I'm still hopeful that we get NCSU on the schedule soon; I'm not an insider by any stretch, but I don't think there have been any burned bridges.
You are probably right, but he clearly had it on his mind and had made prior contact. So, it certainly couldn't have helped. As far as the bridges go, I find out hard to believe people wouldn't be pissed about him pouching the best player. I however, place a good deal of that blame on Bass for letting him out of his scolly and not blocking state. Amateur move.

Again, no inside information, but I find it hard to believe that Bass allowed his transfer to NCSU because he is inexperienced or "amateur". There is reasonable debate on both sides of the issue and a lot of public shaming for programs that restrict players from pursuing their "best interest". I'm not flopping on this issue, instead conceding middle ground. I'm not positive my position was correct, but given my interest in the outcome, I think emotion played a big part. If this was a kid going from CoC to Clemson, I may have the same position, but I wouldn't dig in as deep.

We had talent but not size...but the size was on its' way. Every one of his incoming recruits was at least 6'5" and athletic.

My point was simple. His COACHING made a positive impact, and allowed him to win games with a roster that had weaknesses. And the very specific style of play, which focused on using the press, allowed him to put a winning product on the floor from day one. WITHOUT the pressing style, I doubt he could have replicated his success. I think we are going to see that trying to simply "out talent" and "out coach" our way to success, without using the press is going to be a challenge.

Agreed. Phenomenal success. I only questioned his reluctance to play chuck throughout the season because I knew we needed him ready in the NCAAs to have a chance.

My only guess for not playing Chuck is maybe he was very lazy in practice or lack of effort. I liked Chuck alot more than Bryan at times and he sure could block some shots.
As far as Keatt's and Bryce goes; Keatt's left for more money and a new challenge. I wished he had stayed another year or two to accept our next challenge and win some games in big dance, but he didnt. I wish him well and thanks for putting UNCW back on the basketball map. We are forever grateful. Bryce left to be with his coach, period. The uncertainty of an entirely new coaching staff was too much for Bryce. The not knowing if McGrath can coach, recruit, win or even if Bryce would be the man in this new system didn't bode well for him. It sucks for us but not the end of the world as we are heavy in the guard area. We can fill some of the void and maybe find a star in Taylor, Richmond, Fornes Estime. It speaks volumes about how much better our team is against state since they practically took all our coaches, 1 star player and S&C coach. Let it go guys. We are going to be a talented team this year and it appears that McGrath and staff can recruit, now let's see if they can coach.

Great post Uncw3

I agree with your sentiments

Sucks he left but completely understand why

No need to burn bridges unnecessarily when everyone is simply doing what's best for them and their families

Tell that to Keatts. He burned his bridge here. And it's highly debatable that Bryce is better off being an afterthought at a shittay ACC school than he would be setting records at UNCW. (actually it's not really debatable)

Not trying to stir the pot more than you guys are already doing amongst yourselves, but you are really assuming that all Bryce cared about was setting records or having his jersey retired. That is, on top of the belief that you do not think he will continue his rise and become anything in the ACC, which nobody has any clue of since it has not happened yet.

Many people play the game because they just enjoy the game. The also play for coaches who fit their preferred style well so that they continue to enjoy the game. Many also aspire to reach the next level with their talents. Some also want recognition and being in the limelight, which includes being at more media heavy schools. There are a whole host of reasons players play the game, so to me to assume that he should have stayed at UNCW purely to set records and "be the man" seems super short-sighted.

FWIW we went through a similar loss (Damion Lee) who actually became one of the main faces of transfers, especially graduate transfers. The reaction you guys are giving Bryce for leaving is very different than Drexel had with Damion. In fact most figured it was a matter of time before he wanted to play on a bigger stage and showcase his talents. You appreciate the player while he is there and you wish them well in the future. In the end most of us are just fans who watch for entertainment or pride purposes (in the case of alumni). For top players, basketball is their career path, and with that comes legitimate business decisions, and no matter those decisions, fans have to respect the players choices for their own career path. In the end, it is their life and their career, not the fans.

I get it, i understand it, just not happy with how it all went down. Had he wound up somewhere different, I'd have wished him well. And my assumption is based on a small sample size, but he hasn't preformed well against that level of talent. We will see.

I disagree that he burnt his bridge. He left for an ACC job and a substantial amount of more money. Bryce left to go play for the coach the recruited him and removed himself from the uncertainty that comes with a regime change.

I personally am thankful for the time Keatts and Bryce put it at UNCW and wish them the best moving forward. I would be willing to guess that is the sentiment from the Athletic Dept at UNCW.

Again, ZERO issue with him leaving for ACC job(even though it's a ****** one) that amount of money can't be turned down. And Zero issue with CJ going to a bigger school. I have serious issue with the complete disrespect for the school that gave him a shot by purging it's best player. IMO that is the very definition of burning a bridge. Let's put this in perspective, I leave for a better job on good terms with my boss , then I proceed to steal my bosses best employee to come with me. Pretty sure i'd have "burned that bridge".

You view it is Keatts "stealing" Bryce

I view it as Bryce doing what is best for Bryce.

To each his own.

Bryce leaving stung a little. I felt bitter that Keatts took him. But honestly losing Bryce hurts a lot less than losing Cacok would have. Let's move on.

I like our chances next year. We will have experienced guards and a big time post threat. The x-factors for me are Forne's development and the potential athletic post depth offered by Sallah. The kid from CFCC is going to catch some eyes and I have him picked as the biggest surprise impact player. That kid is going to get minutes...write it down.

It will be interesting to see how strong Estime is. His game is a bit similar to CJ. Unfortunately i'm not counting on CaCock until he's actually enrolled in September. I have a crappy feeling he's going to leave us too.

I'm not putting a lot of expectations on the freshman but they could easily surprise me. Cacok could leave but it's very doubtful at this point. If he does, it would not be State. He's better suited in a program that is intentional about getting post touches. C.B. and staff will make the offense run through him in half court sets. I'm guessing he was frustrated at times last year when he had position and no one fed him.

Definitely worth keeping an eye on him.

Btw, his name is pronounced "Jah-KEY". In no way is his first name intended to sound French.
