CSUB banned by state from traveling to UTRGV?
There is a new ban by California on travel by state agencies, public schools, and commissions to certain states because of new discrimination laws. This includes athletic teams for games and post season play. One of those states is Texas, which would then mean Bakersfield isnt allowed to play UTRGV in the state of Texas. Cal Baptist, being private, isnt affected

"The California law allows for exceptions for contracts that are already in place"

Would that include conference membership?

Maybe Bakersfield-UTRGV basketball games can be played in Mexico or something for an international thing. All the other sports, idk. For womens basketball and other sports they play H/H each year with, when UTRGV comes to Bakersfield, play both games on back to back days or something

I don't see why UTRGV would go out of their way to accommodate Bako. This would be awesome to see what would happen if Texas ever joined the PAC, or if Arizona or Utah ever passed bills that didn't meet California's holier than thou attitude. Would cal and ucla be up a creek?

As a side note, I'm pretty sure a university could win this if they ever went to court over it. It seems like such a ridiculous law.

Yeah, in all likelihood, Bakersfield will probably get a waiver for games at UTRGV with no issue. But as the only public California school with this issue, it is unique to the WAC. UCLA for instance has been preparing for this since February with their scheduling and im sure the WAC, both schools, and whomever it concerns in the state government talked about it a few months ago and have a plan

It says in the bill that current contracts are exempt

Right but would they count conference membership as the same thing? One trip by Cal to play Auburn (Alabama is on the travel ban list) in 2024 is one thing but depending on how serious they are, yearly trips by multiple athletic teams might be viewed different.

Being that it's just one California school with only one school that conflicts with the new law though, it probably wont be an issue

If California raise issue with CSUB playing at UTRGV, the WAC needs to say that all conference games that CSUB misses will count as a forfeit. Also that the WAC would no longer allow CSUB to host Conference Tournaments.

This was brought up on twitter: How might this affect CSUB travel to Las Cruces? Long drive from an airport not in Texas...

I'm willing to bet all athletic teams will be getting a waiver. No need a make a big deal out of something that is almost certainly nothing.

Kind of like GCU to Horizon?

Not really at all comparable. There was actual evidence of GCU's interest in the Horizon at that exact time. Can only go off of what is available at the present time.

I don't think this law will pass constitutional muster.

For one thing this opens up the entire nation to a series of bans and counter bans of states for all myriad of issues they don't agree with each other. Such idiocy not even slavery led to such travel bans.

Just nuts

Well any contract that was signed before 1/2017 will be honored by public schools in the state, so since CSUB has been in the WAC for a while, it may not affect the UTRGV game. It likely means that won't be adding anyone in the 8 states.

I wonder if the WAC bylaws (membership contract) supersedes a State mandate like this? Next season, Cal Baptist joins the WAC. I wonder if they receive any state funds or if they are totally privately funded?

Because it is California, I am going to say that they receive zero public funds from the state to support the university.
