversations with BODs of other schools (SoMiss, WKU come to mind) so there isn't really anything special about this.

Idaho State: unless the totally incompetent president and AD pull their heads out ISU someday could get booted. With decent people running the show, they can be very competitive in Big Sky, as proven by winning FCS title and turning out the best hoops team in conference history.

Utah State: I never went there but live in Logan. They are very happy and content in MWC.

RE: What are your schools realignment options?
The only way OU gets an AAC invite is if it gets poached of four or so members, in which case they'd be joining the C-USA from about a decade ago. Anything more is a folly; at the end of the day they're a school who's record attendance is like 25k.

Miami is in a similar position. The C-USA reached out to us and Toledo shortly after Big Ben played and if we went there we'd have a theoretical chance of moving up to the Big East and later the AAC, but no matter what our old AD was gonna tank our athletic program and our chances of advancing. If our program was at its historical peaks (Top 25 and 26k attendance average in football, regular MAC winner and 6k attendance average in basketball, solid Olympic sports) however, we'd probably be on the AAC's short list.

We would get an invite to the AAC if Cincinnati left the AAC and the AAC was left with an odd number of members. But we're not accepting it unless the AAC improves its TV deal.

Our record attendance is 25.9k set against New Mexico State however we've been averaging 23-24k for Saturday home football games for years now. Midweek games pull our average down to 21k. Some of the better support numbers that you'll find outside of the AAC. Regardless the primary interest here is for our basketball and all our football has to be is decent (hasn't had a losing season since 2008).

For the B12 that would require expanding to 32,000 for it, however that is quite doable and our program could handle that capacity. For the AAC our present capacity is fine. Again B12 would require UC to move to the AAC for some reason and the B12 being desperate for teams but it's a theoretical target for us.

I didn't know Ohio had received an offer.

Very interesting. Can you link me to where you learned this?

RE: What are your schools realignment options?
Marquette - In an optimal conference affiliation with like-minded institutions and athletic programs. While they would probably like to see an addition with Saint Louis at some point down the road, they are, otherwise, currently set.

Georgetown - I'd say that the Big East is probably their optimal conference affiliation, but would likely entertain the ACC (with Duke, Boston College, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, etc.) if the money and agreement was right. With the ACC without a presence in Maryland, Georgetown (D.C.) would be a nice compliment with Notre Dame (getting to 16 basketball schools). However, since the money will likely never be worth it and with the school once again taking a backseat to football, I'd say there is a very small chance that Georgetown ever goes to the ACC - unless of course there's a unique situation where the Old Big East 5 (Nova, G'town, St. Johns, Seton Hall and Providence) would some how get into the ACC due to football raids, thus creating a need for the hybrid again to keep the contract up.

Notre Dame - Perfect set-up right now. They are free from football conference affiliation, which it desires, and are still able to park Olympics in a conference where it shares history and rivalries with so many members. With their scheduling arrangement in football, they are still able to play USC, Stanford and Navy yearly, without restriction. The only way this arrangement could possibly be improved upon was if there was someway to challenge for a spot in the ACC Championship game but still keeping its five-game scheduling agreement.

The best thing about Miami is the academics. Miami has an operating budget larger than BGSU and EMU's combined. If sh!t hit the fan that would keep them ahead of those two in the pecking order.

Primarily though if you don't have Top 25 football the next thing they look at for expansion is the level of basketball. That is why Western Kentucky has emerged as a serious candidate for the AAC. Western Kentucky in it's history has only had a few crowds above 20,000 in football but I guess that doesn't matter.

Miami's investment in football facilities will help it stand out some in the realignment carousel too.

tOSU
- any future super conference with Michigan. In the meantime we'll just have to live with the B1G and a shot at the National title every 4 or 5 years on average

SJSU
- ideally a split in the CSU System to allow SJSU to become a true "Taco Tech" (that will cause a great infusion of money)
- hope the MWC holds together. It's the right conference for us
