I think we see both simultaneously as an expansion duo. Seattle SuperSonics and Seattle Kraken (I heard that name somewhere and thought it was hilariously good.) Sonics using their old color scheme while the Kraken could easily embrace the green/blue theme of the Seattle.
I can see either Arizona, Carolina, or Florida losing their NHL team to Quebec. Quebec should have a team, in my opinion and all three of those franchises seem to be struggling. I'd hate for Carolina to lose theirs because my first NHL game was in Raleigh.
I also think having more conferences would not be a bad idea. Treat them more like divisions (but call them conferences because of their size). Top 16 teams, seeded 1-16 make the playoffs. The only guaranteed seed is the conference champion.
Let's say, for arguments sake that Florida loses theirs:
West: Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Jose, Seattle, Las Vegas, Arizona, Colorado, Dallas
Central: Pittsburgh, Columbus, Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, Tampa Bay
East: Carolina, Washington, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York ®, New York (I), Boston
Canada: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec
