Riley, at 33, is the youngest FBS HC.

Stoops just 57. I wonder if he just needs a break like Urban Meyer did a few years back, but then re-surfaces somewhere else in a year.

Just 33 years old and he gets the nod to be promoted to head coach of Oklahoma.

Talk about a dream come true...

I'm not surprised at all it was either resign now or get fired Sept 3rd.

Yep, that's what I thought. He did not want to risk being fired if he lost to UTEP in the opener. Yeah, let's say that's what it was.

If Riley turns out to be a good coach, OU will be set for a long time. If he doesn't work out, he could set the program back probably not to Iowa St. levels but certainly to a level that will take a few years to rebuild. I would say his biggest challenge will be getting top assistants that are 10years or more older than him join his staff.

Stoops was no longer a championship coach. He could win the big 12, but national titles was a different story. With that said, I doubt Riley will be better than him.

This was well coordinated. Stoops gets his last head line and the coach in waiting gets a full offseason without having to recruit immediately.

Come on guys, something more to this story...My guess Stoops will be coaching Notre Dame or UT this time next season....He is only 56, for reference Nick Saban was hired at Bama at age 56...

you don't leave Oklahoma for Notre Dame or UT.....yes Notre Dame has history....but Oklahoma has history that is just as impressive. Leaving Oklahoma for UT? Uhhhhh one word. NO.
Stoops' dad died coaching in his 50's, of a heart attack.
I'm sure that played a role in his decision to retire. Now he can watch his high school aged sons play high school football.

I think we see him on camera sonewhere, even if just in guest appearances.

It would be a natural for FOX to have him as part of the UTEP @ OU game on 9/2.

Stoops yearly has done less with excellent talent than anyone I know. I'm sure the posse at Oklahoma was set to attack.

Well, Stoops knew how to win a Sugar Bowl. His 11th ranked Sooners beat Nick Saban's #3 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in 2014 for an easy 45-31 win. That was a very impressive performance. His team also beat Auburn this past January, 35-19.
