There's only 130 of these jobs in FBS ... would be very curious to hear why he wouldn't want it, especially given that he came to EMU to switch to external areas to broaden his experiences because he wasn't getting sniffs at jobs at NIU when he was more internally driven.

He has tremendous potential as an AD. Lyke proved to be great, but Christian's a safer bet because he's been at this level and in this conference for some time now. Look around the MAC and the better ADs (Schaus at Ohio, Nielsen at Kent) usually are the ones who didn't come directly from Autonomy 5 conferences.

RE: New AD Search
You have two posts on this board, both advocating for Mr. Spears? How do you know him?

I think everybody on this board has advocated for Spears, it's a no brainer. Have to assume he's already told EMU that he'll be following Lyke to Pitt as his career path of choice. Sad to lose him as everything revolving around EMU athletics has been really positive recently.

Hopefully they get lucky with a great new hire to continue the progress. Hire the wrong person and all the momentum could go South quickly. Crossing fingers.

Absolutely.

Many fans do not give the AD position the respect it deserves.

The AD hires and fires. The ADs have professional relationships with the coaches. The relationship between Heather and CC seemed extremely strong.

The AD has to beg the university for budget authority (dollars) including maintenance monies for faciliites such as turf, lights, etc. and manage those dollars.

The AD is responsible for or approval of schedules. As we know, 'inappropiate' schedules can be disastrous. We all have seen FB schedules where EMU has played two money games which essentially 'end' the season. "Body bag" games.

In the case of the current facilties project there is project design and management, fund raising, etc.

And many, many more... This is the most important AD hire in the history of EMU athletics... And as Eagle Tough suggests: A wrong hire and EMU athletics could head south.

My bet is he'll make much more money. Heather Lyke only made $250k (still a lot to me) per year as our AD. I'm guessing her salary was at least doubled at Pitt. Spears will probably make $300k at Pitt as associate AD. Pure speculation on my part but I bet it's money. To that end, most associate ADs leave their position to run their own show as an AD. Hard to figure out why he's leaving except he'll probably make more money at Pitt.....

I believe Heather is now making MORE than 2x 250K. Lot more.

Believe I heard the number but don't remember the source.

I would suspect it's a tough decision for him. Assuming his ultimate goal is to be a P5 AD.

Is it easier to achieve his goal by tagging along with Lyke, still making more $ than he would at EMU, biding his time, assuming everything goes well at Pitt, eventually getting P5 interviews, and finally landing an AD job.

OR......staying at EMU to finish what he started, making less money, hoping the football program stays 6-7+ win competitive, while overseeing the completion of the facilities upgrades.

Scenario #2 allows him to make a big splash, and be seen as the next hot prospect. Scenario #1 is much safer.

High risk/high reward. Tortoise vs the Hare.

Can't fault him for going to Pitt, but would LOVE for him to finish what he and Lyke started here at EMU!

I'd love to see it, he's probably our best option should he want the job of course.

Anyone following the search at all knows he is not a candidate to be the athletic director because he is on the search committee.

I'm curious as to whether any names have "leaked" as candidates for either the AD job or the two assistant men's basketball coaching vacancies.

Some have stated our current/new President will bring his AD from Northern State University, who has MAC ties during a tenure at CMU. Bio here: http://nsuwolvesathletics.com/staff.aspx?staff=165

Certainly will be a bump for him, so he may not be as prone to leave as quickly (ie; Ohio State to EMU shock).

May be the frontrunner due to his relationship with the President.

Then it's a shame he wasn't a candidate to begin with, especially if it's true that he was interested in the position.

My linear timeline would seem to be:

He was not a candidate, for WHATEVER reason(s),

And then, because he was not a candidate, got to be on the search committee.

Makes a lot of sense. The positive is that Moon's Bio shows some positive history of fundraising and facilities upgrades.

The negative is we're talking Northern State, a tiny D2 school with 3,500 students. His resume is nowhere near that of Spears. On it's face, ignoring Spears seems to be a mistake. Hopefully all the stars line up and things work out great.

Who says cronyism isn't alive and well? 05-stirthepot

So this article confirms Chris Spears wanted the job but EMU turned him away. I hope Smith knows what he's doing since Chris was very well liked. He and Heather awakened EMU with a vision and plan to get us to top of the MAC.
