There are things UR could do but they either have refused to do it or won't consider it. These can be done despite playing in a small stadium:

1. Summer session for the football team. This is a huge advantage for JMU and it takes money and UR has the money. Having the players there all summer taking classes, working with strength and conditioning and having players run drills is huge.

2. Uniform and Helmets--The players like this stuff and there are some cool things UR could do. Again, I don't know if they refuse to do it or not, but this matters. They rolled out a new helmet last year with the white helmet with the red spider but the spider decal is too large.

3. Game day atmosphere--This can change with good marketing. Red out, white out and blue out take care of 3 games. Good hype videos help. Getting students out with whatever is needed.

4. Attendance--We should not be able to buy as many tickets as we do every other year. They should easily fill 7,500 seats while giving 500 seats to the opposing team.

They should be able to fill 8,200 seats while govong 500 to the opposing team- but they won't.

JMU @ UR game was listed as an 8700 sellout (And even if there are games with overflow more than 8700 they probably wouldn't list more due to the wealthy neighbors). How much was JMU? 1/4? 1/3?

I think fan support issues at RU go beyond football. They play hoops in the best mid-major conference and have a hard time filing up the Robins Center. Meanwhile, 8 miles down the road VCU sells out every game playing the Same conference schedule. Why? I don't think RU connects with the Richmond community and is seen as an elitist university for a bunch of rich Northeast kids. Plus a large number of their students leave Richmond as soon as they graduate. Given their small size, this doesn't leave a lot of alumni in the area. I think their admin realizes this and have proceeded accordingly (I.e., 8k on-campus stadium) and knows the university's athletic limitation.

its the small student size. That's less students on campus. less alum. basically, less "fans".

large public schools are the ones who can grow their athletic programs, in particular football. without it, you are only going to go so far.

name the last small private school to move up? There hasn't been one. All schools that have gone FCS to FBS, or moved up a level within FBS are large public state schools.

the schools that are private and in a P5 FBS conference have been grandfathered in...the Wake's, Duke's, Baylor's, Vandy's, Northwesterns, etc. And those are the schools that struggle the most to sustain success in football at the P5 level.

and those that don't have as much history have over the years been "relegated" down the FBS food chain...SMU, Tulsa, etc. Baylor could have been one of them. But some political pull within Texas back in the day got them in the Big12 over Houston.

It's the reason successful hoops programs that are small and private like Villanova and Georgetown and Creighton don't play football.

It's not a coincidence that JMU football has grown so much over the last 20 years as the student body has doubled in size.

we have gotten 8,000 students at football games. That's less than half the student population at the school today. When I was a student in the late 80's/early 90's, that would have been 80% of the students on campus! Would have been unheard of to get that many.

that large student body is what is fueling our growth in athletics. UR does not have that luxury. That is why they have basically remained the same during the same time frame that JMU has seen such growth in athletics. And they will likely remain the same going forward while we have a chance to move to the next level and continue to grow.

Agreed, but community support can make a big difference, think of the U or SC. Both are private schools with huge athletic programs because of the support of their local communities. RU is located in a city of a million people but very few actually care about RU athletics. That's what they need to address if they want to grow their athletic program. I just don't think they want to.

right, but again. those schools were already part of the establishment. not trying to grow and move up.

Kind of odd you want the opinion of a bunch of ignorant, stupid, classless fans, no?

I'll respond to this honestly. Yes that was me who said that on the NDSU board and everything I said I believe about jmu and their fans. I have seen countless disrespectful acts by puke fans and have talked to fans of other CAA schools who agree and say they will never go to a game at jmu because they agree that y'all are a bunch of classless douchebags. I did and continue to talk smack about UR on that board because I don't like what's going on over there right now and I'm pretty close to cutting ties with them. Also I don't think you want to play Tech again, it wouldn't go to well.

Yet you come on our board asking for our advice and impressions of Durden as an OC. Which for the most part we readily give to you in good faith. Now you call us douches when you are uncovered as a troll? mmmmm, ok. Another reason to hate RU and VT. You somehow have confirmed my deep hatred of both schools.

Coach Durden is confident. The new Spider staff thinks they own Coach Houston because they were 2-0 vs him. UTC vs Citadel. We shall see.

If he truly believes that I have far less respect for him as a coach.

I hope he goes back to what he did so well at JMU.. QB sideline checks every play. Maybe they'll even throw the ball!

I hope he's that clueless facing us because it's gonna be a lot of fun tearing his offense to shreds.

Where'd you see that?

A few of their fans had mentioned it when Coach Huesman was hired which is fine, no problem. Now I have heard it directly and indirectly from their staff when JMU and the Spiders are discussed. Huesman and Durden both have great track records and have earned their confidence. I am just a little surprised with their loose lips.

Serious questions:

I've been hearing the "academic standard" excuse from the Ticks for years. Does anyone know what those requirements are for their athletes? What is JMU's requirements? How do these requirements compare to say Williams and Mary?

If a schools minimum GPA is say 3.5 for non athletes, is that requirement the same for athletes?
