RE: TROY vs Duke gameday thread
Troy deserves all the credit in the world for winning the conference tourney, even if it was "hot at the right time". They also deserve credit for achieving the conference record they did, albeit on the wrong side of an unbalanced conference schedule. They got all the top dogs twice, both Georgias, UTA, and Ark St. (Coastal was in the same boat. I'd be the first CCU fan my own would point to as being the most disappointed in our inaugural season, but I will at least pay heed to the fact we had a tough row to hoe.)
There were some who fared better in the regular season, and were patting themselves on the back despite getting the top dogs only once each. It wasn't a surprise when they didn't fare well in that late stretch of games vs better teams, nor when they went out of the tourney early.
So I'm not gonna bash Troy at all. They earned it. Does it mean I thought they were the best team to represent us? No. Still think overall, on any given day, with the resume they had, UTA was our best chance. But the way it works is tourney winner goes. That's why I agree, and have stated previously, that you gotta set up your conference tourney to more heavily favor your top team, whether via home games, or multiple byes. A lower conference needs its best rep.
Troy played admirably, yes, but it was Duke, and they deserved a "Duke". If UTA wins and goes, they don't get a "Duke". That's what we need for the Sun Belt, winnable games, not a "Duke". It's worked for us before, and UTA could been in Rhode Islands shoes and beat a Creighton. Heck, Troy might beat them too with how well they were playing... but Troy, or any non-conference 3,4,5, or 6 Sun Belt seed would never get that chance.
