RE: Horizon has offered an unnamed school... GCU?
Stu, GCU is not going to the Horizon. What a crock! It makes no sense. Not financially or geographically. GCU is a university and a public stock. They have shareholders to answer to. Why go from playing in the Southwest to playing in the Midwest? To a league that just lost their best team? To a league that is no better than the WAC? So instead of playing the conference baseball tournament in Mesa, they are going to travel to Chicago? So instead of the conference basketball tournament in Las Vegas, they are going to travel to Detroit? You would think a shareholder would be questioning the wisdom of a move to the Horizon. It is not the Big East or even the MVC!

This invite has Fort Wayne written all over it. Their location makes it a bus trip for everyone and the Horizon is a bus trip league. Fort Wayne will bring baseball and keep them in Indiana. I think it is the Summit League that needs to worry...

UVU was never in the Summit. I think SUU was in the Mid-Con, but UVU was only in the Great West and WAC.

One other thought to consider. There had been talk of University of Southern Indiana. Not sure if I think it is them, but there was talk of that.

I also think it means there is some traction of UC San Diego teaming with CSU Bakersfield to get in the Big West together. The money and powers behind GCU would not be moving them if they thought that was headed nowhere.

What must the folks at Cal Baptist be thinking now?

I love how you assume Bakersfield is BW bound when nobody really wants them. Now if they bring NMSU or even Seattle with them, Bakersfield becomes lovable.

The Valley will expand more in the future, there's no doubt to that and they were already looking at about 3 more Horizon league teams to add. It's about as stable as the WAC. I think the problem is GCU thinking they are bigger than they are. GCU hasn't even been eligible to play in the tournament yet and they already want to bail, to the midwest no less. I get they are loaded with money but it's certainly not a good look.

They're now eligible for the tournament going forward. They just completed the transition period.

Chicago State will likely head to the Chicagoland (NAIA/D-II) where I think they are headed anyway. Cal Baptist may get buyers remorse and u-turn to remain in D-II, especially is NMSU and CSUB are successful.

I don't see any current options for SU, UVU, UTRGV or even UMKC.

By adding GCU the Horizon becomes a lot more stable. Had they added one of the other schools UIC and Milwaukee would be working on exit plans, possibly another school. But this add makes the highest value schools much happier with the conference. It means a higher caliber school can be targeted next round. Your flight risk is rarely the bottom schools, but your highest value. GCU add was aimed at placating those schools.

Look we don't know if NMSU can still get into the Horizon. They might be stuck in the WAC, their chance having passed already. CSUB may have the best opportunity to exit next.

But things are likely to shake up more. The Horizon eventual plan is 16 schools. That could hit several conferences including the Summit (Denver, or NDSU and SDSU as a pair), OVC (Murray State, even Belmont), SLC (SF Austin), Big South (Liberty) or WAC (NMSU). This is bound to shake open some slots.

Sleepless nights ahead.

How many times do I have to say it, GCU isn't getting into the Horizon League without New Mexico State as a travel partner. Horizon League has contacted NMSU. They wanted NMSU/GCU as a package deal. GCU at the time had no interest in joining the Horizon. I'm sure they still have no interest if they didn't have interest in joining last year.

Yep. FinalFour nailed it. Last summer NMSU engaged the Horizon League. If it's considering Grand Canyon now, NMSU is back in the picture. Their basketball tradition and GCU's new money make them really tempting, even to a midwest league.

The Summit is the Mid-Con. It just changed names

If Grand Canyon leaves the WAC will implode on itself and the Big West doesn't want us. So yeah more than a little to be worried about. Not everything is about GCU.

It seems like this whole thread was based on the original twitter post and now the same guy is saying now he doesn't believe it. I'm calling BS on GCU moving to the Horizon.

It was never happening. Many lose their mind when some no name Twitter takester makes an unfounded claim. Most GCU fans want to stay in the WAC. The Horizon would be awful.

"No name" The guy works for detroitnews.com and has 10k twitter followers. Not unfounded at all. Mid-Major Madness is also reporting the same thing.

"Sources at Grand Canyon tell us that there have at least been conversations between the university and the Horizon League, but would not say if there was any formal invitation extended. So this could mean just about anything. The most likely scenario: Grand Canyon, as well as a bunch of other schools, was vetted for potential membership. We are trying to find it went any further than that, but cannot report anything else at this time."

You may feel the Horizon would be awful as do I but the administration obviously doesn't believe that. They will probably be adding IPFW now but it seems likely NMSU and GCU will go to the Horizon next year. For some reason this is the direction the Horizon wants to head for God knows what reason.

Now IUPUI

Wow kind of surprising considering they don't have a baseball team. This also makes it seem almost certain the Horizon will be adding NMSU and GCU next year.
