Memphis wasn't the problem. Sure he never beat Memphis, but he was still on the bubble most years. The problem was his post season record. Never played Memphis in the conference tournament, so that is no excuse. Several years, had he won at least one or two conference games he was supposed to win, they would have gotten an at large bid, even with losses to Memphis.
The biggest problem with Davis though wasn't on the court. It was off the court. Academic issues, failure to sell the program to the community, trashing his bosses, and a lot of things that have been hinted at that could have gotten UAB in serious trouble with the NCAA.
I'm glad he is doing well where he is at. But this revisionist history of his time at UAB is seriously messed up.
Staying on the court here with this but Anderson had plenty of other opportunities for qualities wins (Charlotte, St. Louis, Cinci, Louisville) whereas as Davis had Memphis and UTEP? And it is likely that Davis would a have won a couple more conference titles had Memphis not been so much better than everyone else at that time.
My point is simply that Anderson-Davis comp isn't apples to apples and I actually think Davis is the better coach. The 2008 and 2009 UAB teams were real solid. Better than your teams the last few years IMHO.

definitely NOT apples to apples. IF youre only talking about X's and O's, you could make a strong argument that Davis was better than Anderson. However, there's much more to being a coach. When looking at the total job description of a college basketball head coach, Davis was awful while at UAB.

RE: The Daily Reveille (LSU) Opinion on next basketball coach...Mike Davis
It is obvious that Mike Davis is no Calipary, but he did try to convince the UAB Athletic Director to adopt a recruiting tactic that Calipary was known to be using at Memphis to great advantage. That is to grant a waiver added to the NOLI for Cousins and Bledsoe to allow them to move with Davis if he left UAB. The UAB AD refused and the two players went to play for Calipary who moved on to UKY with them in tow. Davis was asking his AD to do what his own AD during his college days told his school's boosters -- "meet the competition (in recruiting)".
The irony was that the same fans who were critical of Davis for even asking for the waiver were then angry that Davis stayed on the job a few years anyways. If we judge decisions by results of those decisions, where is Coach Cal today and where is Coach Davis and where is UAB's program? We can never know what might have happened if UAB had been able to sign Cousins and the players Davis thought would follow him to UAB. It could have changed UAB's perception in sports and - like Memphis - led to conference advancement. We can never know for sure.

The SWAC usually provides cannon fodder for top tier NCAA teams, often with large margin losses in 1 & 16 matchups. Some years, their champ has a negative W-L record going into NCAA tournament play. I recall Murry virtually winning the SWAC championship one season by going 10-0 - until he hit his own conference play.
The HBCUs have recruiting problems due to most or all of their formerly usual recruits now going by the dozens to state P5 and other FBS schools today. Recent publicity about the deterioration of facilities at Grambling State illustrates their difficulties in competition when you see LSU's new 100,000+ sq ft training facilities.

Really. I didn't know any of that. Thank you for providing information that no one knows.
As Clint Eastwood's character at the end in "High Plains Drifter" said "Yes you do".

to answer your question, i dont think JH is very good...and so far, RE has been awful (more awful than MD). but nothing in my post (or any of the referenced posts) even remotely had anything to do with either one of them...so im not sure how its relevant

I think he's saying his first year was awful, which is true. Whether he's an awful coach remains to be seen.

thats why i said "So far"--my total opinion is not even close to being formed.
i assume that MB meant my opinion was formed before the season started...if he was talking about me, he has zero basis for that
up until this point, i havent really been supportive of or very critical of RE
