Did Pittsburgh slip something in to Rinne's drink before the series? This is not the same guy, he is giving up easy shots for goals, I don't understand what is going on with Rinne, he is single handily losing this series for Nashville...

But at least give the Pens credit for playing what many considered the best team in the NHL, and taking a 7-game series from them, winning three times in Washington, including the game-seven shutout. Real easy to dismiss it all as just luck when the Pens are the defending champions. Btw, it's not a coincidence that the Caps finished with the best record in the regular season and also had, by far, the fewest injuries.

And about the shots on goal, anyone can take a ton of shots on goal. There's an art to sharing the puck enough times in order to find the best opportunities rather than just flailing away at it. And let's also not discount the accuracy of the shooters. So at least give the Pens some credit for making the most of their opportunities.

The quality of the shot is accounted for in expected goals. Certainly, there are some players that are skilled at shooting (a lot of Caps players, to be honest) and goalies play a bit of a roll (but Holgby is one of the best). Still, there is a lot of puck luck in hockey. Inches can be the decider in the sport. The Caps dominated large stretches of games and had nothing to show for it.

Not intending to whine about luck in the sport, but the Pens have been on a magical run the past few weeks despite getting handled pretty well.

So tell me, what was the expected goals between the 8th seed Predators and their Western opponents then?

Nash 17.4-16.8 vs Ana
Nash 14.9-14 vs Stl
Nash 10.3-9 vs Chi

Nashville had the fewest points (94) of any of the 16 teams that qualified for the playoffs. And only 3 of the other 15 playoff teams had a smaller goal differential. So how could their "expected goals" be higher against the 1, 3, and 5-seeds? This isn't making sense to me.

Why are you talking about goal differential? We are talking about how the game is played. That was the expected goal differential for each of the series based on play. Nothing that happened in the regular season matters. Nashville outplayed each of the 3 opponents.

Okay, now I think I understand where you're coming from. I was under the impression this whole time that the "expected goals" you're referring to was a statistical measure based on previous games and was established prior to a series beginning. I'm now assuming the expected-goals measure is a number derived after a game/series is already over. And btw, if that was explained in the link you previously provided, I apologize for not reading because I just haven't had the time or will to sit down and try and read something like that.

Like I said though, the Predators have really turned a corner here in the playoffs, and have impressed. Even as a Pens fan, I think Pittsburgh is fortunate to go into game 3 with a 2-0 lead.

Rinne was #16 in the NHL in save percentage during the regular season, at .918. Not bad, but nothing special. He has stepped that up in the playoffs considerably. Maybe he's coming back down to earth again? Just a conjecture. Remember also that he's facing the top-scoring offense in the NHL right now.

Murray was 8th in the NHL in save percentage during the regular season, at .923, and has likewise stepped up his game to .943 in the playoffs (tops among goaltenders in the playoffs). He might at some point slide back down to earth as well.

I think the next two games in Nashville will be especially tough for the Pens.

Through his career he has been up and down, but when he is up he is one of the best goaltenders in the NHL....He was playing lights out in these playoffs, the magnitude of the series or something has gotten in head at this point.....For sure Pittsburgh has playmakers but we are getting beat on garbage goals that he was stopping in his sleep before, Penguins have not played great just slapping light pucks and they are going in....Hopefully being back at home will get him going again...

I think the Pens offense has been a big part of it for sure. They make the most of their shots. I also think that has led to the Pens getting into Rinne's head some.

Rinne has conceded 8 goals in the finals, but two off rebounds his defensemen deflected in.

He's not been great in the finals but a goal each game off Preds is incredible bad luck.

Coach Laviolette is being very coy about the possibility of Saros starting on Saturday. I would be surprised if Pekka doesn't end up starting, however. Granted, his lifetime record against Pittsburgh is dismal.

I think the problem is threefold. Shoddy goaltending in the Final, too many stupid penalties (Pens have too much firepower to be giving them the man advantage) and we are REALLY missing Ryan Johansen and Kevin Fiala. They are the two main offensive playmakers and there is not much there as replacements. Colton Sissons has been really good, and Aberg looked like Wayne Gretzky on his goal last night, but neither of them come close to Johansen and Fiala.

I'll give you that you miss Johansen, but I think you're overstating Fiala's impact as a playmaker.

Johansen - 61 points in 82 games this year (14 goals and 47 assists)
Fiala - 16 points in 54 games this season (11 goals and 5 assists)

The Penguins are missing Kris Letang, 4th in the voting for the Norris Trophy last season, who is widely regarded as one of the best defensemen in the NHL. Having said that, here are Kris Letang's stats for this season...

Letang - 34 points in 41 games (5 goals and 29 assists). IOW, as a defenseman for the Pens, Letang is getting points more prolifically than both Johansen and Fiala are.

Nashville needs to not panic. They really dominated game 1 and were still pretty competitive in game 2. They are now at home, which will give them a slight boost. I don't agree with making sweeping changes because you lost due to bad luck. I mean if Rinne's confidence is shot....that is one thing, but don't panic.
