Works both ways.
The current scandal surrounding President Donald Trump's tweeted accusations that his predecessor wiretapped Trump Tower is proof of what might be called the Salena Zito rule. Zito, of course, wrote the essay in the Atlantic how Trump's supporters took him "seriously, but not literally," whereas the press took him "literally, but not seriously."

nitpick trump's imprecision of language to your heart's content ...

"No matter what you heard if you like your doctor or healthcare plan you can keep it."
"if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your private health insurance plan, you can keep your plan, period."
etc, etc, etc.... 6 times in this video. 36 times in the video below.

You do realize that showing you the dictionary is not saying "depends what the definition"... It's more like saying this *IS* the definition, here look at the dictionary.

On Friday, Nunes didn't make anything better. In fact, with a series of elliptical statements, he suggested that on Wednesday he had gone off half-cocked—which is not SOP for an intelligence committee chairman in charge of a highly sensitive and politically charged investigation. Asked repeatedly about the information that was the basis for his charge that Trump and his associates were inappropriately "unmasked" in classified intelligence reports based on legally authorized top-secret surveillance of foreign targets, Nunes said he did not have that material in hand.
