"Conversations with sources around college sports this week revealed Wichita St upgrading its League--most likely to the American Athletic Conference--as a distinct possibility in the near future." Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated.

I'm going to venture to say that Thamel Has confirmed that Wichita St has talked to better leagues about membership. I'm not sold on the idea that anyone is ready to pull the trigger and take the shockers.

I know. But there has been a poster on here saying that The AAC is not interested. More specifically, Uconn would not want this to happen. Other posters are saying there are no talks between the AAC and Wichita St happening. They are talking. Wichita St wants out of the Missouri Valley and was reportedly turned down by the MWC a few months ago. Will the AAC take them in? I'm for it as long as they don't start FBS football.
Cheers!

So which is it:
- AAC is trying to upgrade bball to, at least in part, appeal to UConn
- UConn is against adding yet another team that it's fans don't know and won't buy tickets to see play
??

The articles keep sighting #1 (AAC adds Wichita to appeal to Uconn)

IMO, adding Wichita could be the last straw for UConn.
They bite the bullet and go Indy in football and join Big East in all sports.
That then prompts AAC to add Dayton and VCU.

Both. UConn won't be happy unless they are playing ACC or Big East teams. There will always be a reason to gripe about the American.

RE: Pete Thamel of SI saying Wichita St/AAC could happen in few months
If Wichita joined the American next season, the Shockers would leave behind 16 credits earned over the past six years. Five of those 16 credits were earned in the 2013 tournament. From the American's perspective, the last of the 2013 tournament credits from the Big East pay out in 2018, so it would make sense for Wichita State to join July 1, 2018 - depending on timing of the actual pay out and the MVC's conference bylaws, it may mean July 1, 2019.
Of course if Wichita State makes the Final Four next year, then it screws all this up.

More likely UConn is pushing the plan. The biggest danger for UConn is that their most important program (basketball) is damaged due to its league. I wouldn't be surprised if they are pushing the 3 team expansion (Wichita, Dayton, VCU). That would be a suitable alternative to the Big East. That places the AAC somewhere between the current A-10 and the Big East. Probably closer to the latter than the former.

Curious if Marshall bolts does the AAC still want WSU?

I would think so. Their investment in basketball (including how much they are willing to pay coaches) and the size of their fan base should keep them relevant post Marshall.

RE: Pete Thamel of SI saying Wichita St/AAC could happen in few months
Let's think for a bit how the American members might vote on expansion:
In UConn is pushing it they are a yes
If UConn is a yes so is Temple.
Tulsa could probably go for a regional rival so I'm going to say they are a yes.
SMU and Houston have had good basketball lately so perhaps they too would back a pro basketball move.
Cincy and Memphis are probably also going to be in favor of a basketball move that keeps the conference together. I'm not positive how Cincy feels about Dayton though.
I'm not sure how schools who don't emphasize basketball--would feel: Tulane, UCF, USF, ECU
To me if you are trying to build up American basketball to try and be on par with the Big East you are going to need Dayton and VCU too.

I agree, but the commissioner has stated that we won't be adding "multiple" non-football schools, so it looks like it will just be Wichita.

Without the other two this expansion accomplishes nothing.

If Wichita State is added, Gregg Marshall immediately becomes the highest paid coach in the American - even more so than Kevin Ollie, a national championship winning head coach.
The only way AAC schools vote down on their admission is if they have to give up guaranteed money in order to get them. This is where the network, ESPN, would have to come in.

I don't think you can call adding a fantastic basketball school 'nothing', but it definitely does less than adding 3 fantastic basketball programs.

I'm all for Dayton. Locally they're perceived as a big-time program on par with Xavier and Butler. The only thing holding them back is the national perception of being in a small-time conference.

If the goal is to establish the American as the clear top conference outside of the big 6 than you can't let Dayton and VCU stay in the Atlantic 10.
