Not really

If anything, the SWAC is gonna join the MEAC. The Mississippi schools sans Jackson State may be next to drop if not a total school closure/merger. TSU went through another corruption scandal, their administration may get taken over or they may lose accreditation (just a hunch, nothing substantiated). Another hunch is I could see Grambling going away or merging with Louisiana Tech. Same with Southern and LSU.

I think Jackson State is turning into a multi-race university, and not truly an HBCU like it used to be. They may survive. One report is that Jackson State will be saved while one of the other schools which I forget, either Alcorn State or Mississippi Valley State would merged into Jackson State. Sadly, the Grambling State Vs Southern U. is the hot game in the SWAC selling out a lot of tickets that are FBS size crowds. Too bad they can't get the fans out to support them when they take on the other SWAC teams.

I'd have never imagined that. Jackson doesn't strike me as a multi-cultural area, so having a muti-ethnic schools to deflect that seems unusual.

Yeah, Jackson State had an award winning white quarterback who started for them a few years ago. Helped Jackson State win so many football games.

http://meacswacsports.blogspot.com/2012/...white.html

The quarterback's name is Casey Therriault. With 10,000 students enrolled including whites lead them to be one of the top HBCU with a student body count. They figured out a way to save the school without controversies like some of the others.

Time for HBCU's to go the way of the dinosaur. Seems redundant and outdated with African-American students at every other school in the country, the presence of junior colleges and with diploma mills popping up for people both in person and online for those that can't handle major university curriculum.

And stop, not only am I black but I went to an HBCU, granted one of the better ones (I'm just a lifelong Coog fan).

What does being a Multi Race university have to do with HBCU status? One doesn't have an impact on the other.

Casey wasn't the first, second, nor third white QB at Jackson State. No sure what point you're trying to make.

I am arguing that they are not closing down, or heading to a lower level. They are not hurting like Alcorn State or Mississippi Valley State. The lawmakers in the state wants to merge those two into other schools, and one of the two will be merged into Jackson State if they get their way. It is a fight from advocates against merging the schools. You can't run these schools with no money.

That merger was talked about and died almost 10 years ago.

Not really. Their situation on the administrative side is starting to stabilize somewhat, and while they aren't flush with cash the athletics side isn't anywhere close to digging in couch cushions for change. They aren't even playing a body bag game this year.

SC State has done an outstanding job of getting alums to give back to the school. They've also Been VERY aggressive in recruiting students. SC State's enrollment numbers had dropped significantly in the past years but they've welcomed record setting freshmen classes in 2015 and 2016.

Agreed. They aren't out of the woods by any means but it seems like the changes imposed upon them by the state are making a difference.

They also are considering a move down to D2 athletics. I know a few Bulldogs who are "in the know" at SC State who all say they wouldn't be shocked to see SC State head back to the SIAC. Coppin State is also considering the move down.

RE: Savannah State headed to D-II
If everyone were making rational rather than emotional decisions, the ranks of Division I would shrink. Division II and III would grow as would the NAIA.

There was a "gold rush" there are 56 more schools in Division I hoops than in 1991. Many driven by the idea that the share of the NCAA Tournament money and some money games would offset the costs of going from being a high scholarship Division II to a low scholarship (relatively speaking) Division I.

Salaries have been rising though they aren't going crazy trying to keep up. The scholarship the school billed them $8000 for is now $25,000 but the NCAA money hasn't kept up.

We've had a couple fuel price shocks that have driven up the cost of travel though that's back to more manageable levels now. Airlines have more full seats (insert United joke here) and don't cut as good of deals for a 20 person traveling party.

This is a sports bubble but there are plenty of schools that will cut costs to the bare minimum or dig up a new fee for students to hang around in Division I because they fear a backlash if they drop.

Would it be more wiser for the FCS level schools break down more regionally conference? MEAC what killed Winston-Salem. A-Sun is shaping up to be more regional except for New Jersey Tech.

Plus, we do have some D2 schools that do want to move up that does have the money to compete at D1.
Southern New Hampshire is one of those that have the money to make the move. Maybe they can pay a conference in the Northeast $5 million dollars just to accept them?

We should do an exercise on what we these D1 conferences would look like if they were regional instead of being spread too far apart?
