Why would we want a coach to stick around for a while? That mean's nobody wants him.
Blakeney had offers to leave and turned them down... he worked out very well till the final 5 years of his 24 years with us.
But boy those last 5 years were rough...

Yes but the first 19 were very good. But those years are no longer the case and recovered 2 years later.

RE: Grant McCasland to North Teas
Blakeney was a special case.
First he had been up in the upper echelon and while maybe didn't have totally clean hands, he was also likely picked to be the guy to take the fall for others.
Second, there were schools who weren't going to touch after that so the schools who did approach may not have been schools he ever wanted to go to.
Third, Troy took an interesting path that had to be professionally challenging and interesting. Not many people get to lead a program from one classification to another TWICE at the same school.
If Troy had stayed Division II or FCS, who knows if he would have had the same thinking.
Guys like Blakeney are more unicorn than horse, it happens but in general coaches are like milk, they have a short shelf life at a school.
Never hire a guy planning to keep him two decades. If it works out and he's successful, that's wonderful, but if that's your goal then you need the guy who isn't good enough to advance but too good fire as a general rule.

Scott Cross played at UTA, was an assistant and has been the head man for 11 years. Not terribly concerned that he has been here this long, but I also recognize why that isn't terribly replicable elsewhere.

It isn't a joke. But it is a horrible ridiculous idea though.

It blows my mind the names some people throw out for this job.

Lavelle Moton, from North Carolina Central, would be a good get. Rumored to be a candidate.

He was rumored to be the runner up to McCasland last year, and is coming off an NCAA trip...I can see the attraction.

Reoccurring themes of A-State coaching searches.
-"We're use to this, so we got this!"
-Mohajir says there's no shortage of interest.
-Some (very wrong) fans want to hire the best local HS coach.
-"Hey, what about (former A-State coach)?"

Moton would be an excellent get. I've always felt he was destined for better than stAte (nothing against you guys) but perhaps he needs a midway point between MEAC ball and P5 ball.

Switch out the 4th thing for either (Former Razorback player/coach) or (Brother of former AState Coach) and you've got this one down.
Some idiot keeps calling into local radio to suggest Dennis Nutt, John Pephrey, and Todd Day, none of whom are anywhere near Mohajir's shortlist.

My first year at TXST was Dennis Nutt's last. It was one of the more embarrassing displays of D1 basketball I had ever seen and have ever seen since.

As one can imagine, we've got some people here who purport to be AState fans, but really worship the almighty hog first. Those guys are terrible about "Well, AState really needs to hire someone who will stay Long term, so they should hire an Arkansas guy"
The reality is that AState has no issues whatsoever replacing coaches every couple years, as long as we are winning games. We are also acutely aware that it is really hard to fire a local guy if he sucks without fan backlash, so we'll hire a guy with no ties to Arkansas, who may or may not have ever stepped foot in the state before prior to the interview.

Watching/listening to North Texas basketball the past five years I feel your pain.

Funny thing about Dennis. He was a great assistant when working for his brother Dickie at AState. Dickie wasn't a great coach at all but the years Dennis worked for him were the last good years of AState hoops. Tied for the league regular season one year, won the tournament after finishing second another year.
Of course there was another Nutt coaching as well. Their dad was an Arkansas high school coaching legend at Arkansas School for the Deaf. (The Leopards, yes the Deaf Leopards)
During games you could occasionally see their dad signing to them from the stands.
Dennis left and things went down the crapper.

The guy who coached our first 24 games this year is really good, you'll love him and just hope the guy who coached the last eight games doesn't show up.
