SWAC drops Conference Championship Game ...
... After this coming season. The SWAC has had a CCG since 1999, but wants to focus on the Celebration Bowl game vs the MEAC champion, although they don't currently conflict:

"Under the current format, the winner of the SWAC championship game represented the conference in the Celebration Bowl, which is used to determine a Black College Football National Champion. Grambling won the Celebration Bowl last season after defeating Alcorn State in the SWAC championship game.

Beginning in 2018, the SWAC representative will be determined by the team with the best regular season record.

The 2017 season also marks the first year of a new SWAC scheduling format. Previously, each of the 10 teams in the league played each other in the regular season, allowing for definite head-to-head tiebreakers.

Under the new schedule, SWAC teams will play seven conference games instead of nine, meaning its possible the SWAC champion could not be decided by head-to-head records in the event of a tie.

The news release issued Tuesday stated the conference will "work to solidify a tie-breaker procedure, scheduling and other factors that contribute to dissolving the championship format."

Do you suppose the purpose of this is to enable members to schedule more "buy" games (or, in their case, "sell" games) in the future? For them, that's where the money is.

And the potential for more Classics with MEAC/SIAC/CIAA/other HBCU schools.

Doesn't the SWAC and MEAC partake in the FCS playoffs?

The champions don't. An at-large team sometimes represents them though. Last year, NC A&T made the playoffs.

MVSU has just signed away pay games against both UND and NDSU for around $250 k. Guess that's better than having nine conference games.

RE: SWAC drops Conference Championship Game ...
With the SWAC not being a participant in the FCS playoffs but still having the Celebration Bowl as an end of the season money maker it's going to be far easier for the SWAC teams to schedule two rent a victim games against the FBS.

It sure looks that way. I don't see any obvious/rational reason to do away with the CCG and cut the conference schedule from 9 to 7 games, other than to free schools up for paydays as cannon fodder for FBS schools.

Really surprised with 7 games, you think 8 makes more sense. Have to agree it appears to be for the want of payday games.

7 makes more sense

it is easier to work the schedule for the conference as a whole because you can have two divisions of five, you play the other 4 in your division plus one fixed cross division rival and then the other 4 in the other division in pairs every to years

plus you end up feeding less on your own conference for wins (and guaranteed losses as well) with fewer conference games

fans at EVERY LEVEL want to see winning teams play winning teams they do not care about two "conference teams going head to head" WITH 2-5 RECORDS that crap does not sell

now with more pay to lose games mixed in that can hurt your record overall, but at least one of you is going to lose guaranteed in a conference game and hand a loss to the conference overall might as well take the risk with two OOC games and get paid and perhaps one of you can still win

the Big 12 would be wise to learn from this and move to 7 conference games as well, but keep the CCG......it would be the best move the Big 12 would ever make

This is not allowed/workable for B12, the only reason a Conference under 12 can have a CCG is if they play round robin(9games) or they split into 5 or less team divisions(which B12 does not want to do because the way U's vs States U's or Texas schools would be split).

it is most certainly allowed for the Big 12

as you stated they can split into divisions of five and play a divisional round robin and place the winners of each division into the CCG

so it is 100% allowed the fact that the Big 12 is not smart enough to see the logic and do it does not mean it is "not allowed" it just means the Big 12 is not smart enough to do it

This won't happen, so please don't get too upset, but ...

... I think the SWAC and MEAC should drop down to DII, while any teams that want to be serious about spending to be competitive in DI transfer to other conferences. Tenn St is in the OVC, for example.

RE: SWAC drops Conference Championship Game ...
You could probably gather 10-14 schools between both conferences to remain Division I, then have the downgrading conference invite some other schools - like a C-USA or Southland split - before all of the HBCUs pull the plug on Division I. The entry fees from the incoming Division I schools could be used to offset the loss of NCAA Tournament monies for the downgrading schools.

The obvious locks for the "SEAC" by enrollment:

Prairie View A&M
Texas Southern
Southern University
Jackson State
Florida A&M
North Carolina A&T
North Carolina Central
Howard

FAMU and Howard would need travel partners so I would probably include Hampton and Bethune-Cookman, both of which are private.

The SIAC and CIAA would probably want to talk to the MEAC and SWAC downgraders.

There's two schools with plans on leaving the SWAC so the conference will be down to 8 teams.

No. More flexibility in scheduling for more home games not payday games.

No question that Alabama St's football stadium is nice. And I'm sure you have some games there every year that draw well.

... but is there anything else about Alabama State's athletic dept that is solidly DI, beyond that? How much does the dept spend each year on ASU athletics? How much do you pay your head football coach? How much revenue do you take in per year? ETC

Us and Alabama A&M leaving is a STRONG possibility. I'm not sure how serious A&M is about leaving though.

We've won the last 4 Conference Commissioner Cups in the conference and we have the highest athletic budget in the conference.
