As long as he doesn't head to the Arts school Richmond, it's fine.

(He probably will)

Apparently Rice blocked him from all CUSA schools, so coming home to ODU is evidently out of the question. Just hope he's smart enough to stay out of yellow and black.

Not a smart move for him; where's he going to go that's going to give him more exposure and actual playing time. He's a good player but he wouldn't start for Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, UNC. I wait and see where he will be transferring first

Where could he go to have more exposure than Rice? Is this a trick question?

To the ODU folks, do you guys have a long-time rivalry with VCU, or is there another reason you don't want him to join the Rams?

Correct. ODU and VCU are arch-rivals and we play each other every year. If the tables were turned you'd have a lot of VCU fans hoping Evans wouldn't go to ODU.

Rivalry. Im been openly critical of him because I think his scoring numbers make people believe he's a much better player than what he is (turnovers, efficiency, poor defense), but I would much rather him stay in conference and make the conference better because we all need it.

VCU seems like a lock, but they already have a good young point guard on the roster and an incoming top 100 guy. Interesting to see if they can figure out a way to make all 3 happy.

At one point in history, ODU v VCU was the best rivalry in the state. VCU held their end of the bargain while ODU had a drunk coach carry them to a 5 win season and we are still in recovery mode.

Fun fact: During that 5 win season, ODU defeated UVA. The more you know..

I was there at the Coliseum. Probably the only time in my life I openly rooted for ODU. Dimitri Batten was a monster in that one.

If Evans does go to VCU, he'd take Jonny Williams' spot on the roster, so it shouldn't be a big deal — unless the top 100 guy gets cold feet over sharing the backcourt with him in 2018-19.

RE: Bad news for Rice basketball
Disappointing day so far for Rice basketball, as our #3 scorer (Marcus Jackson) also announced that he is transferring. He's been at Rice 4 years and is graduating in May, so he will be immediate eligible without sitting out a year. He's a very good shooter.

I'll understand if Evans transfers to VCU. Rhoades said on numerous occasions that the first call he made after getting the job at Rice was to Evans (who he had been recruiting for years while associate head coach at VCU). Hard to fault Evans if he really has that strong of a bond with Rhoades and wants to return to his home state. That said, I think it is a terrible idea for such a good player to sit out a year in the middle of his college career. If he takes too big of a step in programs, he may just end up on the bench (like former Rice player Sean Obi at Duke). No telling when that type of program gets a few 5-star guys and buries you.

I also don't fault Jackson. He played at Rice 3 years (missed 2015-16 because of a knee injury) and is getting his degree. That's the point of going to Rice, so mission accomplished for him and best of luck moving forward.

What worries me is that there are rumors of more transfers to come. Rice went through mass defections ~5 years ago. One idea Rhoades sold really hard was that he was recruiting players that wanted to be at Rice and would stick at Rice. If half the team transfers when Rhoades leaves, it will leave a bitter taste in my mouth abouth is time at Rice. Time will tell on whether other guys follow Marcus & Marcus out the door.

If there are additional transfers, it really makes me wonder what the hell the players were cheering for when Pera was announced as Rice's new head coach. I took the roomful of jubilant players to mean they wanted to play for Pera ... not that they were happy for him personally but had no intention of ever sticking at Rice.

RE: Bad news for Rice basketball
Lets face it. This isn't shocking to anyone who paid attention to why Evans ended up at Rice. I was hoping that Rhodes was going to encourage him to stay at Rice and stick with his commitment. But lets also be real. That hardly ever happens, not in todays "Business of College Athletics".

RE: Bad news for Rice basketball
If Dylan Ennis can start for Oregon (and Villanova, although I'm not sure if he started both of his years at Villanova), Evans can start for about 99 pct of the country. Maybe not Kentucky, UNC or Duke, but he could start for any other ACC team besides the big two. Evans is not a point guard - that was painfully apparent. But with a quality point guard besides him, he can be a really good shooting guard in an upper level college basketball program. He's not big enough to play in the NBA at the 2 guard, but for the NCAA, he's fine. I'm not really sure why some people have been down on him the past two years. It's awfully tough to be both the point guard and shooting guard at the same time, but he's been the best guard I've seen at Rice in 30 years (I never saw Ricky Pierce play in college).

I see on twitter that 3/4 guys are leaving. What's the point of keeping your assistant if he can't keep the players. Might as well go after the right coach.
