Do you want a coach who's great in doing PR but clueless as a coach or do you want the opposite? Sounds like you would prefer JP because of his efforts to make the fans feel warm and fuzzy. Get real...we want a winning program back!

Ideally, I'd like both. We've had that in the past. We can get it again. Heck, we have one now (Norvell)

Dude, really? Norvell is a first year head coach. Of course he will attempt to win over the fans. His hard work speaks for itself. However, a seasoned veteran does not have to allow a crazed, obnoxious fanbase to dictate how he runs his program. Butt hurt miserables need to be cuddled.03-weeping

Not very likely would be the rational response.

This used to be true for Memphis but not anymore.

We are now the all you can eat buffet for the rest of the schools out there recruiting high level basketball players.

Sad.

Ok, went back and reread your post and see what you meant to say now. You were referring to Memphis the city and not the school. Other schools coming into OUR backyard, rather than the other way around.

And it's a valid point. Schools have as good a shot now as they ever had in getting our hometown kids. Of course, other schools were getting big players out of here even during the mighty Cal days. So probably a combo of the world today, and the state of our program.

A D-1 coach in the modern era has to be skilled and successful on the court and off the court through program promotion (including community service) and media relations.

I will admit I'm no fan of nepotism. Tubby needs to make Saul take Keelon's cushy 125k director of whatever job. Go hire a dynamic recruiter like Johnny Jones or Orlando Antigua who knows Memphis.

WHY, who cares as long as we win? Realistically, you didn't have both before Tubby got here so why act as though it's a big deal now? You had a goofy, misogynistic control freak who was great at wooing the fans to compensate for his inadequacy as a head coach in D1 basketball.

You need to have someone who will sell the program. Cal did this, and it benefited the program and him immensely. Memphians want to see their coach in the community. Our school needs our coach to assist in selling tickets.

Here's a comparison of two teams and their post-season success over the last 5 seasons:

Team A: Elite Eight, Round of 32, Final Four, NCAA Runner Up, NIT (Lost in first Round)
Team B: Sweet Sixteen, Sweet Sixteen, NCAA Runner Up, Final Four, NCAA First Round

They are nearly identical, except Team A had one season where they failed miserably (NIT first round exit), while team B's worst season was an NCAA first round exit. So, realistically, Team B has had better success

The two teams above are Kentucky and Wisconsin. Who is perceived as the better program? It's Kentucky by a landslide. Calipari makes sure that Kentucky is heard and seen EVERYWHERE. No one considers Wisconsin to be equal or better than Kentucky in basketball.

Our athletic dept would love to sell some extra season tickets for basketball right now. Tubby isn't exactly going out of his way to assist in this.

I think Tubby's plan is evident: he's trying to build a foundation with "his" guys in this recruiting class (and it's undeniable that the staff has hustled to assemble a respectable class), and add a handful of elite recruits in the '18 class. If he gets the key guys in 2018, he will have built a very formidable team relatively quickly. If he whiffs on the elite kids in '18, then the best he can accomplish is another Texas Tech: coach a bunch of 3 stars into a marginal tournament team.

If he accomplishes the former, we'll all be happy. If it's the latter, a few may be satisfied but the larger part fan base will be ready to move on IMO.

Why should realists like me eat crow upon a great season? Why should optimistic good Tiger fans (for lack of a better word) eat crow upon a poor season?

IMO, no Tiger fans should feel compelled to eat crow. All Tiger fans want success for our school and team. We just differ on the likelihood of achieving it.
