Ouch... Spears must not have wanted the job?

So this article confirms Chris Spears wanted the job but EMU turned him away. I hope Smith knows what he's doing since Chris was very well liked. He and Heather awakened EMU with a vision and plan to get us to top of the MAC.

Yes. Unless there is private information we don't know (e.g., salary demands, etc.) the EMU president has made a huge mistake.

The new AD will find that he has a hard act to follow: Lyke and (interim) Spears.

Sheer idiocy. Plus a waste of money for an unnecessary 'search' firm.

Not knowing the politics of EMU, how much of a role is this new President playing in all this?

EagleTough, I agree with you on the importance of knowing the dynamics of EMU (aka politics) based on his succeess at NIU. Here we have an architect with proven hiring skills (he'll get some credit for CC), plus he'll get some credit for catapulting EMU facilities from the bottom to the top and yet we hire a search firm to replace an experienced well liked proven leader? Of course we're speculating on why Smith didn't hire him but if it is about $s you give the interim AD a big raise after securing a $6M gift.

RE: New AD Search
I doubt it was about money. Spears had a very good idea what EMU could/would pay, and he wanted a shot. He would have taken a little less money to see his (and Lyke's) vision play out over the next 2-3 years. At that point he would have been in position for the big $$$$$ jobs.

We'll see how it plays out, but I suspect 'All_EMU' is on to something when he mentioned earlier that he heard Josh Moon could be the likely replacement. If he ultimately gets hired hopefully he'll do a fantastic job, everyone can get behind him, and he'll turn out to be the next 'big thing.' On the flip side, his hiring will show clearly that EMU passed over a more qualified candidate in order to appease the new President. While also proving the search firm a sham and a waste of money.

Sure, that's a lot of speculation at this point, but what else is this board for. Time to sit back and cross our fingers that whoever is hired will continue the good work of Lyke/Spears smoothly and effectively.

RE: New AD Search
Putting faith in this board of regents who helped chase away one of best presidents EMU ever had? (Dr Martin who clashed over EMU's participation in the Detroit Educational Authority that was even more incompetent and corrupt than the people it replaced). This better be a transparent process and not some good Ole boy cigar filled room scheme because I will not donate a dime just so Smith can have a posse.

I can't believe "the powers" that be told Spears we're not even interested in you for the position but you can be on the selection committee. What a slap in the face.

I'm more worried that EMU will be stuck with Murphy for a couple more seasons....
Lyke was going to fix the basketball program since her first priority, Football, was headed in the right direction.

Interesting article on Lyke....she was looking to leave EMU. Apparently Bunsis wore on her efforts.....

Think it was more than Bunsis. Problems with the Regents, at least one.

The AD job at EMU is definitively 'political' (not 'D' or 'R') but like having many bosses and all of the problems that it brings.

RE: New AD Search
As the headline reads....."it's a big step up for her." EMU was actually the easier job because she had nowhere to go but up. The expectations at Pitt are the complete opposite. They hired Narduzzi 2 years ago and he's done a good job, so her biggest job is already done (hiring the football coach). He's gone 8-5 his first 2 years, beating Clemson and Penn State last year, so the expectations at Pitt are through the roof. They were a national power back in the day, but no more. After losing their QB to the NFL, and OC to LSU, if they take a step back this year.....Heather may wish she had stayed at EMU, haha. Good luck to her, but with the big $$$ comes the big responsibility. 7 wins at EMU and she was some kind of savior......7 wins at Pitt and they'll be calling her a bust and asking for her head.

As far as EMU, this program has nowhere near turned the corner. We just reached 1st base. 7+ wins this year, shovels in the ground after the last game, and a recruiting class that ranks 6th or better and we'll have reached 2nd.

Next year will be the critical year to have a better sense of the new President, New AD, the team without Roback, and the recruiting momentum.

The simple reality remains......poor recruiting.....poor program. After 3 years Creighton gets a D on the recruiting front. All of the excuses are gone, he needs to deliver this year on the recruiting trail.

Lyke was going to leave sooner or later, just like Creighton if he continues to win. Welcome to MACtion.

RE: New AD Search
I agree with your comments.

2016 was 'one data point' for football. The 'second data point' will be 2017 and maybe most importantly 2018, w/out Roback will be the third data point.

One point is NOT a trend. The next data point could suggest an upward trajectory or we could regress in 2017 (or 2018, if 2017 is a solid year).

One could easily make the point that the new football facilities will be a big boost and make the future outlook more positive.

The bottom line is still EMU (CC) must out recruit and out coach teams like TOL, WMU, CMU, NIU, etc.

the new AD must maintain the new buildings momentum, hope CC keeps us winning in football, there will a number of administrative and coaching vacancies that will need to be filled.

Murphy's future remains a big question mark, we need to gain momentum in men's basketball. Its been back to back disappointing seasons.

We are kind of at our '3rd string' AD, first Heather then Christian, and then Erin.

Could you imagine the Tigers if they went to their 3rd closer? 03-lmfao

Smith just dragging this out, pretending that the overpriced search firm, and EMU search committee, are earning their keep....... before announcing his previous AD at tiny Northern State University is hired.
