Elton Alexander on Kent State Basketball Program
It's worth your while to go to Cleveland.com and read Eltons article on Kent State basketball this morning. It's about Kent putting emphasis on the basketball program. There are some comments from Warren being quoted. Nothing from the AD or coach so you get a feel where the President feels we are headed. Go to sports/college to find it.

He called VCU a private college like Butler. This is incorrect. VCU is a public university.

Obviously he did not have Warren read it before he published.

No news in that story, except Kent received $30 million worth of publicity with their NCAA bid.

Also we got half the money we need for a new practice facility, but not enough to start construction.

Same old talk, with no action

RE: Elton Alexander on Kent State Basketball Program
With the new budget submitted by Gov Kasich the university is actually going to take a big hit in the upcoming year. He has proposed that universities should share the cost of books up to $300 per undergrad student. So using this years enrollment numbers that will cost Kent roughly $10,278,000. Plus a two year freeze on tuition and fees. So the only place more money for athletics can come from is donations.

From what I've seen elsewhere, the textbook fee looks unlikely. University presidents have lobbied successfully against it.

I'm suspicious as to how you get $30 million of publicity in 1 week. How much did the Indians gain by winning their last ten games in 2013 and losing a one game playoff? Look at the attendance in 2014 for your answer. Now after their long run in the playoffs in 2016 see what their attendance will be in 2017 (already about 60% of last years). We are all excited about our late season run but having that draw in a lot of new fans is unlikely. We need to sustain it for a few years.

Haven't read the article, but $30m of publicity isn't about new fans as much as publicity overall to the entire University. I don't know how that's calculated and I don't know that I believe it, but it's clearly not a figure that is tied to athletics.

It is indirectly. Good publicity means more students and more income. If the athletic dept turns it share of that money into better recruiting and performance you should get more fans. I like you doubt it is an accurate number and one season of it is not enough to make any of that happen. Heck until Akron lost to Kent in the finals they were the ones getting all the NE Ohio publicity (boy did they mess that up). Kent got only one good week.

I like reading his articles because he writes about something I'm interested in. However, I learned 15-20 years ago when he was covering the women's team that accuracy is not his strength. Most of the time it doesn't mean that much but this time it kind of blew his theory.

Agree. Couldn't spell Kellon Thomas to save his life and his quote of John Fleming this March is priceless.

I think his main point of the article is correct though. So far the KSU Basketball Priority plan is just all talk. Little has changed. If you read the article. His quotes from President Warren are hardly inspirational. She sounds tentative IMO.

I agree 100%. The discussion on Elton was just a side bar. His skepticism is obvious and so is Warrens lack of inspiration.

RE: Elton Alexander on Kent State Basketball Program
He was right about 1 thing in that article, KSU missed the boat to make KSU Men's Basketball the priority after the Elite8 run 15 years ago, so hopefully they get it right this time. The athletic department has made some small changes recently for Men's Basketball (dedicated strength & conditioning coach for mens & womens bball, new chair back seats, better lighting in MACC, great & brand new athletic training center in Annex instead of cramming into the training rooms under the bleachers on upper floor of MACC, done some updated painting/logo/signage in MACC, new training/learning center), but nothing big (larger assistant coaching salary pool, practice facility, MACC renovation into bowl seating ((Laing Kennedy talked about this in 1 of my classes in Sports Management back in 2002)), larger recruiting budget, etc.

The Game Plan was announced on March 10th 2016, so a little over a year old, I have input the link below to The Game Plan Scorecard so you can how they are doing.

http://kentstatesports.com/sports/2016/6...ecard.aspx

Looks like someone hasn't updated in a while or they are behind schedule on many items that were supposed to be completed in Summer 2016, Fall 2016, & Winter 2016.

2 things I didn't notice before, in 2020 they are adding a Media Studio in the MACC and in 2023 another women's sport will begin competition.

Good point on those little things. They have improved the experience for the fans and players. I especially like the new seats. Those yellow plastic things were getting old. All these things show some intent by the AD and President. Hopefully they can find the money.
