Whether that gets old or not is likely a matter of your pov. If you are primarily a P5 fan then yeah but if you're more of a G5 fan, then there are probably not nearly enough slaps at the P5.

Not nearly enough slaps. I WANT bad things for ESPN. Make no mistake. I'm actively rooting for them to do badly. And schools like Illinois,Cal, Wake, Rutgers etc. with their manufactured support and p5 money: I want bad things for you! You screwed over my school starting in 1997 with your stupid BCS, making us second class citizens and 20 years later your still doing it to us with the P5. I want ESPN to flop. ECU gets 1.7 million a year from tv money. P5 schools get 20 to 40 million a year. When the sh!t hits the fan ECU will collect nothing instead of pennies, but Illinois, Cal, Wake and Rutgers will stand there with their hands out crying like a welfare bum being told no more checks for you! I dream off the day!

Should McDonald's drop hamburgers from the menu because they are too expensive to cook? No doubt ESPN has "overpaid" for certain properties (those NFL and NBA contracts weren't cheap, either!), but those are the things that bring eyeballs... not some dudes pontificating about whether a player with a twisted ankle should sit out the first round of the playoffs!

The SECN has been a major bright spot for ESPN in terms of offsetting other downtrends, which is a major reason it will push hard to make the ACCN succeed.

In hindsight, it is clear that ESPN probably paid too much for the NFL, NBA, and MLB at a combined $4 billion per year. (The CFP/NY6 deals may also be in this category at $600 million per year, but the individual conference deals don't appear bloated in the same manner). ESPN made the major deals when it seemed like it would rain money forever. The same mentality that led to those deals applied to on air talent. While there undoubtedly are some on air personalities that bring an audience, a whole bunch of them are interchangeable with folks who would take a whole lot smaller paycheck to do the same job.

You got there before I could type it. College sports ain't the problem. Those deals are 10% of what pro sports deals cost. In fact, college sports represent pretty economical programming---basically it's like the difference between G5 contracts and P5 contracts.

By the way---lost in all this is the fact ESPN still makes a crap load of money---they just aren't growing revenue anymore. As to the layoffs---so what? There are literally 1000's of sports talk radio personalities that can do the same job as a ESPN talking head for $100k----no need to spend millions on a guy when revenue is falling. The beauty of talking head shows is they are cheap to produce---well, it's cheap to produce unless you have a bunch of bloated salaries ramping the costs up.

Like all businesses, ESPN got bloated when money was flowing easy---now that the revenue growth has slowed (or stopped), it's time to get control of costs. Their business is built on having a near monopoly on live sporting events---so losing sports rights isn't really an option. Cutting everything not connected to that live sports core mission is.

Mike Golic and Steven A. Smith may not be safe. Please fire Staven A.

there would be no way that ESPN lets go Steven A Smith. You see he would go immediately to FS1 and reunite with Skip. Somehow form a 3 way show with Shannon.

With Greenberg getting his own show, Golic is useless.

John Buccigross is gone. His contract was to have ended July 1, but he's getting an early exit.

College football coverage is going to take a hit if Richard Dietsch is to be believed.

Whether that gets old or not is likely a matter of your pov. If you are primarily a P5 fan then yeah but if you're more of a G5 fan, then there are probably not nearly enough slaps at the P5.

The part that gets old about it is that it derails threads intended to discuss other issues and the anger of the G5 is misdirected. We didn't create the milieu. The networks did. We didn't choose to leave you behind and all of the history up until realignment proves that. Markets first and now content, delivered in packages that maximize the profits of CBS, NBC, FOX and ESPN are why even large schools are leaving lifelong rivals to realign. P5 posters, P5 schools, and P5 conferences are not the cause of the product segregation. In some ways they are beneficiary and in some ways they are victim.

But I am putting all of you on notice that in the future turning any thread away from the OP and into a slap fight against the P conferences will get you warned and then banned for screwing up the thread.

If you want to hurl your angst at the P5 start an appropriate thread in which to do it, but do so on your own conference board. This board is an open forum for all and one in which we are intended to discuss issues. But, because of that we have a tighter enforcement of etiquette. It's not the smack room or verbal assault area and the board has lost its effectiveness putting up with this crap.

Heck even an occasional thread here dedicated to what you see as the injustices of the situation is okay as long as it isn't brought up in every unrelated news thread or in threads started about just a P5 issue.

The mods have discussed these problems among ourselves ad nauseam. We have nothing against you guys or the G5 schools, but we do have a major issue with the derailing of topics to discuss things not implied by the OP, or just to vent hostility that is totally unrelated to the OP.

There will be one formal warning for the first violation of this protocol followed by a forum ban if it continues.

The thread about Illinois G5 schools turned into a discussion about schools not even in Illinois and wasn't directed against the P5. This stuff has to stop. JR

RE: SN: Massive Layoffs Expected at ESPN
Just looking at the Disney Annual Report. For FY16, the Media Networks segment had operating income of $7.7 billion on $23.7 billion of revenues, so operating expenses were $16 billion. That's for all of Disney's networks, including ESPN, ABC, Disney Network, etc. The rights fees for the NFL ($1.9 billion), NBA ($1.4 billion) and MLB ($0.7 billion) would represent 1/4 of the segment's entire operating expenses, although I believe the NBA deal only went into effect this season.

The cable networks portion of Media Networks had operating income of $6.7 billion on $16.6 billion in revenue. That's an operating margin of 68%, which is unbelievably profitable, but the profits are flat year over year. This may be problem for investors and, obviously, employees, but it is not a problem for college conferences with long term deals.

Steven A. Smith is just awful. Get rid of Jenele Hill too. I hate mindless host who say things for shock value but have no clue about sports or history.

Golic just re-signed and is scheduled to host the new morning show. He isn't going anywhere. Greeny is getting his own tv show.

Anyone who celebrates someone else losing their jobs is an *******, plain and simple. Heck I won't celebrate anyone at say, Fox News, losing their jobs too.
