This is surprising. I think we all knew he wasn't coming back, but didn't think Kansas would go after him.

@GoodmanESPN: Kansas has landed William & Mary grad transfer Jack Whitman, source told ESPN. Averaged 10 and 5 this past season.
He'll be a good practice player for them. KU doesn't have a lot of big guys on their bench for next year with Carlton Bragg transferring.

Jack's Transfer Destination
Although beset early by his shoulder issues, Jack came in as a soft player, but leaves as a much tougher big man. He was developed in these past few years. Would guess a lot of love/hate with Tony and staff to get Jack to that point, as well as, work on his part. I looked forward next year to seeing Jack continue to improve and have a monster final year, but unfortunately he chose to take a route of his own interest.
We certainly are not a program with perks, but players know that coming in, and there is a reason why most of us proudly value that One Tribe bond and The College for the rest of our lives. There is a lot of good there, things done right, warts and all.
Jack may be getting an opportunity to play at a program with perks, on a bigger stage, and a guaranteed Big Dance ending, but for me at least, he is forfeiting that lifetime-lasting, Tribe Family bond in the process with the way it has transpired. Jack you're not in the 'Burg anymore. There's no place like home....

His departure really hurts W&M. But, as a college basketball player, it would be hard to pass up the opportunity to experience playing for a program like KU. Hard to fault him for that, especially if there were other issues we may not be aware of.

When Kansas goes the NCAA tourney next year can W&M claim it vicariously through Whitman?

Jack's Transfer Destination
Got to feel for Jamion Christian, who has now had 4 players transfer in the past month from his Mt St Mary's team, including his two starting guards. All looking for bigger pastures. Nothing like two weeks left in the late signing period and finding you've got 4 unexpected slots to fill.

I have no problem with underclass players transferring even though they sit out for a year. But, I do not like this grad. 5th year transfer. I wonder who the heck came up with it.

Kansas is a good place for him- their centers only get called for 1 of every 6 fouls they commit.

I associate the rule most with Russell Wilson and Greg Paulus (Not Mike...). I doubt that they're the pioneers of this, but they are the poster children as I see it.
Did some research and found this below article. Can't seem to track down the full history...yet.

RE: Jack's Transfer Destination
I have a question.
Did the funding the summer program by other alumni contribute to this player's ability to graduate on time and become a 5th year grad transfer?
The law of unintended consequences.

RE: Jack's Transfer Destination
If you want to claim that student athletes are in fact students, you shouldn't have a problem with it. If you finish your studies and want to pursue a graduate education, but the institution where you are doesn't have the right program (or in some cases may not have graduate programs at all), it's logical. I'm very aware of the business of college sports (particularly men's basketball and football), but for the majority of these people who will either not go pro, or not play more than a few years of pro ball, they shouldn't be penalized for wanting to better their education. I'm also a realist and know that many players will cite academics as a reason, when there may be other issues, but I think (or hope) there's some real value gained by some of these people. For Jack, I wish him the best of luck, and thank him for all he did for our program. Kansas is a major research institution with significant resources for students at the graduate level, and maybe had the "right" program for him. Getting to play some basketball and hang out in that new facility they have for the team is not bad either.

RE: Jack's Transfer Destination
Once a student has been at a school for 4 years and has a degree in hand I have no real issue with a)the player moving on to greener pastures or b) the school moving the player aside. Both sides have satisfied their obligations to one another. It sucks for the little guy that the grad transfer rule is basically used as a feeder program for big schools but eliminating it would probably make things even more imbalanced.
