Yep
These high schoolers get way too much pub at an early age anyway. Plus Penny might have a golf tournament that week.
Sure. The five star and the four star guys are going to get the pub anyway. But what about the zero star guys whose basketball career ends as soon as they play their last high school game? The bench warmers? The student managers? This would be a great experience for them, one that they will remember their whole lives.
But, of course, we have bylaws. And we have those stars who get enough pub as it is. Who cares about the scrubs.
They don't need to be on national tv to get pub
It's more about the educational experience of going to NYC.
Chance of a lifetime for some of those kids.

And, btw, apparently there are quite a few states with same bylaws that made exceptions for their team to play.
Not doing so, is extremely unreasonable.

Some and probably most of those kids have probably never been out of Memphis. NYC is an experience that they would never forget. l remember being overjoyed to go to Nashville for our state track championship, staying at a motel for the first time, swimming in the motel pool, etc. etc. I also remember my first trip to NYC as an adult and it was inspiring just to be on 5th Ave, seeing the skyscrapers, Radio City Music Hall, etc. etc.
Yes the TSSAA has cheated these kids out of something they worked hard for and deserved. If I were rich I think I would send them all for a long week-end just so they could have the experience of NYC even without the basketball experience.

Same rule applies to Murfreesboro Riverdale girls team. They were also invited, although I think they had no interest in going to NYC.

If it were Brentwood Academy or Montgomery Bell Academy with this opportunity, then it wouldn't be in question.

That's a pretty strong accusation on his part. I have no clue if the decision would have been different if it was a different school, but if you are a public figure like Calkins, you better have something to substantiate that claim before you come out on the radio and speculate. Seems reckless.

From the TSSAA bylaws, Article IV - Section 9
Section 9. The sports season for a school shall end when the team has been eliminated from the TSSAA
tournament series or has won the state championship. The sports season shall end for a school whose team does
not enter the tournament series with the playing of the last regularly scheduled game.

The case could easily be made that NYC is more iconic than either Hawaii or Paris. I don't know why the TSSAA denied the request to participate, but I do agree with others that it would have been the chance of a lifetime for at least some of those kids.

From what I can tell from Twitter and others comments, the only reason given is because participation is against the bylaws. Someone tweeted that the appeals committee went into "executive session" for the decision/vote, so nothing was said in public. I think another reason why people are upset is that there was no explanation and/or pretense at consideration of the appeal.
