ESPN Lists WSU's Landry Shamet As The #15 Player in D1
You won't like who's #1. Shamet is the only player in The American to make the top 25 list.

Landry Shamet won't be the best player in the American.

Not even the best guard.

You're probably right. He's getting overrated by the fact that he dropped 20 against UK's guard tandem that are both expected to be top-10 lottery picks. That and his top 15 or so A/TO ratio in D1 (as a Fr) is only adding to the hype.

Please pass along your observation that Shamet is overrated to your team's coach.

So tired of WSU fans only being able to talk about their game against Kentucky last year. I guess that is a tribute to how bad the MVC is?

But can he post those numbers on a cold rainy night in Stoke?

Would you rather talk about the games against Indiana State and Evansville?

I'll take Rob Gray Jr all day long over Shamet. Would also take Shake Milton and Jalen Adams.

Shamet didn't start playing point until over halfway through the season. The only indication we could get from play in the MVC was that he is unselfish when the team is averaging over 80 points a game and routinely beating opponents by 30-point margins.

He looked like a very good point guard while playing against very overmatched teams in the MVC. That's not much of a measuring stick. National press and ratings blew up after the Kentucky game when he was playing against opponents who were not overmatched.

Who is Shake? I'm not familiar with players in The American yet. If you're talking about Shake's offensive game, and he's the team's best or most dangerous option from the perimeter, he's going to have to eat Zach Brown's lunch. Brown is WSU's 6'6" defensive stopper who can guard positions 1-3.

Shake Milton. SMU's 6'7" point guard with a 7' wing span.

I get the feeling Wichita St fans underestimate how difficult it is to win in this league.

Yes - there are some weaker teams. ECU, Tulane and USF have struggled.

The other eight are legititmately difficult to beat as a visitor.

Im struggling to find where WSU fans are saying they going to walk in and win this league? Can you point me to the direction of those feelings?

If you truly believe WSU is a preseason Top 5/10 team like most polls think, then I'm not sure why people think it's unrealistic that WSU has a chance to win the league.

Wichita State will be the favorite. But the league is good enough that if you gave me Wichita State vs. the field, I would pick the field if that makes sense. I could see Wichita, Cincinnati, and SMU all finishing within a game or two of each other.

Also, this league has as deep of a roster of point guards as any in the country. Landry Shamet, Jalen Adams, Shake Milton, Rob Gray Jr., and BJ Taylor are all terrific players. UC transfer Cane Broome could be really good as well, but I will leave him off that list until we see him play at this level.

Also, regarding the talk between Wichita fans and fans of other AAC schools -- I think it's all pretty natural. Some Wichita fans probably think AAC fans are underrating them, while some AAC fans probably think Wichita fans are underrating how tough it will be to play in the AAC. As always, the truth lies in between. I think Wichita State and its fans know the AAC will be a challenge obviously -- that's why they're here. And I think people on this board realize Wichita State is a top ten team. Folks just don't want to hear that the newcomer is the favorite to win the league. As a Cincinnati fan, I would actually prefer Wichita to be the favorite. Mick Cronin's teams always play best with a chip on their shoulder.

Thanks, I will check him out.

Right now all I know is about WSU's players, so it's impossible for me to make any comparisons. Sorry if I'm coming off as arrogant. Perhaps my need of education about the league is clouding my judgement. I can be educated.

I certainly expect to get quite an education when the Shox visit a couple of courts in the league.

Edit: Just went and looked at Shake's stats from last year and I like him A LOT. Nice A/TO ratio (2.5). Milton against Shamet should be some great basketball. Their stat lines are pretty similar, except for minutes. Now I know exactly what to watch for in WSU/SMU matchups. I suspect we'll be seeing 6'6" Zach Brown playing D against Milton.

I think that this is a very accurate assertion. Personally I'm still too excited to start talking smack and making claims. It also helps that I have been reading up a ton on American teams and know about as well as any non-fan the talent and potential that their teams have, so I don't want to take anything for granted. It will be a dog fight next year, which is a welcome change. I look forward to actively rooting for all of your teams in all games out of conference. Can't wait until November.

I think it'll be fun comparing WSU's players to the rest of the league's best. IMO we'll probably see one of the best collection of players on the court and whether the individual players at WSU are better or worse may not matter if they just win as a group. I do know one thing, they will play extremely hard and the atmosphere in Wichita will rival any place in the country. It will be fun, no matter what.

The hard part might be getting a ticket to a game in Wichita next year as a visiting fan. They have sold out Koch arena every game for years. But probably having home and away games will help.

I actually like having a new fan base around here that's hyped up about their team, it shows that there's life in their program. Hopefully their addition will help elevate this league's play.

Shake is currently the hghest rated AAC player in next year's NBA draft. Projected late first to early second. Similar to Semi in this year's draft.
