I thought this was going to be a 4+4 type of tournament where the lower seeded teams play two games on the road vs. the higher seeded teams. But it looks like it is a true 8-team tournament, with each team playing 3 games at the neutral site. Here is the field along with last year's RPI rankings:

Cincinnati - 12
Richmond - 80
Iowa - 81
UL Lafayette - 115
Buffalo - 146
Wyoming - 151
South Dakota State - 155
UAB - 200

I'm kind of bummed there are no other sure-fire tournament teams in the field, but at least we don't have to play any terrible buy games. Additionally, playing a 3-game tournament has opened us up for the Never Forget Tribute Classic in New Jersey vs. Florida. So if we can get 2 top-150 games and a top 100 game out of this Cayman Islands thing, plus Florida, UCLA, Xavier, and Mississippi State, our non-conference schedule is shaping up very nicely.
Woof. You guys need to get on the Top Tier MTE cycle.

If we could, I'm sure we would. For some reason, it seems like Maui and Battle 4 Atlantis want nothing to do with us. Last year we played in a tournament where we would have played Duke if we had gotten past Rhode Island. I'm not worried about it this coming season since Florida, UCLA, and Xavier should all be top 25 teams.

The last few years Memphis has done the Old Spice Classic, the Emerald Coast Classic, and will do the Gotham Classic this season (Louisville, Memphis, Albany, and Siena will take part in that event)

Yep. The only thing "strong" about ECU's schedule will be the stench.

Mick Had mentioned that the year they were in the Maui, they were a fill in for another team and thus were added super late to the touranment. UC was able to get packages set up for fans and even much advertising, so UC attendance was poor.

He said that affected them and now they haven't been invited back since.

We hosted UNC last year.

Did UNC have someone from New Orleans on the team?

Which is incredibly lame because UC made the Maui finals and had a great championship game against Gonzaga over there. If UC is as good this year as I expect them to be, I think the big time invites will start coming more frequently.

They had an RPI of 33 3 years ago. Hopefully it won't be over 300 this coming year.

I'd rather play USM (or any C-USA team) than all these HBCU's we've been facing.

that comes across as very, well, you know...I'd rather ECU have a good hoops program over scheduling down.

I know Tubby is old friends with Rick Barnes so I'm about 99% sure UT will be back on the schedule soon. (probably 2018-19...we play @LSU that season so I'd love to get UT at FeExForum)

my opinion on SEC hoops games is simple. Wanna play us in hoops? offer us a home-home football contract.

Mizzou and Miss State have agreed to home-home football series with Memphis...we should offer them a home-home hoops series. JMHO

Since we are starting a basketball series with Mississippi State, I wonder if our AD brought up the possibility of a home-and-home football series.

This. Same with Tennessee. They still owe us a home football game from 2004.

UTK does owe us a game. UA should owe us a game since they cancelled the last game of the series after we won 3 in a row but technically they don't, they paid the contractual fee instead of playing. But that's FB.

In MBB, no, Memphis has been on a several year slide related to OOC, especially at home. It's weak. No other way to describe it. Hoping for better & I express this to the admin, every chance I get. Maybe the UA negotiations to play H&H is part of improving the home OOC. Should have added, I think Miss St, UTK & Vandy are being discussed. I can only hope.

I'm so excited for next year. Xavier, UCLA, and Florida should all be really big games. Mississippi State and the Cayman Islands will be good as well. Then you throw in 18 games against an improved AAC with the addition of Wichita State... in terms of schedule strength, it may rival some of the Big East years. By math, we will easily have double digit games against top 50 RPI teams... maybe as many as 15 if things break right.

some Memphis fans just aren't obsessed with playing SEC teams.

I support only playing SEC teams that offer home-home football contracts.
