The disses started with liberal media outlets like ABC News, which tepidly announced in a snide tweet: “Dr. Vivek Murthy — an Obama appointee — resigns as Surgeon General, replaced by deputy Sylvia Trent-Adams, a nurse.”

Actually, she’s a nurse with a Ph.D., so you can call her “Doctor.”

Similarly, the New York Times — the so-called bastion of social justice activism — bleated in a snobby headline: “Nurse Replaces Surgeon General After Obama Appointee Resigns.”

It’s not until the last paragraph that the New York Times mentions that Sylvia Trent-Adams has a Ph.D. and was a nurse officer in the Army who had served as deputy surgeon general.

I would choose neither.....only an MBA or with major experience would've been my choice....

She's the acting SG so honestly her qualifications don't bother me.

Also the duties of the SG are pretty much administrative to begin with so I REALLY don't understand what the big deal is.

the Peter principle comes to mind....but yeah, I'd weigh experience as my #1 over any degree....

I'm not a fan of tossing all degrees into a bucket as valid....the ol' adage, "the degree gets you in the door - it's what you can do with it determines the real value" comes to mind

My point was that it is just a title, therefore there is no need to be an MD to fill the position. So the point of knowing the difference between a PhD and a MD is really no point at all.

The vast majority of the time, nobody even knows who the Surgeon General is. Jocelyn Elders and C. Everett Coop being the exceptions. But its a huge concern all of a sudden? I don't think so.

Hell, I've spent enough time in the ER both as a patient and not to know that nurses run the show, they just let doctors take the credit.
