RE: Offseason baseball thread
Why would you think that ? We have one of the poorest athletic departments in D-1. And I doubt outbidding someone for an assistant baseball coach is a top priority. I would love to get Ostrander too. He's a great coach and recruiter. But I think he turned down Bama last year. Doubt we could give him enough of a raise to change his mind.

But Tech's is one of the few that consistently trails ours as far as that goes.

I was about to say. And Berry makes quite a bit more than Burroughs. Almost double, I think. Would think our assistant pay is better too.

Also kinda surprised braley isn't on that list. Must have been 20 scouts in Biloxi watching him.

Would love to see our Juniors stay. Could be a big year next year if they do.
We'll see what happens. If I'm honest, hope Fed takes the job. We can find a pitching coach at a small school that is doing phenomenal to come here and get us where we want to be. Pitching hasn't been our strong suit in a long time and Fed certainly hasn't helped develop pitchers.

Not sure I agree with that.
We typically have a solid rotation and what usually screws us every year is a late-season power outage at the plate. Very little to do with Federico.
This year was an exception to that, obviously. Couldn't really count on any of starting pitchers to provide a quality start toward the end of the season. Unfortunately we've been lacking in recruiting pitchers with good stuff the past few years and it came back to haunt us at the worst times. Perhaps he is to shoulder some blame for that.

Braley and McCarty were both very solid down the stretch. Lack of depth in the bullpen killed us.
Draft starts today. Rounds 1-2 tonight, 3-10 Tuesday, 11-40 Wednesday.

?
Starting pitching was awful down the stretch.
Braley was solid. That was it, though.
Colt Smith

CUSA Tournament Championship Game
3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER

Both ERAs around 9.
McCarty did have a good start against Tech in the conference tourney. Got shelled in both regional games, though.

Did very well in the last few regular season starts is what I'm referring to. But he was certainly roughed up by UIC. Tough for me to rag on him for his State performance however. Threw 90 pitches just two days earlier.

Not having Wallner healthy enough to pitch for a good part of the season may have kept us from being a national seed, and advancing to a Super Regional.

NO, not being able to field routine fly balls and a couple other key errors helped keep us out of a super regional.

The balk
The subsequent three run homer.
The failure to score with the bases loaded and no outs in the following half.
TTT wasn't about to be caged following that sequence.

Hard for me to say a true freshman who had thrown 13 innings his entire career and got shelled by a bad team his last time out before his injury would have been that much of a gamechanger for us.

Our pitching almost always lacks depth, even with a good rotation.
Last year's staff wasn't as good as this year's statistically, but it had a lot more quality depth and was much better suited for the postseason.
This team would have been in real trouble with starting pitching if Braley had not wildly outperformed preseason expectations. If you had told me that he would end the season as our #2...and pitching better than McCarty down the stretch, I would have guessed we barely made the conference tournament.

RE: Offseason baseball thread
Reading through the MLB draft chat on D1. Looks like an Eagle fan got a question in earlier today. This is what their draft guru thinks re: McCarty/Braley (very detailed answer, I know).
Q. Where do you see Taylor Braley and Kirk Mccarty going from Southern Miss?
A. McCarty I could see around the 5th. Braley 6th-8th.

RE: Offseason baseball thread
Wallner wasn't just any Freshman. Before he got hurt he was sitting 92-95 with a good hard slider. And he's 6'5 so the 95 looks a lot like 97 to the hitter. Not many college hitters are gonna sniff that. First half of the season nobody was hitting him. After his injury he was more like 90-92 and the breaking ball was very average. Still nothing to sneeze at, but pretty pedestrain. If he's right next year and comes back to his early season form, he's a dynamic shutdown reliever. Losing him on the mound was huge.
