I hope she's smart, sweet, sexy and a relentless promoter.

RE: New President to be named
We should all hope for a new president that wants to build on what Pres. Dunn has accomplished and not reinvent the wheel to change WMU for the sake of change.

WMU & Kalamazoo can not afford another Judy Bailey

Why would the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit be a good choice as a College President?

Actually Washington DC needs a Judge more than WMU needs a President.

The last time the board did a closed search we ended up with Judy Bailey. Not happy that they chose to keep it closed this time. We have to hope that this group of Governor appointed members gets it right.

I agree, this should have been done openly. We don't need another Judy Bailey.

The good news is the board only has 3 seats on the 22 person committee. The rest are made up of students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, etc.

It was open in the sense that anyone could have submitted input via the website and the 3 open discussion sessions they held.

I don't think they could have been much more transparent without causing issues (might turn some interested and qualified parties off if they have to have it shown publicly). They wouldn't want to put their current employer in that position if they don't get the job and then come back. They wouldn't want everyone to know they were the 2nd, 3rd, 4th choice. Obviously time will tell, but all you can do is hope to have learned from past mistakes in making these choices.

Impressive selection.Based on his biography he has an interest and a real grasp on the impact the University can have on the local and regional economy. Under his leadership here's hoping the University and the Community realizes new heights and economic prosperity.

Given my limited knowledge (I can probably name less than 5 current presidents of any college or university in the country), what would you have liked to have seen to have a more positive reaction? Or, is it the fact that you are in a similar situation to me where without any other knowledge, it is tough to be too excited (unless we had the president of Harvard decide he really likes Kalamazoo) or disappointed (the committee decided my lack of experience was exactly the different route they wanted to take with this next president)

Quite the resume. Assume he can grow our academic profile...but the name of the game is fundraising...hope he can excel there.

I would have like to have seen someone with a legitimate connection to WMU. Also, someone without an extreme partisan (either side) background.

This president needs to work with the Michigan Legislature which controls the majority of WMU's funding. And he needs to work closely with BOTH Democrats AND Republicans. Right now, Republicans control both the Michigan House and Senate and the Governorship, for better or worse. How will our new president work with them considering his partisan background?

I am hopeful this man can do it, but not encouraged.

That said, he has my full support and trust. I'm just not thrilled.

Fundraising AND student recruitment.

The number of high school graduates in Michigan is rapidly decreasing. All universities and colleges will be competing for a smaller pool of incoming freshmen.

What does our new president bring to the table to help attract incoming students?

We're getting our butts kicked by GVSU for freshman, let alone MSU and U-M

RE: New President to be named
He has little to no background in Education Leadership. He's been a faculty member, an economist and an appointee to some task forces during the Obama Administration. What qualifies him to be a University President at an up and coming mid-major?

Sorry, I don't see this one at all. This is the best the Board could do after a months-long search? All that secrecy to pick someone with no appreciable Higher Education leadership background.

We've said it before and I'll say it again-when Committees ignore input from average folks who have skin in the game they end up screwing things up. Hope we don't have another Judith Bailey.
